  • Being a part of this Matai (Chief) ceremony in Samoa was such an honour. 15 of our family members were blessed to receive a Chief title from my Grandmother Leatuvai's family line - the name 'Tiatia'. 3 Generations united and it was heartfelt - a calling, a Divine Contract of the soul and amazing unfolding of events brought me to this day. It was the most powerful ceremonies I have taken part of and I am humbled at the interplay of universal laws and divine love that weaved this beautiful space - truly grateful.
The first ceremony being blessed in a church (first in history - blessings usually take place together with Matai Ceremony).
The second setting is a blessing from the elders of the family.
    Lastly the Matai Ceremony itself.

Tagata Mao'i forgive me if I'm wrong. I've just got back from Savaii, Samoa and were talking to a few Tiatia Matai from Gataivai. They reakon the faleupega states that the Tiatia name originates from there. Told me a little story about two brothers that were late to his majesty Malietoa. But, because they were late there were no more titles left. So they begged him. Long story short Malietoa gave the younger brother the name Tia and the older brother La'ulu. They eventially changed it to Tiatia. Then Tiatia had 2 Sons and 1 Daughter. The 2 Sons left Gataivai and the daughter stayed and so Tiatia gave her the title of Tiatia Aoto'a (Taupou) of the name. The other 2 brothers came back and begged the sister for the name so she gave bestowed it on them. So now there's 3 sides in Gataivai. 1. Tiatia mai Fiakoe 2. Tiatia mai Laku 3. Tiatia Aoto'a. Fiakoe and Laku are just orator (tulafale) titles but the Aoto'a are the only true Tulafale-Ali'i in all Samoa. And because of all this confusion the name sake has been going through the Samoa courts for years to make sure that people are not mixing it up.

I apologize for the late reply.
Original faalupega for Tufu Gata'ivai in Palauli pertaining to Tiatia states: "Tulouna lau fetalaiga a Tiatia na e ituala mavae" - Greeted your speech (you high talking chief) Tiatia who is separated from the road or who is a road apart.
This pertains to Tiatia's abode being gatai (seaward) while the other two important talking chiefs of the village, namely Togia'i and Fa'ala'a live ga'uta (inland) *Togia'i and Fa'ala'a nowadays refers to Fagamalo, Tulia, Laupu'a, and Leuila.
It is true there is a Tiatia in Matautu, Gaga'emauga but he is not directly greeted on Matautu's fa'alupega but is greeted as the Matautu or the Faleiva (House of the Nine) (Tulouna 'oe le Matautu) together with Seuamuli, Loto, Poloa, Ta, Fa'amoe, Pili, Malae, and Tu'uga. They are the Faleupolu or the orator chiefs of Matautu.
There is also a Tiatia in Lalomanu greeted together with Seuala, Mau'u, and Satama as Le Falefa Vae o le To'oto'o (House of the Four Feet of the Orator's Staff). They serve the great orator chief of Aleipata - Fuataga also called Leifi. I do not know where this Tiatia originates from but of course it is very probable that he is tied to Tiatia in Savai'i but maybe not.
Now, Tiatia that we are speaking about descended from La'ululefano. Now judging from the story you spoke about it seems like you are saying La'ulu whose whole name is La'ulunofovaleane is brothers with Tiatia but I disagree. La'ulunofovaleane's brother is La'ululefano. This La'ululefano is who Tiatia is descended from. As far as Aoto'a goes I only know of Aoto'a from Si'umu and also Pago Pago in the Mauga family. Even the name Latu like the brothers Latulagi, Latusagi, and Latufuipea; and their sister Latumailagi and Taleta is from Si'umu. Your source maybe mixing up Si'umu and Gata'ivai?

    Hello
I was just curious if this was in Avao Savai'i? Im aware of my Tiatia family that is here in the united states although i do not keep up with them regularly. My grandfather's mother is a Tiatia from Avao(Matautu, Savai'i). I have never been to Samoa. I thought it was really cool to see this. Well, just trying to gather info on my family tree. That is all.
    Tapafua Tiatia's great grandson,
    God bless you all

    • @tagatamaoi8914

Wesley Akeli your great-grandmother is probably a nofotane from Tufu Gataivai. Tiatia as you can hear in this video is the Tulafale-Ali'i (Great Orator Chief) from Gataivai, Palauli. So depending on who your Great-grandma got her Tiatia from (father, mother, husband), she is most likely from Gataivai but was married into (nofotane) an Avao, Matautu family. Tiatia is not from Matautu. Matautu has Lilo, Lemaveve, Suisala, Sua, Faalea, Peseta, and Lepulu. You are probably related to one of these families from your Avao side.

Wow this is cool to hear! Thank you Tagata Mao'i. I really appreciate this info. From My understanding she is a Tiatia indeed, who married Lologo Levu of Nu'u'uli/Amouli-Tutuila. Now i have more questions regarding family :). thank you again Tagata Mao'i. God bless you
      Respectfully,
      Wes

I apologize in saying this, but after seven months I have discovered that there is in fact a Tiatia from Matautu of which Salei'a, AVAO, Lelepa, Fagamalo, and Safa'i are sub-villages of. This Tiatia is besides the Tiatia in Gata'ivai. This Tiatia is also a Tulafale (Orator Chief) and is part of the faleiva (nine houses) who are the faleupolu of Matautu. The other 8 orator chiefs in line with Tiatia to make the nine houses of orator chiefs are Seuamuli, Loto, Poloa, Ta, Fa'amoe, Pili, Malae, and Tu'uga. So again I apologize. If you say your grandma is a Tiatia from Avao, than it is accurate. It just so happens that the Tiatia in Gataivai is a more prominent orator chief. That is why I and others thought that's probably the Tiatia your grandma is from.
