hahaha I love you man. I'm Danny The Medic, pawing at it like a cat. I'm dying over here. Nice work on the axe. You do make all valid points, Gibson are really overpriced. A few years ago i bought an Epiphone SG Pro, it was an awesome guitar, no bs loved it. Then one day they had a Custom Custom Shop SG in the music store. Custom in the name twice. Heavy price tag. So I laughed, picked it up and said let's see if it really is better than an Epiphone.... I bought it. It is an amazing guitar. I know the tonewood debate is a hot topic, but with a custom shop they test the "resonant frequency" of all the pieces of wood and match them together (within a certain tolerance I'm sure), I thought it was bologne. It's not. When you strum a chord the whole guitar vibrates in unison, the notes feedback on themselves like butter, I've never felt anything like that in my life. Was it worth it? I don't know man, it was crazy expensive, but it absolutely inspires me and makes me play completely differently. I feel like such a sucker buying a guitar with Custom twice in the name, but I play the shit out of that guitar. I have severely compromised the nitro, but at least I did it and not some jerk in a "lab" pulling it out of a freezer and dropping keys on it. I both regret and adore that guitar. But for that one guitar, I have played 50 Gibsons that do not make me smile, at all, and I completely understand people's frustration with Gibson and their prices. I could have bought 3 different player grade American Fenders.... yet somehow I am still happy. I guess all I can say is don't ever pick up an expensive Gibson because you may just fall in love accidentally

    • @dannythemedic

"chord the whole guitar vibrates in unison" sounds great, but I BET you that if you played that at a gig, people will love it, then you play a harley benton, people will love that too.. because you are you and it is you that makes the music! cheers!

Love your videos Danny. You are spot ON with your evaluation of over-priced and under-built Gibsons. There is absolutely no reason for Gibson Les Pauls to cost $3 to $10,000 or more. It's pure greed on their part. The proof of that is you can buy a Harley-Benton with a "10" TOP for a small fraction of the cost of a Gibson. People like bragging rights and stupidly over-spend for brand names. Look at what people pay for ladies "designer purses". Same as the Gibson phenomenon. It looks like you did a great job on your Solo kit. Congrats. Nicely done. Thanks for all the great vids. Keep up the good work!

For some reason Danny, I enjoy listening to you talk. Let me tell you a little tip I learned along the way about bolt-on necks. With the guitar tuned up to pitch, carefully and slightly loosen up each of the four neck bolts. Not very much, just a tad. When you get to the 4th one, you will probably hear a pop or crack noise. This is the neck seating in. The strings pull it into the pocket nicely. I do this with every one of my bolt-on neck guitars. I believe it improves the tone, sustain and tuning/intonation. You only have to do this once in the guitar's lifetime unless you take the neck off again. BTW, the guitar looks great. You will get a lot of enjoyment from that instrument. I made a single cut LP style guitar with a bolt-on neck and I LOVE it. I had a roasted maple neck made for it. Feels wonderful.

Good work man. I built couple of guitars by myself. The last one I did is custom telecaster that is super light with Wilkinson hardware, Alpha pots and Roswell pickups and I did shou sugi ban ( torching wood) technic on body and neck. It looks amazing and it's super cheap to make it. Now, the point... how it plays? I went to some jamming session here in Shanghai with that guitar and I give it to other players to use it that night. I didn't even properly play it before that session but I wanted to hear how it sounds in anothers hands. They were amazed. They can't believe that it sounds great, super light and it so easy for playing. Now...I got custom orders to make 3 more guitars 😊

I've tried every guitar nut. Graphtech makes the best and they are self-lubricating and wear longer before replacement. I've also found you can get a bad neck but it's rare nowadays. As long as the truss-rod works properly and you can dress and polish your frets, you can vastly improve it yourself. A two-way truss-rod is even better because it allows for front-bow as well as back-bow adjustment and necks are now more accurate due to precise CNC fret cuts to within 1/1000 of an inch which helps the intonation up/down the neck. Then when you get the nut cut just right and the bridge intonated and height adjusted, you have a premium guitar and neck with string action like butter and smoother than a baby's @zz. Better than a Gibson and way less dough.

You did a great job on this guitar im sure it sounds and plays great! You are totally right about Gibson in the last part of your video. I have played at least 30-40 Gibsons since ive been playing guitar,Literally i've played about 4 which i sat back and said "wow this is a great guitar, i cant find a single thing wrong with it its just all good".I also have to include Fender too especially recently. The past year their prices have gone up,and iv'e seen guitars and heard a lot of people saying the fretwork has been really bad and this is on the mexican line even the american to custom shop american. Just to compare you can get a FGN Boundary Odyssey which is their cheapest S type model all made in Japan with Gotoh hardware including their own brand pickups for like 750 BUCKS. Sure it doesnt have a trem system but thats fine especially if they feel the quality of the trem system at that price can't match the rest of the hardware which i totally understand. They have a T type at this range too and even have a HS T type model at this price. So you basically get a made in Japan guitar for the price of a mid mexican that has incredible build quality, incredible attention to detail and its all made in Japan at the FGN factory. They also have a range of single cuts that are awesome guitars for the price too starting at about 1350 bucks. FGN for those who don't know are a very well respected factory that makes the Japanese Fenders and high end Ibanez guitars, and i promise you they don't mess around when it comes to quality control and the quality of the guitars they make at all price points.

Welcome to the build your own guitar world.... !! That's awesome... Great looking guitar. I became a builder for the same reason... Except Im a fender guy. I got pist they were selling me down graded guitars that were deliberately down graded to be cheaper... and that they'd only make me a guitar they were capable of if Im willing to shell out $4,000. I found that ridiculous man.. So I started realizing I could make my own parts casters and do way better.
Now mind you.. Im not reselling these guitars. But collecting guitars for resale is a different thing then buying guitars for your own use.

If you're doing a lot of guitars (like you are), it's well worth it to invest in a set of nut files. Even pre-slotted nuts still need to be filed to get it dialled in properly.
You can even get double sided ones which save a couple of bucks over individuals. Just work out what size strings you predominantly use (like a 10-46) and go with a set to match. But a 10-46 set will still work well for 9-42 set too. But don't buy the cheap crappy ones of ebay!

If you add up the hours spent and multiply by a fair hourly rate how much did it cost?
Patents might apply to functional stuff like humbuckers. Looks come under Trade Marks and possibly Copyright.
Totally agree with the wood comments. An electric guitar needs to be stable and look good but that is 99.9999999999% of the wood accounted for.
I have never understood why premium cars cost more to service than low cost. If they are so good servicing should be easier and less frequent.

@@guitarhobbywithdannythemedic I watched all of it but must have forgotten some if it. You bought a Solo guitar made from different wood to what was advertised, fitted premium gear and cleaned it up nice. You say it is so far costing around 900. I was trying to compare with a Gibson LP price. In the UK a Tribute is £1099 which is about USD1300. The Gibson has a set neck and nitro which I agree are both inferior but they are also more expensive.
I do not know what authentic means either as as you have said previously the authentic guys are dead and the factories and tooling were all sold off.

Also Gibson is not so expensive. That's not really true. Compared to PRS USA made and components (a true comparison) set neck guitars, Gibson is cheaper. Gibson also has entry level models that are set neck and come in under Fender prices for their American made bolt on necks that are much more machine built. It's become clear by the fact people only mention Gibson in these discussions that the motive is driven by blind hatred (not an accusation against Danny, he will converse respectfully on the topic).
Truth is Gibson isn't for everyone, but everyone thinks it should be for them and demand changes. That's not how the world works. It's cool if a Gibson isn't for you and you want something else. That's 100% acceptable for someone deciding what to do with their money. The flip side is also true, nothing wrong if you want to buy a Gibson with your money.
I own Gibsons, PRSes, Fenders, American and MIM, Epiphones, Ibanez, Squier, Harley Benton, Schecter, and more.
