When Herbie's on the screen, there's a billboard behind him advertising a dance at the Zenda Ballroom. The Zenda was at 936 W. 7th Street, downtown Los Angeles. It was across the street from the Statler Hilton, near Figueroa.
I showed this to his son, who barely knew his father before his untimely death. He's seen a couple other video snippets of Herb in some other orchestra shots, but this shows a much more personal side. I can't figure out what he says until the end, when he says, "...and to sing my praises", with tongue firmly planted in cheek. Stay tuned to this channel. I have a couple more offbeat clips coming. One, of a very young Al Klink and his wife.
The subjects, Herb and Joe, both shot this, taking turns with the camera. It was shot silent. In a sentimental attempt to bring life to these great musicians again, faux sound was added. But one mystery remains, and I, for one, would love to know exactly what Herb was saying. I leave it up to RUclips viewers to suggest something, because after running this back and forth about 50 times, I can't make out what he says at the beginning. But I think I know the last line. Let the mystery unfold.
Many thanks...I don't think I've ever seen any film of Herbie Haymer, who made so many great records with Norvo and whom we lost so young.
So glad I found your channel...RUclips "recommended" it to me, and they were right!

Very rare!!! It's like vlogging even before digital cameras. Amazing!
Sweet treat to see such a great player walking around back then!
