  • Northland, stunning yet struggling, consistently tops New Zealand’s deprivation index by nearly every measure.
In the lead-up to Budget Day 2024, John Campbell and his camera operator Clint Bruce travelled to the North to uncover the challenges faced by locals and to explore how the Budget might impact their lives.

This is the sort of journalism we need. To hear the little person, the local person, the people that do the hard mahi, that bring mana to our communities. NOT the people paid off by oil, coal, gambling, landlord money that spend more than our annual salary on travel. Not from the PM who earns 500k/yr to then turn around and lie to us, telling us he will make a change for the better and then only benefit the top 0.1%
Thank you John, Thank you 1News, Thank you to the team behind this. The real ones who went out of their way to hear the voices of those normally rejected.
I really hope that we get better public transport, better education, free food in ALL schools, an equitable healthcare system, strong environmental protections, no GST and strong progressive tax systems(taxing the mega-wealthy, the land hoarders, and a commerce commission that isn't afraid to go after the megacorps that price-gouge, that extract the wealth of communities just to pay their CEOs millions. THAT is what will help make Aotearoa the "Clean Green Country people believe we are.

Thanks for the professionalism that you're portraying in this series. This is great investigative journalism, allowing the people who know the reality of living in the current economic situation to express it themselves. We are on the wrong track with this government.

Everyone being interview talks about needing more funding but where does this come from ? This govt needs to focus on improving productivity, more STEM jobs and R&D. Increase the number of high paid jobs and businesses that would generate tax. What are we doing in this area? Our R&D spend is half the OCD average, our productivity keep failing compared to the improvements other countries are generating. This is why Australia can afford to pay 30% more for the same job.

A great road trip, John & Clint. "A economic Covid without the masks" pretty much sums up what the majority of New Zealanders are thinking & experiencing, but despite this, you gotta love the people of the far north! It is in good hands with the great people whom you met. Pls don't be shy with the Finance Minister when you interview her. With losing Fair Go and Sunday, we need all of the revelant questions to be answered, including the tough ones. ❤

Firstly THANK you for bringing the far North to the rest of NZ. I work in dog rescue alongside several rescues from the far North who are in crisis battling against dog fighting rings abuse & neglect which all stems from lack of income for people I would love to see you reach out & bring the absolute National disgrace that is animal abuse inhthe far North

ABSURD. Landlords get $3bn in tax cuts, there is no comprehensive capital gains tax, no inheritance tax and no gift tax in NZ, so the rich are massively subsidised by the poor who cant even afford to live in NZ. It makes me sick to the stomach. A society is judged by how it treats its poor. The government will deliver nothing for the poor in NZ in the budget and has already reindexed benefits and made the disability benefit criteria tougher.

I think another very important determinant is the fiat system we live under. The New Zealand economy is small and because the US dollar is the global reserve currency it has a major impact on decisions made in the country.

Tēna kōrua matua John & Clint. My whānau originates from Hokianga, but I have been living in the UK for almost 20 years. Taitokerau is abundant in manaakitanga, yet it seems to go unnoticed by the central government's priorities, as indicated by its overrepresentation in the purple data bands. Hope Mangamuka gorge will reopen in 2024/25.

As an Eastside Christchurch resident, I remember the amazing reporting John Campbell & his team did persistently in the post-earthquakes trauma of inquests, EQC, school closures, bureaucracy awfulness. Talking to people who had no other way of being listened to. So grateful the work still continues. Man I feel for these communities because they really matter, but my guess the budget will have nothing meaningful for them.

My take: This govt is all about profits. Their only concern is to create Industrial and Commercially owned businesses to generate that profit at the expense of the people regardless of ability. Hence children in coal mines mentality. This includes mining for minerals, gems and resources. Selling off NZ brands and importing goods and services to increase trade rather than utilizing our own resources.
I believe Northland is at the forefront of their people being pushed out or forced to sell and the easiest way to do that is offer false dreams and starve public services. The 4-lane highway going in is not for the benefit of the people but in preparation for the entry of offshore mining companies and, the elites future vision of Zealandia.
Māori and Te Tiriti for the protection of land and people is a huge barrier and it is the number one priority to remove all their rights to enable this govts plan to fruition.

The reason why i voted for National is the tax cut. Everyone is going to be happy when they see extra money in there bank account or on their pay slip. Those who are against it should not accept the extra money from the tax cut.

I need tax relief for my 17 rental properties because its really hard out there owning 20 million bucks in assets someone else is paying for NZ really needs a property focused economy so we can get the wealth we so richly deserve Okay so the poor smucks have to pay for it but if you get rich like me you would have real problems too
