If felt so depressing the first time (maybe just the earlier versions, but I remeber everything being brown, gray and cloudy), limited weapons and vehicles, that weight on the characters all the newer Rockstar games have and no countryside, even if San Andreas looked worse, it still has probablu the best map in the series (replayed it last week, loved it). Not to mention that the PC port was horrible took me years to get a PC strong enough to play it properly. And it still has a lot of weirdness when it comes to graphics. But credit where it's due, it's an excellent game. Took me 4 playthrough and many years to appreciate it but now it's my favorite next to San Andreas. Compared to this, GTA V was the best thing ever on my first playthrough, absolute perfection. But nothing to do after that, and couldn't get through my 2nd playthrough no matter how I tired.
The thing I hate most wasn't mentioned at all: the spam calls. Like, let me go to bed, Roman, it's three in the freaking morning, and I don't wanna go to Cluckin' Bell! 😤 That's what makes this game unplayable for me. It's literally constant, and if you refuse, it affects friendships. One time I called Dwayne, and he was mad at me for ignoring him, I kid you not. He was upset I took the friendship for granted, and refused to hang out with me. And oddly, Michelle did the same once. I went ahead and killed the run. Don't know if my disc is bugging out because it's so old, but the game needs a whole remake. I'm thinking that because the story is perfect as it is, they should just leave that alone and redo the game, add the lines by having actors lip sync them, and there you have it. As if this isn't an essay already, I have to address what was mentioned. The filter: I hated the gray, dreary filter when I was younger, but I love it now. Colors are greatly affected, yes, such as when it's actually sunny, certain hues look weird, like the mustard sports coat from Perseus. It looks creamy instead of mustard. I think it does reflect Niko's outlook and the game's tone, because notice how this filter is also used in crime dramas and dramas in general. Lighting is very important to the tone of the film, show, game, etc. Comedies usually have bright lighting due to the upbeat tone. I'm a huge fan of noir, but I fear everything that makes art great will die because audiences love certain tones now. Driving physics: I loved them for the most part. It's just something you have to grin and bear. What I do hate is that powerboats handle like a freaking tank. And the APC was so tricky for me to drive. Even with my finger dead on the accelerate button, its acceleration was still lousy. Mission structure: I loved it for the most part. The middle of the game does get repetitive, especially when it comes to Ray's and Francis' missions. I hate both of their mission strands, except the iconic museum deal. Francis just has us do evil crap to save his own ass. He's deluded and thinks it's right just because he's a cop. Activities: I mostly disagree, because the activities are top-notch. A bunch of immersion has been added to GTA IV, and although it needs some of what San Andreas offered, can you imagine different hairstyles being available for Niko? Him with long hair would be terrifying. Vehicles: They obviously didn't make planes drivable because they know their player base loves edgy humor and ways to entertain themselves, and that someone would've definitely used a plane for malicious purposes. So them not allowing planes to be flown saved them a huge controversy, as the game unfortunately already had enough complaints. What's aggravating is that they've added all sorts of '80s, '90s, and 2000s vehicles to GTA Online. The Asterope GZ is one of my favorite Camry models in real life, and it and every other older vehicle in GTA Online needs to be in a remake to add that variety. Bicycles as well, because they're mentioned to exist on Radio Broker, and the fact you don't see hipster NPCs, and NPCs in general, riding them kills the immersion. Map: Needs a more accurate NYC depiction. Many say it is accurate except for everything being clumped together, but boroughs are missing, a Rikers Island is missing, and they wanted a countryside originally. This is why a remake is needed. In conclusion, this game is an imperfect work of art. I loved the realism, while GTA V felt very exaggerated in some of its gameplay. You can't eat in GTA V, friend activities are very limited, and the hand-to-hand combat is downgraded in terms of how weak NPCs are and the fighting moves. Wow... I don't blame anyone for not wanting to read this. This kind of review is best in video form. Maybe I'll remember it and do so if I ever make videos.
@@learninghowtolivetakesawholeli Lol thanks! I'm in a love-hate relationship with this game. Been wanting to see if new copies exist, because mine just feels very buggy likely due to age, but I also wanna wait and see if it's rereleased with bug fixes. Graphics are still ok, but I don't trust them with a remaster even if they learned their lesson from the trilogy. It'd be my kind of luck finding a new copy worth a lot and then they release a great remaster. Now that I remember, I actually did find a brand new copy online, but they were asking more for it than Rockstar would charge for a remaster, which is just insane.
@@Itsbrainz I feel like banging my head against a wall... I always zoomed right past that feature without even trying it out! 😤 But I guess I learned something new. Thanks! They didn't add planes because the map was so small that the developers didn't think it was necessary, You could fly commercial jets in SA and it was released in 2004
The number one thing I hate about Grand theft auto 4 is it fanboys. GTA4 fanboys are so Arrogant and nostalgic driven that they forget the games shortcomings and yet try to justify GTA4 supremacy.
Guess we can consider GTA IV as a laboratory,Rockstar has just launched a game in a new engine, with new resources and possibilities that maybe couldn't be totally explored using 2008s hardwares. Plus, it served as a good market research, not only to let them know what players did enjoy and what they didn't,but because it was cheaper and easier to produce as the game's city is the same as the company's headquarters. I do love this game,it has an unique personality, story and atmosphere.
I love the driving physics. That is one of the few games that will let you do a rolling burn out while break standing. And if you used to driving bigger cars, you will kind of understand why you have to slow down for certain turns, every other GTA cars drive like toy cars
The fact that when i bought gta 4 for the first time and started to play by looking at the graphics i literally vomited. I played for only an hour or so i got sick with the graphics for no reason
I 100% agree with this list. GTA 4 took multiple steps forward and multiple steps back. They modernized the game and physics, but they took out a bunch of features. I did and still do love gta online racing and that started in gta 4. The main feature that was added in gta 4 that I dont like is flying through the windshield when you wrecked. Gta 4 is still a great game though.
I personally like the driving physics in this game and even though the map was smaller than gta sa it was still more lively city to roam around this game is still in my heart❤
@@ASHsorI ain't a fanboy, but I kinda like it too. It ain't realistic, especially with the excessive suspension, and it ain't objectively better than GTA 5 like the fanboys like to say, but I find it really engaging and challenging trying to keep control of the car. It's pretty fun imo, especially during police chases.
I think one of the reasons why people prefer GTA San Andreas was that it was more colourful and vibrant and to go along with that it had more types of places to explore whether it could be the city, the forest, the desert etc which as a result made it more interesting to explore while GTA 4 was just a city so I could see why people preferred the previous one more than GTA 4.
Absolutely not. It needs a remake instead, because they'll ruin a remaster. At the very least, it needs a rerelease with its issues all patched, including the spam calls.
Another thing bad about it, is having to unlock the islands after completing missions, the game is on next generation, more games is allowing people to freely roam maps from the start, thank goodness the DLCs alows them to free roam the map from the start, that would be the basis for Los Santos in GTA 5
"Some" lmao, most people hate gta 4. The only goid thing about this game was the story and tbogt dlc. This game was such a disappointment after gta san andreas.
All of this...and I couldn't get past Niko sounding like Borat. I quit after spending 15 minutes of my real life playing virtual bowling with Niko's date. I returned for the Lost & Damned and loved it.
For the driving aspect I would say the cause of the division of opinions being split 50/50 is 50% of players don't understand driving physics therefore aren't natural drivers and the other half is simply the opposite.
The other things people complained about with gta 4 was that it didn't have the RPG mechanics like san andreas did and the map was small compared to san andreas
For me, my favourite is the driving physics. I just wish it is available in GTA V so I can enjoy it. Only played a tiny bit of GTA IV and never played GTA V. The lack of GTA IV's physics is really disappointing, but I'll certainly play GTA V some day.
What are those "most important mechanics" as GTA IV is mechanically the strongest game in the series. GTA V ditched pretty much all advancements in that area, severely downgrading them and or making them plain bad.
I'll squash the argument by saying a perfect video game in general will be a mix of RDR2, Saints Row 2, Watch Dogs, San Andreas, and GTA IV. RDR2's features are what blew all the other open world games out of the water. It alone makes a nigh-perfect game. It brought back cabaret and shows in general, which I loved in GTA IV.
@@BDozer666 Large open world, beautiful atmosphere like other GTAs, cinematic missions like GTA San Andreas and 5, diverse map like GTA San Andreas and 5, more in-game activities like haircuts, saloons, tennis, betting, planes, swimming schools, vehicle customization, weapon customization, more clothing opinions for players to spend money on, garages, more properties to buy .... The list goes on an on

GTA IV isn't bad. It's the fanboys who are commenting on every video related to GTA "GTA IV is better than GTA V" Like bro, stfu, both are good in their own ways.
it's ironic how they constantly preach about how V is a downgrade to the older games yet they're the ones constantly mentioning V and comparing it to different games
Well to be fair it seems like about every GTA game improves things and takes a step back in a few other things for some reason which I guess makes it subjective. Aside from graphics San Andreas could be considered the best one.
Here is the sad part: GTA IV isn’t the only GTA game with a bunch of fanboys, GTA games such as: GTA V, GTA Vice City, GTA San Andreas, GTA Online, all have fanboys, sad to say that it’s a cycle now.
Gray theme is a unique experience for me but yeah sometimes I too get annoyed so I play ballad of gay tony which is colorful and looks less depressing.
I feel that GTA IV was where Rockstar was experimenting with the new game engine, and then took what they learned from it, and applied it to GTA V, which is by far a superior game to GTA IV.
Nah, it was more so GTA 5, even though a bunch of important stuff in GTA 4 were missing, stuff such as no restaurants, not being able to get food from stands, lack of locations, the map being mostly just nature or sand towns in GTA V just made it have less passion and made it to where it isn’t as fun, especially after the missions.
bro whattt it's so fun, it's the only gta that ain't retarded but realistic with a background story of the character and missions in which you discover more about Niko. this game is so good.
I'm one of the haters, i actually only completed it twice. I completed SA at least 10 times and GTA 5 about 5 times. In GTA 4 controls/physics of running and driving are extremely overrated and i personally think it's horrific. The story is depressing, opportunities/possibilities within the game are depressing and the whole enviroment is depressing. I only played gta 2 a few times and didn't really get too much into the story of 3 and vice city but compared to San Andreas and Gta 5, i think gta 4 is by far the worst game.
@dtxspeaks268 The storyline is alright but it would have been nice to see Nico become a bit more succesfull or take over Liberty City like CJ did with Los Santos.
The game certainly has its ups and downs, just like any other GTA game. i'd say it has a unique color palette, which makes the game very good looking in some aspects. Incredible story, physics and car damage, but it unfortunately falls short on alot of things, so saying that its the best GTA game is out of the question. Its a good game, yes, but the thing that made the previous GTA games special, which, in my opinion, was is light hearted, comedic style of handling situations, and how funny its characters were, doesnt seem present in GTA IV, not for the most part.
I can get over all those disadvantages. Except no checkpoints, i still laugh at my outbursts having to restart pesky missions 🤣 I recommend GTA 4 to everyone ❤
You know what really bored me to death in GTA 5? Melee combat. Jesus Christ the melee fighting in GTA 5 is horrible. Yes i love the fact they've included so many melee weapons. But it's all for nothing because of how garbage the fighting is. Also, it's completely overshadowed by the amount of gun's. Also, i hate desert themes. But can understand the need for variety. I never owned 4. But i definitely do appreciate the fighting mechanics and the city landscape. I also dislike Los Angeles. I've played way more games involving L.A. then NYC. And i can easily say i much prefer the NYC landscape over the boring, dry looking, oversaturated look of Los Angeles. I'm so tired of L.A., and i haven't even been there in real life, i'm so sick of seeing it in video games. But that's just my own personal opinion and matter of preferences.
I like gta iv,and I can say that I don't hate other games (gta v more exactly),because I don't even play them ,I hope everyone has a nice day (or night)! :)
God, the stupidest shit people have to bitch and complain about lol I can bitch about San Andreas but I still love it. Same with GTAV, it's a hunk of dog shit but I still enjoy it
my reason for not likeing gta4, the camera when driving, it is way too slow to start moving behind the car after a turn leading to many blind corners unless you manually turn the camera yourself at or ahead of the turn. for a game about driving a lot, having the driving feel horrible thanks to the camera is such a letdown.
It was a missed opportunity to not to do buffalo and niagara falls maybe you smuggle stuff into canada i liked jersey but most didnt i would have done carcer city which is philadelphia as well. maybe start in liberty combine the bronx and brooklyn go to north NY then carcer city and end the story on staunton island the manhattan of the game. There was a forest area completely cut out of the game maybe a tease of what could have been.
That wouldn't make sense to have Buffalo and Niagara when Liberty City is NYC and Northern New Jersey. If anything, it'd make sense to have the countryside be based on Rockland, Putnam, Orange and Dutchess counties and have a small city based on White Plains, another small city based on the lower Westchester cities of Yonkers, Mt Vernon and New Rochelle right above Bohan, and a big city based on both Stamford and Bridgeport in CT.
gta 4 is good but the thing is when i say gta 4 is better the problem is gta san andreas fan boys sometimes get angry to when you love gta 4 but listen I love gta sa and gta 5
I will admit I was actually a bit shocked at how many missions, even only a few of them, actually require a cop car, which is a way to introduce us to the side mission for Niko to make some extra money. However, I will admit one thing I was surprised at was that while GTA 4 does contain the vigilante side mission, that’s sadly not the case for “The Lost and Damned” or “The Ballad of Gay Tony”.
What ppl don't understand is... many things. Like respecting others' opinions... I have played almost all gta games for a significant amount of time, and gta v and iv for 10 and 7 years. Those who say gta sa got more stuff and shi I wanna tell them that gta iv was first ever game with significantly good graphics and requirements, and rockstar had to make it that way... Simple but serious. Trust me, both the sides who fight for which game is better, are just those kids (I am 29, so maybe I can call them kid) who have either not played them for that much amount of time, or they have just seen vids of them before judging. They don't even have proper facts to argue with, and I feel they are no less than thos 8 yo ipad kids
To be honest.. until now people still play gta san andreas even if playing old vision of it. You not getting boring because lots of variety even if not having the mods
I love that grey theme, because it fits the story. Whole GTA IV is more mature than other ones. It has a darker story line, more difficult driving physics and it's more difficult in missions. I don't know why people hate it. It's just a darker, more mature version of the GTA franchise. I think it was made with the older players in mind, who've been there since GTA 1 and they were kids/teenagers back then. GTA V is colorful and arcade and fits more for the 2013 kids/teenagers. Older gamers, like myself, appreciate GTA IV for its climate.
Apparently, because GTA was originally created, as a games, for entertainment and fun mayhem, and most players were simply bored / inappropriate to watch the main character suddenly start to rant about what kind of s**t he does in life, and how he is fed up with it all. The same can be said about VCS. You could say that TBOGT was the GTA 4 that everyone wanted. They even added a tank and a parachute, lol. And in essence, it all looked like Vice City reincarnated in Liberty (they even added a radio station of the same name there, heh).
Another reason why I never bought and never played (and never gonna play) GTA 4 is the xenophobic approach or even despising foreigners, especially those from Central or Eastern Europe. Making fun or blaming them for a murder that they had nothing to do with is something I cannot stand.
I am not a big fans of open world game I play all of the GTA games that after GTA VC, except GTA online (i don't like online game), but all of them i just go straight with story/missions, ignore the open world; after i finish the story, i will never play it again; thats also why i don't like VCS, it force you to play on the open world. But GTA4, the story is awesome, the driving is so fun, and the Ragdoll physics is so good. that's why i already play it at least 6 round, and buy two copies on both PC and PS3
The only thing i didnt like was the endings, in one we choose to work with dmitri which is completely illogical And in the other one the fact that patrick mcreary didnt come to avenge his sister just ruined the whole thing, yes niko is the main character but patrick deserved to avenge
I love IV, and the lack of map diversity is wrong. Yes, it's all an urban environment, but if you look at the humongous map of V and how poorly that's been utilized, it's not a problem, because all 4 islands have a distinct feel to it. And that urban environment is also gray, so you get that. That's also why you don't have airplanes; the map is too dense (not small) to get airplanes. A helicopter is fast enough. The driving is good, because there's a distinct feel between the European and Asian cars and the American land boats wobbling about. But you have to get that difference. So the lack of diversity of vehicles isn't true, unless you only take yank tanks. And the lack of checkpoints? Nor III, nor VC, nor SA had it too, so.... The only thing I give you is the shit port it was in the beginning, but since updating games has become common, every pc port of every game has been iffy at best at launch.
I played gta 3, vice city, san andreas during their release, and also gta v. Yet somehow i skip this game gta 4. Well after watching this video. I think i don't regret it
I'm suprised that Windows Live isn't on the list. Probably the worst thing about the game. But yeah I have to agree with most things on the list. I love GTA4 and its extensions,, but it is definetly not a flawless game like people love to portray it.
Despite being a huge graphical and technical upgrade my main issue is that there is far less variety in GTA 4 than GTA SA. This applies to both the map, features and missions. I know everyone says this, but the best part is the driving physics.
Idk why everyone hating on the gray theme I think its unique

They didn't add planes because the map was so small that the developers didn't think it was necessary, You could fly commercial jets in SA and it was released in 2004

Plus, it served as a good market research, not only to let them know what players did enjoy and what they didn't,but because it was cheaper and easier to produce as the game's city is the same as the company's headquarters.
I do love this game,it has an unique personality, story and atmosphere.
And the glitch in the final mission of GTA IV, I broke space button of my keyboard 😢
I love the driving physics. That is one of the few games that will let you do a rolling burn out while break standing. And if you used to driving bigger cars, you will kind of understand why you have to slow down for certain turns, every other GTA cars drive like toy cars
The map is actually pretty different, each area is unique and recognizable + the grey theme goes with the setting. :)
The fact that when i bought gta 4 for the first time and started to play by looking at the graphics i literally vomited. I played for only an hour or so i got sick with the graphics for no reason
Yours is a special case.😅

I 100% agree with this list. GTA 4 took multiple steps forward and multiple steps back. They modernized the game and physics, but they took out a bunch of features. I did and still do love gta online racing and that started in gta 4. The main feature that was added in gta 4 that I dont like is flying through the windshield when you wrecked. Gta 4 is still a great game though.

I always hated how it looked and never knew there was a term for it. Too much grey to describe this game is spot on
I think one of the reasons why people prefer GTA San Andreas was that it was more colourful and vibrant and to go along with that it had more types of places to explore whether it could be the city, the forest, the desert etc which as a result made it more interesting to explore while GTA 4 was just a city so I could see why people preferred the previous one more than GTA 4.

Same, I had never played GTA 5 until 2 years ago.
That's the worst part about 4
The only thing i hate from gta iv is the fanboys
I don't mind the driving in GTA4 for cars, but for motorbikes, they are a pain in the ass!
I agree with you. But they made it much better in "The Lost and Damned" so it was big fun to ride motorbikes in that DLC
So many try to be edgy by saying 4 is the best yet it fails with the most important mechanics.
idk why a lot of people say this game is immersive and detailed because I remember feeling this game was so empty and dead when I played it as a kid

@@Wertyber There nitpicking GTA5 not only just for Clickbait but to also sabotage the games praise.
This is the first GTA that started to feel drawn out and boring to play
No I loved it it was so fun
GTA 4's story is one of the best, but all of your other points are valid
@dtxspeaks268 The storyline is alright but it would have been nice to see Nico become a bit more succesfull or take over Liberty City like CJ did with Los Santos.
i just want to install gta 4 and stumble into this... is it really worth to try 😅
Same ay, although I think the guns in 5 are complete dogshit as well

The best way i could describe GTA 4 is that it has lost its Gtaness. Its like playing Mafia or watchdogs.
my reason for not likeing gta4, the camera when driving, it is way too slow to start moving behind the car after a turn leading to many blind corners unless you manually turn the camera yourself at or ahead of the turn. for a game about driving a lot, having the driving feel horrible thanks to the camera is such a letdown.
When I play gta 4 I feel like Niko is colorblind
And don’t get me started on the final mission I had to repeat it from the beginning like so many times especially because of the helicopter
It’s literally based around New York City which has no forest and if you want there everything looks gray
I like the gray tone
gta 4 is good but the thing is when i say gta 4 is better the problem is gta san andreas fan boys sometimes get angry to when you love gta 4 but listen I love gta sa and gta 5
For me , driving in GTA 4 first time felt stressing but later on , you know 🤣💀👑🥰
I agree I hate gta 4 let niko know gta 4 is boring
GTA 5 boring you must be a GTA 5 fanboy you must be your fan of Michael Trevor Franklin
I am not a big fans of open world game
I play all of the GTA games that after GTA VC, except GTA online (i don't like online game), but all of them i just go straight with story/missions, ignore the open world; after i finish the story, i will never play it again; thats also why i don't like VCS, it force you to play on the open world.
But GTA4, the story is awesome, the driving is so fun, and the Ragdoll physics is so good. that's why i already play it at least 6 round, and buy two copies on both PC and PS3
The only thing i didnt like was the endings, in one we choose to work with dmitri which is completely illogical
And in the other one the fact that patrick mcreary didnt come to avenge his sister just ruined the whole thing, yes niko is the main character but patrick deserved to avenge
I'd be ok if they were developing GTA San Andreas Stories to release after GTA 6
