Such a powerful cover of the original as to the song writer Reznor praised Cash's interpretation of the song for its "sincerity and meaning," going so far as to say "that song isn't mine anymore." The video was filmed in February 2003, Cash was 71 years old and had serious health problems. His frailty is clearly evident in the video. He died seven months later, on September 12; his wife, June Carter Cash, who is shown gazing at her husband in two sequences of the video, had died on May 15, only 3 months after filming this. The house where Cash's music video was shot, which was Cash's home for nearly 30 years, was destroyed in a fire on April 10, 2007. This cover is widely considered as one of his best works.
Thank you so much for all the great info! I knew some of it, and I can remember my dad listening to "The man in Black" from a child. He is Iconic and this was such a sad, but great performace- the video was so raw and real. He fought some demons for sure. June was a great singer too!
@@TheSpeakEasyLounge You’re most welcome! Yes the raw emotion exhibited in the performance gets me every time I see it. He sure had his demons as many stars, past and present, do. Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails wrote a song if the self-loathing an addict might go through on the way down that dark spiral that can lead to self destruction. Johnny took those words and changed only one but turned it into a regret-filled look back over their life of someone approaching death. The songs seem lijebtwo differnt songs yet are one (the word change: NIN sang about wearing a crown if shit upon a liar's chair, Johnny spoke of a crown of thorns upon the liar's chair).
The greatest country songwriter and singer Johnny Cash who made the greatest country song 'I walk the line' also did the best emotional cover song 'Hurt'.

johnny cash not died of a broken heart.....June Carter Cash, died on May 15, 2003. Johnny Cash died four months later (September 12) at the age of 71 at Baptist Hospital in Nashville from complications of diabetes.
Fortunately, all through Johnny Cash‘s life he knew of both the mercy and severity of God. He was a firm believer in that reality and the imagery he showed, as well as many of his other songs, testify that he knew of Christ’s redeeming grace and salvation, something that comes from no other source, regardless of how exclusive that sounds. That is an absolutely inescapable and essential part of both he and June’s life. We are not random bags of “Stardust“ banging around in the universe that has no purpose. “In the beginning God…“ Johnny is at peace now, because he always came back to that reality. Thanks for the really good reaction.
@@danalynch8889 Yes I believe you did as well. Nobody “picks them selves up by their bootstraps“ and chooses Christ, it is His saving grace that salvages us from ourselves. I believe he knows now that there’s never been a person born who was “good enough“ to merit heaven. Like the lyrics he and June sang many times, “Amazing grace how sweet the sound that saved a wretch like me!”
Johnny Cash was a sinner, and even in his faith he never forgot how easy it was to be one. He carried his faith with a compassion and humility that many modern American Christians would do well to emulate.
There is a vocal coach who knew Johnny and said that in her review and analysis of this. It was the first time I had heard this song and it impressed the hell out of me.
Actually not so, it was the producer of Cash's final album that reached out for permission to cover it because he felt Johnny could transform it. June hadn't passed away at the time, she is actually the female in the video. She shortly passed away after the music video and albums release, Johnny passed away about 8 months later.
I look at it like he's praying to God and really boldly confesses. It being close to the end of his life. He is saying he let people down and because of his selfish life. He knew he would continue to hurt them even after death. Leaving all kinds of emotional pain and scars. I think the Empire of Dirt says it best..He is leaving nothing that's worth nothing. @@TheSpeakEasyLounge There were no plans for June to be part of the video, she just happened to come down stairs to check on Johnny because she was concerned he was working too hard given his poor health. The film crew did an amazing job considering that they were rushed and had no solid plan for how they were going to make the video. They captured the theme of Johnny's message beautifully.

I don't use anything but OBS audio and my mic, which is connected to OBS and gives a clear sound. I can adjust the volume on my mic manually too. I don't know if that helps or not. I learned the best settings for OBS audio on a tutorial. Whenever you want to do discord, let me know and we can figure out the best time to get on, just you and I, I can share my screen. it's a free account.
