Great video! I just started fishing an older 400A and love it. I never thought about the amount of line retrieved vs. the gear ratio and the speed that the retrieve changes. I'm looking into a 300TE to fill that gap of my Calcuttas and hopefully have all the bases covered. Thanks for posting!!!
Its the same for deep jigging in the ocean. the rate of retrieve (ror) is more importantant than the reels ratio gearing. common sw jigging reels will do 30+ inches per rotation. Good to see this applied across the spectrum into bass fishing. Good stuff!!
I have had my old silver Calcutta 100 for over 15 years. Fished saltwater and freshwater bass with it. It's beat to hell but still works like new. Calcuttas are awesome reels. I have been using the revo toro 60 hs for my swimbaits and they can cast a mile and also have the wider spool like the Calcutta 400, but without that round reel appearance. They are a bit cheaper as well. If that helps anyone.
Thanks, I learned something. I haven't thrown many big baits, but am looking at going to Great Slave Lake for big pike this fall. I have a 400 that I've been using as well as a 300EJ, but thought the faster gear ratio made up the difference. I'll pay more attention to this now!
Great video! I came across this as I was researching a Calcutta TE 400 for sale. Would using thinner braid minimize the differences in length of line retrieved at the different ends of the cast? Sounds like (for bass fishing) braid and fluoro leader is the way to go...
The problem with going thinner with braid is the breaking factor. If you are throwing a heavier bait and you have less than 50# (12lb diameter) and you start just a little backlash and it will snap like a thread. I would do no less the 50# braid and a top shot of min. 25#mono or floruo
@@thebbztv thanks for the advice! I've heard something similar regarding fishing yellow tail on straight braid breaking off. Recommendation of a mono topshot or straight mono to absorb shock. thanks!
Sweet, Thanks! I was worried that the lower gear ratio would be too slow for the big baits. I normally fish finesse type baits or t-rig worms for bass. So, that being said I'm hoping to start throwing the big baits (like featured in this video) and aim for larger quality bass. Any way you can shed some light (or point me in the direction) to some baits to try out, be it plastic or hard swimbaits. Thanks again!! -Gio
FishandHook San Diego I am all about how to fish more than what to fish. That being said, everything works, everything.....some things work better than others. Check out theBBZ.com and take a look at some of the videos and articles and just think about the techniques, when you find something that is in your wheelhouse, then that is where you start to look at the right lures/tools to start to buy and use. A started boot tail swimbait can catch fish year around :)
Will do! I'll make sure to figure out how to work the fish around my area. When in doubt, ask the locals. I've been fishing the bay and kelp beds but haven't steered to much into freshwater fishing. I'll check out more of your vids and WILL subscribe. Great channel by the way!! Love the vids! Thanks for providing us with some great insight!!! -FishandHook
So I ordered a shimano 12 401f , it's supposedly a upgrade to the TE but I read somewhere they don't have breaks ? Please let me know if you know I've been going crazy trying to find out
And the reel also comes left handed--I like that cause it puts the crank on the same side as a spinning rod that is right handed. So with both, I pull with my right arm, crank with my left. Next, this reel (401TE) is great offshore for yellowtail and small to medium tuna, smooth as silk drag--and when you compare it to an Avet--that Avet is great but does not have the line winder, so you see people with their thumb up there "thumbing" the line while fighting a fish--not smart as I see it.
this was the video i was looking for to help me thank you ! now are you using all the brakes in the reel ?? ive had mixed opinion on taking one or two out or just keeping them all in. im wanting use this set up for only swimbaits only an have another rod for top water . thank you
I prefer the Calcutta for the better gears and bearings. This reel will just last longer with less problems. the lower end reels are fine with smaller lures, but with the big baits and all of the weight and energy they have you are better off with a higher end reel. Hope this helps
***** Calcutta 400 are the higher end reels I use the Conquest even higher. I thought it said Corvalus/Cardiff, my bad on reading it to fast. Those are the lower end reels. 400 Conquest is bullet proof!
I have a question, on you other videos you mentioned that diawa lexa 300 hd is the best reel for big baits , is the diawa better than the Calcutta te or are they both excellent reels for that type of baits
I have been testing reels the last few years and both are excellent choices. I am liking the Dawia 300 and 400 with the 8.1 a little more but you would never go wrong with a Shimano either.
thanks for the info, I'm currently using lews superduty for big swim baits and I love it but I'm also looking at the diawa lexa 300hd and the 400hd for both fresh and salt water but after your videos imma give the diawa lexa a try also thanks again.
you convinced me to return the 200D and go for 400D. do you think it is worth $50 for the upgrade? i love buying in retail since you can exchange and no hassle
+thebbztv i ended up exchanging with 300EJ. i was dissapointed on the spool shaft being do thin even the 400D! 300Ej has chunky spool shaft and drag star is metal compare to calcutta D's plastic
You are never to old to learn something 💪💪💪 , you referred to the G spot in fishing !!! Makes all the difference.
He's spot on, it's not the color, style or even action so much... speed and depth control are the keys to proper lure presentation.
Thanks for watching!
old video but thank you great information given. I have a 400 never realized how fast it really came in just new that I had to real it in slowly
This info is timeless. Glade it helped

Thanks for watching Ron
I love my 400A I scored mine for 80$ I toss heavy swimbaits and also soak some bait when fishing for Cats.
you broke it down so perfectly. makes a lot of sense. good stuff
Thanks Mark

Awesome job Bill.
Great tips and thanks for sharing your knowledge

I just purchased an older 400A would I still be able to throw the big baits? I enjoyed your video, thanks for sharing.
You are good to go buddy! :)

yeah might have to return this one. great grea video.
Nice, I got the 400
👍🏼

how about the calcutta D?
They are fine. Each real is different depending on line size. do your home work with what you have at you will be at the top of your class. :)
thebbztv what brand of line do you use?
Adam Her maxima 25# mono. ultrgreen
CALCUTTA 400S/400TE NO PROBLES 20+YRS POPPIN👍
Good stuff bill
What line should I use on a 201 TE throwing 1/2 oz 3/4 oz and 1 oz swimbaits.
With Swimbaits and that set up I would use nothing lighter than 12 to 15 mono. Minimum 50 pound braid
OK thank you.
Nice stuff bill! How did u get your hands on a calcutta te I can't find them
I have an older Shimano.ie is the part on how long they will last. The new Shimano that you should look at is the 400D. Thanks for watching
Look on ebay for the te.
lol for a second I thought it said "WIN A Shimano 400 TE"
this was the video i was looking for to help me thank you ! now are you using all the brakes in the reel ?? ive had mixed opinion on taking one or two out or just keeping them all in. im wanting use this set up for only swimbaits only an have another rod for top water . thank you
Hey buddy, when I have used baits this big I have never messed with the break system. The lures weighs so much it never really matters.
I just bought the shimano cardiff 300A. I bought it for big swimbaits. is it good for big bait?
Should work just fine ;)
Thanks. You are the reason for my bbz rat collection. Keep the great informative videos. Tight lines.
Mono is crap, braided is where its at. Also, braided doesnt stretch when you set the hook like mono does.
Great video by the way!
when you throw swimbaits that weigh 1-10oz you WILL cast off lures when you use braid.
MrNinjac0w if you use a lure over 4 oz I would never go less than 65 braid. 50 braid will break sooner than later.
That's a noob comment...
Haha MrNinja what Lb test are you using 15?
300$ is good price for a shimano calcutta 400 Te. used
Gancho Viejo no
Shimano Calcutta 400D!
What do you think about the shimano calcutta conquest 400?
I prefer the Calcutta for the better gears and bearings. This reel will just last longer with less problems. the lower end reels are fine with smaller lures, but with the big baits and all of the weight and energy they have you are better off with a higher end reel. Hope this helps
thebbztv lol the calcutta conquest low end? a $500+ reel is "low-end"?
***** Calcutta 400 are the higher end reels I use the Conquest even higher. I thought it said Corvalus/Cardiff, my bad on reading it to fast. Those are the lower end reels. 400 Conquest is bullet proof!
would a shimano cardiff 400a do?
+Daniel Zaragoza Yes
I have a question, on you other videos you mentioned that diawa lexa 300 hd is the best reel for big baits , is the diawa better than the Calcutta te or are they both excellent reels for that type of baits

hey just curious do you swap out the bearings on the calcutta?
you convinced me to return the 200D and go for 400D. do you think it is worth $50 for the upgrade? i love buying in retail since you can exchange and no hassle
Yes do the upgrades. They are worth it. Also if you ever have problems with it they will have the updates parts :)
+thebbztv i ended up exchanging with 300EJ. i was dissapointed on the spool shaft being do thin even the 400D! 300Ej has chunky spool shaft and drag star is metal compare to calcutta D's plastic
get the 300EJ or the tranx
calcutta d uses composite graphite. not plastic.
