Johnny Hiland is a machine. Fortunately, he is just as nice of a guy in person as he is in all of his shows. Super humble and kind. That goes a long way with me even if he wasn't a killer player.
Mr. Hiland is a good friend if mine. 🐈⬛ We did some benefit gigs in Nashville for the blind back in 2017. He is a stellar picker and a super human being. 🇺🇲 I played rhythm guitar 🎸 for Johnny and ripped a few leads my damn self.

Johnny Highland on Guitar, Mr Don Kelly has Turned out the Finest Guitar players that ever came outa Nashville, my favorites are Brent Mason, JD Simo,Johnny Highland ,Daniel Donato,, Always great music from the DKB !!
Don playing lots of leads back then ……and definitely holding his own …… lots of old school Western swing in the set …… great stuff ……Joe & Luke have so much respect for Don …… as they keep the band going …
This is awesome footage! I think this is the oldest footage I can find on RUclips. And I agree joe and Luke are awesome and are keeping the don Kelly legacy alive. They are both monster players. I haven’t seen them yet but really want to the next time I’m in Nashville
This is a priceless video! This is 'REAL' country music! Robert's is my favorite place to go in all of Nashville. Hearing and seeing these guys 20+ years ago is a real treat. What a great band! Johnny Hiland was on fire. Don Kelly is awesome and I enjoyed hearing him pick guitar as well as sing. In my opinion, his show was and still is the best in Nashville! Drummer and Bass were great too!
Great band. Great vid. Of course familiar with Johnny's playing..have known of Don but have never seen any videos of him playing. I didn't know that he was such a good player himself! Thanks for posting!
Left to right. J Hiland (guitar) , A Alinikoff (drums) , D Kelley (band leader), R Lutrick (bass) . Status: Johnny (still pickin) , Artie (best drummer ever, retired), Don ( still going strong) , Ronnie (still at it). Make sure to check out John England and the Western Swingers if you happen by Roberts today, the legends live on in that room.
Watched this then read the comments: several want to show off product knowledge...B-Bender vs. Parsons-White. Nobody cares. Yes Johnny Hiland is a freak of nature. “The way country used to be”? Walk-in the Dog? Rufus Thomas has probably been called a lot of things, but country isn’t one of them. The bassist AND drummer can really sing. Don can REALLY play lead. These components are what enable a bar band to exist for years. Talk about the massive crowd. Must be 7:30 Tuesday night. Yes, it’s a shame these fellers ain’t multi millionaires. Commenters: comments should be about the artists, not your humble opinions. Nobody cares. Let’s all hope Don is loving retirement in Florida, that a new set of talented band mates keep Roberts boppin along. Nothing less.
Now that’s a band! I’ve heard of the Don Kelley Band for years; this is the first time I’ve heard them. Johnny Hiland is dynamite, the drummer and bass player are killer, and Don ain’t no slouch either. When I was living in Nashville in 1978, I’d have sold my soul to play with a band like this! These guys were the real deal.
I used to go to Nashville every year back around this same time and I heard Johnny Highland playing from down the street, I followed that sound and wound up in Roberts and got to see this very band. I met Johnny and Don and talked with them, and since then I've done my best to play this same type of lists at my gigs. thanks for sharing.
I always visited Robert's when I was in Nashville for the Fanfair from 1995 to 2000. My friends always knew where to look for me. I still miss days like this. I am sure a lot has changed since those days, but I would love to be back there one day
Cover bands in Australia take note and listen... then again, don't worry, it'll never happen ever ever, ever ever unfortunately. What a shame..! Thanks so much for posting...the audio is great considering 25 years!
Thanks for posting.....this is a real treasure.....Don Kelly a legend on the strip, Johnny Hiland one of the best pickers ever......don't know who the bass player or drummer are.........
It was my "once in a lifetime" visit to Nashville and just accidentaly sit in this bar. If the drummer is the same as on the demo CD, I've got then, his name should be Artie Alinikoff. And it made a good impression on me.
@@delfin101 You certainly picked a great night to capture this on video.........Guitar player Johnny Hiland is now well known as one of the very best in the world.......Don Kelly has some kind of weird genius talent for finding KILLER players........glad you posted this.....I sent a link to Johnny Hiland via Facebook......
That was awesome. Thank you for posting this. I was able to see Don Kelley when JD Simo played with him and have the CD with Johnny Hiland on it. This is the way country music is supposed to be. That stage was just oozing with tone and talent. It doesn’t get better than that!
LordJeebusCripes if you’re referring to Johnny’s blonde Tele, it looks to me to be a B bender. Either a Parsons White style (bender installed inside the body) or Hipshot Style (no routing required), hard to tell with the quality of the video. Maybe I’m missing what you’re talking about though. Does Johnny play another Tele in the video I missed? If so, give me the time stamp and I’ll try and tell you for sure 👌🏼
If you don't know how to do it, I'll show you how to RACE the dog! That's the only song I've heard before writing this & looking forward to the rest! Killer!
Hasn't Nashville always been about cosplaying country music and selling it to as many punters as possible, whilst people who can sell it make as much money off the artiste and songwriters, who hope to make as much as possible out of the musicians, before they give up?
@@alfsmith4936 you're not wrong. Since the beginning country music has been about playing the part. But now, Nashville's tourism industry is a lot different than it was when this video was taken. Don Kelly the secret wizard of guitar a cultivator of guitar legends
WOW! What a treasure. Johnny Hiland in the band. When Nashville was Nashville.
Is it possible to get DVD of this band with Johnny Hiland?
