Not sure if anyone noticed this but from what ive gathered with the mark 3, you shoot with the left trigger which leaves the yellow sort of nukey thng and then shoot it with the ray gun which makes it actually effective. Unpack a punched it turned it purple, syndicate noticed when he thought it had different effects but it was just because he shot the yellow nukey thing.
