    I wrote a listening and accent reduction book called "Whaddaya Say" (Pearson Education) on this subject. These pronunciations are called "reduced forms". They're caused by speed of speech. I did a 700 page formal research study on the causes of reduced forms at the Univ. of Calif., Los Angeles, and I only studied highly educated native speakers. I found statistical significance for speed of speech as the main cause for these pronunciation changes. Many of my English language learners say "Americans talk so fast". They're absolutely correct. When native speakers talk at a natural speed, these changes happen automatically -- with no planning.

      I have a copy of your book Ms. Weintein and it is SENSATIONAL! I know it is out of print, so I feel very fortunate to have my copy. My students have a ball every time I use it in class with them. Why don't you reprint it? Please?? It would be good to so many people out there! Please? Best regards from Brazil!

    Ronnie ! I like the way you teach English. It is slow, word by word pronounced correctly as required to learn by the students, short and sweet and not boring. Learning from a native speaker has many advantages. I am recommending my wife to take you as her English Guru. Thank you !

    One minor clarification: "Gonna" can replace "going to" to express future action as in "I'm gonna leave tomorrow."
    "Gonna" never replaces "going to" in the present progressive as in "I'm going to the store."

    Nice! This is a great lesson.
    This should definitely help people sound more like native speakers.
    All of us English speakers are so lazy when we talk, it's true, lol.
    I should mention, though... that while "lotsa" has the same meaning as "a lot of", it's actually a derivative of "lots of" (which is proper English and something you could see written, formally).
    The colloquial version of "a lot of" would be something like "a lotta", which is very common in native English.
    Some example sentences:
    "That's a lotta money!"
    "You've got a lotta nerve!"
    "You're putting me under a lotta stress!"
    "There's a lotta movies to choose from."

    As a native English speaker, I never use the words on the right(always could have, should have, would have) but they are common in very casual speech or less educated speakers. However the words on the left(besides hafta which I think also is not common among educated speakers) are used super commonly. Great video!

    I don't think it is entirely important to sound like a native speaker.
    The most important thing is to sound natural, clear and get your point
    across. Every country has its own accent doesn't make it incorrect. The
    idea is to communicate and that should be our focus.

    • @wellemevans3519
      @wellemevans3519 8 лет назад +6

      Yeah, you are right, although people in English speaker countries won't speak like a robo or like they write. So if we want to communicate with them we also need to know what they are saying or what they mean when they're talking naturally.

    Oh! mmmm... The word water. Have you ever heard how someone pronounces this word something like " a wooaa "?
    Would you accept for yourself this way of the pronunciation of this word as they do, just for a sake of learning a common street english slang ?
    That all depend of the level of life.. Isn't it? Don't know if I'm allowed to do this.. Anyway I wouldn't blame anyone or teach .., because I only start to learn english myself. However I would tell you my own opinion how i think is better to learn any language.
    I think we have to do it with a respect, for instance from the begining we ought to learn a proper, literature language. And then in life.. by using the skill of normal talk with native english, we may to learn some of this words in natural way. It's seems to me to funny when someone is mooing in English or mumbles , and at the same time mixing their "speach " with a street slang. What about the words which are represented here. I beleive, that the way how peopel started pronounce them, came as a result of a fast talk, and because the new generation don't want to (dontwanna) bother themselves with the correct pronunciation.
    In addition.. I have to admit to learn a slang and even a swear words is much easier than a normal words ..
    All this rubbish... it's irremovable and it is really stucking in our heads..

    • @marleyrobertson6417
      @marleyrobertson6417 9 лет назад +2

      Yeah, they mean the same thing. "I have a test tomorrow, I gotta study." Can also be said "I have a test tomorrow, I hafta study.". Some people think "I have got to" is incorrect because you are using more words to simply say "I have to", but you hear "I've got to" just as much as "I have to", and their shorter versions. You could say that maybe "I've got to " can be used for something slightly more urgent. Like "I've got to go to the doctor, this wound is getting really bad." But basically they are the same.

    • @Dani-uc2zg
      @Dani-uc2zg 9 лет назад

      Marley robertson
      thanks a lot.. I know now, but how about the use 'much' in your sentence, "you hear "I've got to" just as MUCH as "I have to" ... personally I tend to use 'many', am I incorrect? Anyway thanks for your explanation.

    • @marleyrobertson6417
      @marleyrobertson6417 9 лет назад +1

      Yeah, in that case you have to use "much". To use many I would have to say something like ---I hear "I've got to" just as many times as I hear "I have to". Otherwise it has to be "much".
      I see Susan just as much as I see Jim.
      I work just as much as John does.
      I eat just as much as Brian eats.
      and so on.
      I believe it's because it's an uncountable amount I'm referring to.
      PS. yeah I just looked it up, many is used for an uncountable amount, much is used for countable. So when I said "many times" -- times is countable. Like "5 times" or" 20 times".
