thanks dereck. miles was the picasso of our time. all of his music was beautiful until the very end as he never stopped growing and changing. i was lucky enough to see him in the sixties with the classic group..herbie, wayne.. also later with the electric groups.. jarrett, michael henderson, gary bartz etc. wonderful!!!
What an incredible Miles vinyl collection you have. Miles is my fav jazz artist, but most of my Miles albums are on cd. The Jazz Track I have on vinyl is my fav followed by by Bitches Brew, but there are so many great ones. I love watching old Miles interviews. Thanks for this feature on Miles.-Lou
What amazes me dear Dereck is that any introduction to Miles is needed, perhaps I am just old but Miles is ingrained in my music history, heck when I was at school in England in the seventies his music was part of the curriculum, in fact in a silent way was described by our teacher in the exact same way you described it! we listened to him in class! I don’t comment often but thank you for being you, so refreshing in this ever increasingly fake world!

I’m going back through your videos and kind of doing a Derek’s greatest hits and some how this one managed to get by me the first time. In my opinion Miles was one of the greatest , if not the single greatest musician of the 20th century. He’s also one of the greatest musician/composers of all time. It’s a crime that his influence on music is not as celebrated as it should be today. Genius is an overused word in this day and age but it’s the best adjective we have to describe Mr. Davis, although no single word can truly describe a person as complicated as Miles truly was. Thanks for this Derek. It made my day. Love ya brother!
Miles was my intro to Jazz and will forever be my favourite Jazz artist. The level of depth and consistency of work he put out is second to none. Plus, so many of the musicians that he worked with would go on to have great careers of their own. Much love!
Miles Davis' catalog has some many defining moments in my life. Miles In The Sky, Bitches Brew, Jack Johnson, In A Silent Way, etc., all changed not only the palette for musicians, but the whole canvas. Always a new vision. Thanks!
D, I'm deep into a Miles kick so dug out this video from a few years ago. Agree with just about everything you say here. That's not to say that I *disagree* with anything - I just don't know enough about some of his latter day recordings to have any opinion on them. Will rectify that soon. I'm with you on the late 60s, early 70s electric era. Wow. The live recordings from those days are just mind blowing. I'm right there with you - Agharta, Pangaea, Dark Magus, Live Evil. I have all of them on a combination of vinyl and CD. The Bootleg Series on CD is awesome. Each comes with a DVD of a live performance. About to chew some edibles and pop one in! Peace, brother. Impossible to overstate Miles Davis relevance. One of the greatest musicians of the XXth Century (maybe in "the top 10", I'd dare to say). It's very encouraging to know that at least some of the American children know about him, thanks for sharing that information.

Wow, this video was unexpected. Everyone has there favorite Miles Davis era. Mine is the second quintet with Tony Williams on drums. It's so explosive and innovative just wonderful music. I do enjoy the electric stuff also just not as much. And also the first quintet with both Cannonball Adderly and John Coltrane. Just amazing. And the drumming of Philly Joe Jones must be mentioned. His swing and feel was ridiculous. All of this stuff is worth checking out. I don't want to be the guy who says what you don't have. but..............Haha. For anyone still reading this, the partner album to "My funny Valentine" is the uptempo tunes from that concert called "Four and More" Everyone should have that album. It is Magic. Great vid Dereck. Thanks for this video. I've owned all Miles' studio recordings at one time. Unfortunately, I had to give up my collection when I moved to the beach. Just didn't have the space. It's a trade off because the beach is so immaculate & lovely. Thank goodness for RUclips. Enjoyed your commentary. Keep it up!
Outside of his music the following quote is really all the reading necessary required to get a line on Mr. Davis. He didn't suffer fools regardless of rank, and he was ever aware that he was Miles Davis. Just like many of you here I'm sure, I have a pretty eclectic taste in music. From Hardcore punk to Death Metal to ProgressiveRock to Hip Hop, I love any music that is made with passion and a sense of exploration. I didn't hear any of Mr. Davis's music until I was in my mid to late teens. The first time I heard Kind of Blue something in my molecular structure changed. From there I began working my way through his discography and ever since then I have listened to it, studied it, attempted play and dissect it, and tried to turn anyone I could on to it. I also hear it's influence everywhere. Especially Kind of Blue. So much of the music we have today would been drastically different if Mr. Miles Dewey Davis III had followed his father into medicine instead of inventing "black classical music." In 1987, he was invited to a White House dinner by Ronald Reagan. Few of the guests appeared to know who he was. During dinner, Nancy Reagan turned to him and asked what he’d done with his life to merit an invitation. Straight-faced, Davis replied: “Well, I’ve changed the course of music five or six times. What have you done except f**kthe president?”
I'm a giant fan of Miles Davis. You can play these records a million times and can never tire of them. Of all my records, they are honestly my most prized
ps ps. I just got Live Evil, I had a hard time getting into what they were doing but every time this happens with an album, just means it'll be on heavy rotation. That drum solo is off the charts. Btw, Agharta was an album I didn't think I'd like as much, but became a favourite. There's a track on that where even Brain Eno couldnt match the intense ambience it absolutely masters. Can't believe it's live, Its amazing

I love TUTU I have it on my iPhone and I listen to it when I’m walking late night in Chicago in the Uptown neighborhood is like if the city blend with the music.
So many great, classic albums. Your story about the record store writing disrespectful stuff on the Tutu cover reminded me of a local record shop I used to hang out at in San Diego where they would comment on certain "difficult" albums by taping an aspirin on the cover...one I remember them doing that to was Robert Fripp/League of Gentlemen.
Filles de Kilimanjaro is a favorite of mine! I’m also a big fan of his electric records like On The Corner, Live-Evil and Big Fun. They were just SO unique and funky, it’s amazing stuff! I still get chills no many how many times I hear On The Corner!

As a trumpet player myself I have loved Miles and have been inspired by him for a long time. Maybe it was Sketches Of Spain that first got my attention. But it was Bitches Brew that really hit me like a bolt of lightning. Hearing the album for the first time on late night radio was an experience! Benny Maupin's eerie bass clarinet offerings to the recording were chilling.
Hey Dereck I hope all is well with you. Yeah, Miles was truly great, a real american hero. I love the electric period and the stuff right before he went electric the band with with Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter, Tony Williams and Wayne Shorter. That stuff blows my mind...but Miles is always good.

I fucking love Miles!! Dereck I would recommend you pick up Panthalassa: The Music of Miles Davis its by Bill Laswell and he remixes some choice cuts. If you don't already have it. Laswell was given access to the original four track masters and the result is a sweet jazz and ambient masterpiece. All the tracks are from Miles electric period I have it in cd I've never been able to find it on vinyl.
I figured you had but wanted to pipe in :-) I have been a fan of Bill Laswell for years do you have much of his stuff as well? Perhaps a Laswell video is in the hopper....
The name Miles Davis seems to stick better with people then other jazz musicians names. But he deserves to be remembered, he should get more appreciation even now. They should celebrate this man in his home country and everywhere else.

Im with you on Tutu, I love that album and don't understand the criticism. How rare is Live Evil Dereck? I've never seen it out in the wild and it intrigues me immensely. I would prefer to get a vinyl copy and was wondering about its availability. Thank you!
Interesting to see your responses to different periods. I now like his electric period the most also, though many years ago I only liked his bebop/ cool jazz, especially " 'Round About Midnight". Saw him play in Chicago in '80 or '81 on the Man With The Horn Tour, when he seldom faced the audience! I was a tad underwhelmed by the show except for the fact that (like seeing the Stones in '78), hey, that's Miles f'ing Davis 50 feet away playing live! By the way, I've wondered for a while if you dig the Yo' Miles! recordings or the Burnt Sugar collective out of NYC. I find them both usually very worthwhile.

Boy, you are right about the history thing. Miles is so great because he hits so many moods. I like Bitch's, but want to hear his older stuff somemes. Milestones is good, but IREALLY love Sketches. The reason the writer might have said "but you don't have" because you showed off your original Sketches. No big deal, we collectors all do it. We are proud of our vinyl and how we love the music. In Stamford, CT we had a darn good jazz station that was such a blessing. Heard all sorts of music that I would have missed. Happy Thanksgiving. I really appreciate listening to you. Wish we could converse. We also had a major great local jazz music store called Sally's, which helped. She had many recommendations.
I think On The Corner is mistakenly given the short shrift from critics because it's improvisational rather than traditionally composed. I read a year or so back that Carlos Santana was making an album with some of the Bitches Brew musicians; hoping that comes to fruition.

What I can't stand "of Porgy and Bess", is not Porgy and Bess - I have not been overexposed to repetition like you were - but the thousands of female singers who sing "Summertime" like a cat in heat, making a sexually charged version of the song, completely missing the point. By the way, the same thing applies to "Fever", most versions have nothing to do with the feel of the original by Little Willie John, where he is the victim of desire, not the provocateur, but that song is usually used like an excuse for kind of singers erotic teasing ability excercises. It's not that I have something against sex and erotism (god bless them !) - To me it's just a matter of defending intellectual/artistic honesty and fighting opportunists and toxic showbizz pseudo-artists.

Sketches of Spain still sounds great, surely in the top 100 20th century Lp's.

I have the Ian Carr biography of Miles, that if I recall was pretty good, but it's been a number of years since I read it.
Interesting to see your responses to different periods. I now like his electric period the most also, though many years ago I only liked his bebop/ cool jazz, especially " 'Round About Midnight". Saw him play in Chicago in '80 or '81 on the Man With The Horn Tour, when he seldom faced the audience! I was a tad underwhelmed by the show except for the fact that (like seeing the Stones in '78), hey, that's Miles f'ing Davis 50 feet away playing live!
By the way, I've wondered for a while if you dig the Yo' Miles! recordings or the Burnt Sugar collective out of NYC. I find them both usually very worthwhile.

Thanks I will keep crate digging for it, I prefer to shop this way for most of my used vinyl choices. Seems like I've seen most Miles except for that one. No one unloads an exceptional album in this case perhaps. Thanks again.
Boy, you are right about the history thing. Miles is so great because he hits so many moods. I like Bitch's, but want to hear his older stuff somemes. Milestones is good, but IREALLY love Sketches. The reason the writer might have said "but you don't have" because you showed off your original Sketches. No big deal, we collectors all do it. We are proud of our vinyl and how we love the music. In Stamford, CT we had a darn good jazz station that was such a blessing. Heard all sorts of music that I would have missed. Happy Thanksgiving. I really appreciate listening to you. Wish we could converse. We also had a major great local jazz music store called Sally's, which helped. She had many recommendations.

I think On The Corner is mistakenly given the short shrift from critics because it's improvisational rather than traditionally composed. I read a year or so back that Carlos Santana was making an album with some of the Bitches Brew musicians; hoping that comes to fruition.

What I can't stand "of Porgy and Bess", is not Porgy and Bess - I have not been overexposed to repetition like you were - but the thousands of female singers who sing "Summertime" like a cat in heat, making a sexually charged version of the song, completely missing the point. By the way, the same thing applies to "Fever", most versions have nothing to do with the feel of the original by Little Willie John, where he is the victim of desire, not the provocateur, but that song is usually used like an excuse for kind of singers erotic teasing ability excercises. It's not that I have something against sex and erotism (god bless them !) - To me it's just a matter of defending intellectual/artistic honesty and fighting opportunists and toxic showbizz pseudo-artists.
