  • Bakersfield, Calif. - A pedestrian was killed and another individual injured in a multiple-vehicle collision at the intersection of Oak Street and 24th Street on the evening of July 4.
    Bakersfield Police officers were dispatched to the scene at approximately 8:39 p.m. Upon arrival, they found an adult male lying near the roadway with major injuries, according to police. The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene.
    The drivers of all vehicles involved remained at the scene and cooperated with the investigation. According to the Bakersfield Police Department, the pedestrian was stationary on the center divider when a northbound vehicle on Oak Street failed to negotiate an eastbound turn onto 24th Street. The vehicle ran over the center divider, striking the pedestrian and four vehicles on westbound 24th Street before coming to a stop.
    One driver was transported to a local hospital with minor injuries. The driver of the northbound vehicle was determined to be under the influence and was subsequently booked into Kern County Jail.
