    I agree with Jess. This country should be calling for a ceasefire. The practical reality of how that is achieved is another question. How do you deal with two groups of people who want to end each other and living as peaceful neighbours is not on their agendas. That does not change what this country should be asking for. If you dont ask, you dont get.

    Jess Phillips is one of the most decent and competent politicians that Labour has. Despite thinking the official policy is well-judged, I appreciate her honest decision. I hope to see her being effective and influential in public policy in a Labour Government.

    All parties involved made the right decision. Jess voted with her conscience and stuck to her morals and I think her constituents will reward her for that. Keir made the right decision as leader of the opposition to exercise caution (the "humanitarian pause" phrasing is a ceasefire all but in name only). Imagine if Keir came out strongly in favor for a ceasefire just when Corbyn is on live television refusing to condemn Hamas. The right wing media and the Tories would have resurrectted and amplified the "Labour is anti-semitic" rhetoric, resulting in Labour paying a heavy price at the polls. I totally understand Sir Keir's position. He has no choice but to walk a tightrope.

    • @greghill7759
      @greghill7759 11 месяцев назад

      It appears that, regardless of the fact that people are STILL being slaughtered, the absurd conventions of our own parliamentary system still view "voting with one's conscience by sticking to one's morals" as only one of a number of acceptable options.... including pondering the implications of the phrase "humanitarian pause" against those of "ceasefire", or the option of "walking a tightrope". No wonder it's become a circus.

    Even MSF state that a humanitarian pause wouldn't do much because the bombing that would happen after the pause would undo all the humanitarian work. Stating this isn't an extremist point. Thus ceasefire is a key point.

    The government can't claim that Rwanda is safe, while simultaneously declaring it a lawless violent hellhole that acts as a deterrent.

      Like bailing water from a sinking boat with a sieve. Hundreds of thousands of arrivals, and would a few loaded planes going to make even the tiniest difference? The wasted money going to Rwanda would be 1000x better used ramping up processing asylum claims + hiring immigration officers + going after people smuggling gangs

    John Sopel said this doesn't matter as the opinion of Labour politicians won't change a thing for Israel/Palestine, which is true - BUT it matters to UK citizens /residents that they get to see, how adjusted their representatives' moral compasses are, and their reasons for voting whichever way they did. This matters greatly.
    On another note, the way Labour / Starmer dealt with this difficult and painful issue * may * just form a kind of blueprint to start to heal the immense rifts in UK society.

      You are yet another example of little England. Since 1945 the USA is a Republic Empire, much like Rome. The USA has ideals, but also is involved in realpolitik, just like any empire. When it decides it needs to, the USA can be very brutal. Look at the 1993 aid mission in Somali. In Mogadishu over the course of just TWO days, the US lost 18 dead but killed over 1,500. If the USA was involved in combat the phrase from the river to sea would refer to the Palestinian graveyard.

    This was a great video to watch. I am deeply disappointed in Jess Phillips. She has been a solid and smart Labour MP. When Keir Starmer declared that Israel had the right to defend itself, he also means that the UK has the right to defend itself under similar circumstances. That's the type of Foreign Policy leadership the UK needs (please see Mr. Atlee's foreign policy). If a 911 type event happened in the UK, the electorate would expect the military and security services to step in and protect the public from further incident. Ms. Phillips takes the moral high horse view. She would be shouting the loudest for action if a 911 event happened in the UK. Now, she will not shape Labour foreign policy. People are counting on Labour to fix their economic problems. The Middle East is not something Parliament can do anything about nor the Labour party. Israel vs Palestine is not the issue. It is UK security and how would you handle it as a government.

    • @Dickie2702
      @Dickie2702 11 месяцев назад +2

      Of course I would expect my government to defend me but I don't think that would include undertaking a vengeful and disproportionate killing spree, mainly of innocent people. As the Secretary General of the UN stated "this ( Oct 7th) didn't happen in a vacuum."

      @Dickie2702 800 dead from the start. 200 hostages. Hostages still not free. UK citizens shouldn't have to take that risk under a similar situation. Defending UK citizens is the priority.

      @@colinthompson3111 are you aware that Israel has doubled the amount of Palestinians detained in the West Bank, mostly without charge, since Oct 7th? The Kneset has just passed legislation, last Wednesday, to reduce the mandatory 3.5sq mtrs per prisoner due to over crowding. 4,000 Palestineans alone have been incarcerated under the Ilegal Combatents Law, their crime, they were working in Israel at the time of the October 7th attack. Deaths in the West Bank have gone up from their 'usual' 3-4 a day to close to 10. What happened on October 7th was appauling but measured against the suffering of Palestineans for the last 75 years, not so much. If you think that Israel will eliminate Hamas, think again, these people are without hope, they will continue to resist the best way they can.

    • @colinthompson3111
      @colinthompson3111 11 месяцев назад

      @hiromiw649 You might want to check with your Serbian friends. Their country was bombed by NATO. Serbia is in Europe, I believe.
      On 911, Canadians and Americans had Fortress North America attacked by planes.
      Violent Scenarios in which people are killed are usually war gamed by governments around the world.
      If a 911 type of event happens in the UK, you will be confronting the same situation Israel has to deal with. Keir Starmer's initial reaction was correct, and Jess Phillips, unfortunately, didn't think it through. 😕

The original SNP anendment seems to have disappeared from search engines, was obviously a ploy to try to split Labour. Disgusting behaviour all round.
