Almost impossible that this was from 1987. According to Johnette, this song wasn't even written until 1989. Plus, that is Paul Thompson playing drums... he didn't join the band until around 1990.
Yep my mistake from years ago The album came out in 1990 i beleive. I went to the twentieth anniversery gig 10 years ago. Not their best album btw. Free, in my opinion, was.
I'll forever be torn between my obsession with Johnette's voice or Jim's amazing guitar licks. Just glad I got to know them and life's certainly better for those two things.
My fav of all time. Love ya Johnette!!! - She's got principles, never ever a sell-out.She may have become more popular if she did, but she never would. True to herself and her art without regard for her industry's persuasion and demand. She & Jim created incredible music so unique, it has never been duplicated. We were blessed to have Concrete Blonde with all of its variations through the years. Including Dream6.Her music has affected my life profoundly.
so talented, I saw them as a fledgling punk in Boston when they began w 'Still in Hollywood'...Johnette, Jim, Harry, unbelievably talented, raw, real, TIMELESS
I love this band and they will always be in my Rock and Roll Roll Hall of Fame! The vocals are incredible and the guitar work is unique and there are only 3 people on that stage. Thank you for posting this!
Mankey’s tone and cadence!!!! Napolitano’s slightly understated and slowed phrasing!!!! Extra lyrics?? Great spooky version of their great classic!!!! Saw them once; her once!! Love them!!
Not that my age matters, but I’m 56 years old and the fact that CB was simply a fringe band is a huge part of their allure. I’m glad they weren’t huge like many late 80s and early 90s bands. Those of us that were fans from the outset have that in common, if nothing else. Status quo never quite fit me. Even now. CB met me on the fringes. CB blew me away, as is still the case. I’ve been visiting their videos, original or live, as often as I’m able.
Been a Blonde fan for a long time. Not another like them! I never get tired of this live version and watching her play bass and just blow the room away with that voice!
I used to run FOH sound for various bands and was with a rock outfit that opened up for a band that was traveling around supporting their first promoted album. They came in did their sound check and played some rather slow sounding tunes we thought they sounded a lot different than us....after they started their set the shyte hit the fan and I was beat down by the end...they weren't still in Hollywood they were on the loose. They closed the set with an encore of The Animals jam "it's my life and i'll do what i want" that should have been recorded for the Smithsonian
Still one of my all time favorite bands ever. Timeless. Johnette is the real deal. Mankey’s guitar playing is stealthy, and Harry just bangs. Seen them 5x times live and they always bring it.
I rate CB the best band ever assembled ... and with Johnette Napolitano driving it all artistically and with her supernatural voice ... The pleasure gained is quite simply SINFUL ... BUT GREAT!! I'M GONE ... AGAIN!!
Love these guys! I never got to see them live. Shame because I am sure they were great live. I started liking them in the mid to late 80's but it seemed no one else knew who they were at the time. Hot!
I have loved this band for years. But this video so much about the guitarist finger picking, pretty rare. I have only seen them once. It was in StL. Apparently, according to Johnette, the drummer was lost on a drug binge in KC the night before. They did not cancel. The light man played the drums and was very good. Unless she announced it I would have never known. Hope he is doing well.
Don't take this wrong. This isn't even the good shit. This is Concrete Lite as far as I'm concerned. Even so, I fucking love listening to Jim play anything. Am I the only one who hears echo's of Tony Iommi circa 1971? The whole "wall of sound" deals?
anybody know what she's saying when she changes the lyrics from the album when she goes 'we were naked as the day we were born..."? seen them 3 times, twice in L.A. and once in New Orleans. When they played this song down South, I thought the building was gonna collapse. people lost their fucking minds.
i agree. it's hard to see the drummer, but i'm pretty sure it's paul thompson and not harry rushakoff, meaning this video was recorded during or after the recording of the "bloodletting" album. also, johnette's hair in this video is just a smidge longer than it was in the "joey" music video. her hair was shorter through much of the late 80's.
Johnette was starting to really push the sassiness and rock chick look here and the recruitment of Paul Thompson was paying dividends with his professionalism..not to mention Jim Mankeys guitar versatility as always! Success had come!
Interview with the Vampire was published in 1976. Wiki states Concrete Blonde was formed around 1982. In any case my point is that the book inspired the song, which requires the book to be around before the song, not the band itself.
+RainPoetry Except for Jonette explaining where the inspiration for the song came from (and it wasn't Ann Rice), and Interview with a vampire not becoming popular here in the states until mid-80s....
I disagree with your statement. They were really appreciated in the 90's, just not with the main stream folks. They were rated by their fans to be 100% the best band ever.
Awesome, simply awesome. Thanks to whoever put this up on RUclips. I got to see them twice back in the late 1980s-early 1990s. The first was outstanding, even better than this video. The second time was a disaster; it seemed Johnette and James were both high on something. FWIW: Johnette still plays and tours as a solo act in clubs, slips in a few old Concrete Blonde tunes in here sets, too.
I’ve always loved Her voice. Amazing vocal range. This is just a bad-ass song.
They deserve 2 be in the rock n roll Hall of fame
Almost impossible that this was from 1987. According to Johnette, this song wasn't even written until 1989. Plus, that is Paul Thompson playing drums... he didn't join the band until around 1990.
Andrew Erwin thanks for the information. That makes more sense.
Even the Stage, Lights and the grunge sound

@@Chirawalker Sounds more like early Sabbath...
@@pilage98 agree

Incredibly unique guitar style...
Hey I'm also Greg Clark and I agree with you 100%. Pretty cool and ironic!
Yeah, those were the big selling points, plus some excellent song writing :)
opening riff on 'God Is a Bullet', johnette, Jim and Harry, unbelievable talent
She and CB put every ounce of passion, heart and soul in EVERY song they ever did. And of course, her voice was 2nd to none.
30 years and nobody has come close to this masterpiece. I gotta play it again
Just rediscovered them this month.... Been missing them for decades. saw them in Victoria, BC in the early 90's
Saw her live a few years ago.. So much talent and power. That voice just never quits

@@thesummerland6165 Nice. That had to have been phenom. The best shows are always the ones where you get to see a "fav" at a smaller club. ☮
That is the voice of a mythological siren.
You got that right! I'd walk right into the ocean to follow her!
Tie me to the mast so I can listen and live to listen again.

Sharing this all over for my younger female friends. Bad bitches have no age.
Been a Blonde fan for a long time. Not another like them! I never get tired of this live version and watching her play bass and just blow the room away with that voice!
Her fierce baddass voice, those eyes damn
James just puts down the riffs flawlessly ..... Just Unreal !
One of my favorite groups.... kinda like a rally ... it´s not quantity, it´s the quality.
A 3-piece that sounds like a 5 piece. Amazing.
totally!
A great live version of this song , but they say if you remember the eighty's you didn't enjoy yourself . . . Thank man for videos !
Yeah never knew their music till late 80s. But seeing Johnette on her last interviews I wish I coulda had a couple beers with her
My 1st introduction to concrete blonde was in the 8th grade watching mtv(when they played videos).still in Hollywood. I was hooked
Would have been more than a couple lol
Whatever Johnette's sexuality, I fell in love with her the first time I heard her sing.
Oh, how I love thee, Johnette &CB! In my top 10 faves, for certain!
All other rock songs need to apologize for sharing the earth with this masterpiece.
ABSOLUTELY FUCKING AMAZING!!!!!! that was better than the studio album. johnette is so damn hot, too.
Still my favorite. This band is/was amazing.
One of the coolest bands and for some reason hardly anybody remembers.
I used to run FOH sound for various bands and was with a rock outfit that opened up for a band that was traveling around supporting their first promoted album. Really fine guitar solo at the end! This song is a great example of his chord work.

2021 and still my favorite band of all time
love her, saw her at the Whiskey in Hollywood, she was awesome!
Better than the recorded version, awesome!

Lol what an adventure
Amazing live version!
Hell yeah!! Thanks! That whole album is Awesome!! Great performance!
Scary but, beautiful singer.
Dont be scared william
Yup, scary beautiful.
Also frickin' awesome!
I’m new to this song and right away it made me think of the Rob Zombie song “house of 1000 corpses” from the movie of the same name.
Man.....undescribable no words to this....
Thx, that determinately threw me. Bloodletting Andy Prieboy Opened for them. He's a Genius.
I've said it before & again I'll say it. Johnete N. Beats the hell out of any female vocalist.🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Saw them in Houston opened for Sting awesome!
Uniquely Mankey.
Bloodletting was released in the 90's 92 ? The bands first album was released in 87-88 - Great clip from that show - Good interview --got it on vhs
Could you upload your recording to RUclips? The quality of this is better than nothing but maybe yours is better?
+1

James Mankey OMFG.
Elliott Chen Yep.

still a big fan, getting my concrete blonde fix. john fun thanks for that video!
Love it....
Damn, this is even better than the album cut. Goose fleshed me with it’s primal superiority.

Harry Rushakoff. One bad ass drummer,yo.
Sherry Spectre and a cool dude. Got to hang with him and Jim in Baton Rouge outside the Varsity show

Fucking wow!!!
Johnette Napolitano te amo!
Love Love Love!!! Drink my blood baby, every last drop......
she lives in a trailer in the Mojave Desert!
Well then, that explains why their LAST full album, was named Mojave.
This is my jam
freaken awesome. Love Johnette
I love this performance-but I wonder why Johnette is carrying the vocal by herself? The band sounds fantastic singing together too!
Nice!
So damn good!
I love this, but it always reminds me of when I saw them live and some stoner yelled "I ..am.... Iron Man" during this song's intro.
Hard core. Yea

Awesome!! \m/
Manky used the play with Sparks.....
Didn't this song come out in 1990? or was it recorded in 1987?
man look at THOSE EYES
Anne Rice inspired a lot of musicians.
Concrete Blond was around a LONG time before Ann Rice...
Actually it's pretty obvious she's referring to an emotional vampire.
Anne Rice inspired Twilight and every wussy whiney weeping boo hoo mopey vampire since. Lestat, Lewis and company were the lamest vamps ever.
Which Danzig Album is this from??
Love them. But not 1987: album wasn’t released till 1990.
where was this filmed?
Annie Wilson and Nina Hagen?
7 string guitar?
nah
NM
WOW, No i know how mhe pulls that stuff off
Most underrated band EVER....I cannot understand why they/she weren't more appreciated in the 90s.......it was always more of a cult following....
Absolutely!

Johnette Napolitano has the most powerful amazing voice! no other female singer ever can compare!
there are better, just dont narrow your brain she good though
There is no better. Only different.
Didn't know about that, gonna go look it up now, thanks!
She might even be better than Ann Wilson! But, two of the top voices imo!!
Her name is Doro Pesch and there is no other female voice that can compare to what she can fucking do.
My favorite female singer!! Bad Ass, Real Deal.
Man she's fucking fierce
Johnette rocks!!
Ray, I could not agree with you more :) She was the real deal.
Her friend, the late great Chrissy Amphlett was pretty darn awesome too.
My favorite singer man or woman. She is truly badass and severely underrated.
Highly underrated band playing in their prime. Great stuff.
Awesome, simply awesome. Thanks to whoever put this up on RUclips. I got to see them twice back in the late 1980s-early 1990s. The first was outstanding, even better than this video. The second time was a disaster; it seemed Johnette and James were both high on something.

So cool when you can't tell a recording and live. Just excellent
they are the freaking best :)
Johnette Napolitano is deliciously haunting.
BLOODLETTING WAS THEIR BEST ALBUM!!!!!
I’m starting to think Concrete Blonde was an influence on grunge.
