You don't have to be nice to Spelljammer, it's a shallow husk of its former self and someone really needs to take it out behind the barn and re-enact the final scene of Old 'Yeller.

Oh I wasn't trying to be nice to it or anything, it's not as terrible as the memes have made it out to be. In fact, I'd say it's one of the better products they've dropped in a hot second, barring the hadozee controversy.

@@Indestructoboy I mean....... ship combat, space travel etc is one of the core aspects of scifi and Spelljammer was just bare bones as hell.
"Uhh.... just fly your ship at them, shoot like a ballista or something and then inevitably just board them making it all pointless I guess?"

Traveller is a must play for any ttrpg gamer.
It's one of the oldest TTRPGs with It's own feel.
It can be played very light & fast but if people really want to they can play it as if it's a simulation.

I am _deeply_ offended by the comparison to Star Trek 😉
Nah, not really.. But I would put it more Star Wars + Asimov's foundation series + HardSF.

I really want to run a full campaign at some point using the Alien RPG by Free League as well. For some reason they packed a LOT of stuff in that to run a full on sci-fi campaign that goes way deeper than just the Alien stuff.

You said "Dark Matter" and my mind went immediately to the campaign setting "Dark Matter," for the TSR Sci-0Fi game, Alternity. Alternity was a really good Sci-Fi system and a pre-cursor to 3rd edition D&D, but came at the end of the TSR existence and the buyout by WotC, so didn't get brought forward. Still have it and played it quite a bit back in the late 90s. Also surprised you didn't mention Starfinder from Paizo.

Death in Space deserved more love from the ttrpg. It one of the best system imo and works well for most type of game. Also the guys making it have release 2 music disk for it as ambience and background noise. Its great.

I'm looking for a genre change for my table; been playing within the fantasy archetype for quite awhile now and I need a change. Thank you for sharing your impressions of these many different game systems. I'm looking forward to taking a deep dive on many of these over the coming weeks

    Points in favor of spelljammer
    - bestiary is the closest that we'll get to Dark Sun (compare to 4e Dark Sun's bestiary)

Traveller is fast simple to play and, somehow, still has room for adding on all your favourite elements to your game. Traveller's system can be adapted fairly easily to ANY Sci-Fi setting.

Ahhh man, I was really expecting you to say Mothership hehe anyway I’m excited to see your view on Dead in Space, but also try to give it a try for Mothership, there’s a quick one shot called The haunting of the Ypsolum 14. It’s a pamphlet, very easy to run.

The obvious one not in this list because indestructo didn't buy it but it it's still relevant to sci fi is Starfinder. It's the most built up system out there. Even if you plan on running something like Dark Matter it's still useful for lore and worldbuilding, plenty of planets, various Alien species to use for NPC's the players can encounter, ideas for mundane and magic items etc.

I’m actually talking to Thurston at Paizo about a Starfinder 2 private game. PF isn’t my preferred system, but I’ve been hearing interesting things about the remaster

@@Indestructoboy Hopefully it's fun! The action economy of PF 2e I think would translate well to a setting like Starfinder which has a more ranged and technology/gadget focus compared to DND or PF.
