    Definitely the best of the bunch unless you surprise me with some new ones. it's interesting to see how other people construct this method, I only read about it and put the face together in a different order. I also do the top of the ear to corner of mouth. my favourite method and video so far. great job!

      Honestly i saw different videos of ppl doing Reilly and for some reason no one agrees on the way to do it. Some ppl dont do the looping rhythm line just the lower helix line to the chin. Some dont do the large circle just the smaller ones. I tried to cover ALL the rhythm lines from all the ways other artists do it and combine them in one place. I still dont understand why its rarely demonstrated. I think one, Reilly didnt leave a book behind which is tragic. and two, ppl who uses this have the construction memorized by heart so they just do the whole thing mentally.
      As for surprises, There is one more method coming up which is the "Free Style" which actually surprised Me. From all the methods, free styling produced the closest result to the original reference that i used.
      Which makes sense since free styling is based on .. u know what? I''m gona explain why in the next video xD

    I find it odd that why I struggled with heads doing loomis metod I got this, albeit a complicated one to produce a more solid result. Even while observing people I tend to see their faces more clearly then when I used the method of just the circle and titling it.

  • @eXtremeGoLden

    Thank ypu for this great tutorial! Not only this - thanks for all your head tutorials! :) Maybe you can help me a little: Normally I draw the Loomies head (which I learned here on RUclips from Proko) - he divides the circle at the front view (looking straight on) first in 2 parts and then these 2 parts again in 3 parts. One third of the " 3 thirds" (hair line - brow line - nose line - chin line) is 2 of these parts long. Hope you understand, what I mean. :) At your drawing it looks that the 3 thirds are much longer. Which method do you use to find the length of these thirds? I tried to draw the Reilly Abstraction in a front view on a Loomies head construction, but it does´nt look like your head. :(

    • @SalemShanouha
      @SalemShanouha  7 лет назад

      Its basically the same method, Proko start with the circle, divide it into 2, then divides every part into 3 and then select the first third for the hair and the other one for the nose. Then he adds the same distance for the chin. I do the same thing, but i go directly to the thirds, while doing the 6 parts in my head, so i guesstimate the thirds and do them right away. If you check my loomis video, the reason why it looks long is not the measurements, its that i cut a bit too much when i did the cranium circles. I adjusted that later on by scaling the face horizontally.
      To put it in a simple way, draw a circle, divide in half to get your brow line, then from that line divide 2 thirds down one for the nose and one for the chin and one third up for the hair and you will have your correct measurements. Also divide the whole head in half to get the eyes line.
      Both Reilly's and loomis's methods have the same measurements, its just that Reilly's is more precise when it come to locking the features down by surrounding them with rhythm lines.
      Hope that helped if not, let me know :)

    Nice, does Frank Reilly only work with neutral faces or also with emotionally expressive faces? Do you have an example of the latter?

    • @SalemShanouha
      @SalemShanouha  7 лет назад +3

      For some reason i didnt get notification for your comment, but to answer ur question yes it works for any emotion as well since the basics are the same but you have to move the rhythm lines with the muscles since every emotion move the muscles in different directions. I cant seem to find an example out there, but its a good idea for a short video :)

    This looks very useful. How would you use this method to draw your own character without a model? Also with the head tilted?

    • @SalemShanouha
      @SalemShanouha  7 лет назад +1

      Ok for the tilted head you can check the last drawing in every chapter, the head is slightly tilted, it wont change the rhythm lines at all they will just tilt with the head. You can also watch the "using frank reilly's method for emotion" video i uploaded couple of weeks ago to see how you can adapt the method for any emotion.
      As for drawing your own character this method is the best. You can also check my medieval vampire portraits for that, some of them were done without reference. The reason why this is the best method is cause it locks the features in the face so well that you can simply draw the method without reference and all you have to do next is create your own features details in their correct place. So you wont have to worry about wrong measurements or features being tilted or one eye is bigger then the other. I use this along with loomis's method to draw characters from imagination.
      Try to draw the mask "the lines" first without looking at a reference, then fill in the details from your imagination and you will be surprised that you just created your own character without reference in a really easy way.
      Hope that helped :)

    What is the difference between woman and male faces when doing reilly's method?

    • @SalemShanouha
      @SalemShanouha  7 лет назад +1

      Method wise there are not difference in the rhythm lines themselves. The difference is in the head itself. See the male head is more rectangular and the female is more angular. The jaw is more squarish in the male and more round and narrow in the female. The brow line is more pronounced in the male and more smooth in the female and so on for the features. So the method itself will work for both genders but the detail layer on top of it will be different. You have to adjust the method accordingly afterward. The method is basically a first step for you to lock down the features in its rightful place. The differences between have to be in mind while drawing it.
      So for example dont draw the jaw as a square for a female when your drawing the initial head. So learn the differences between the genders first and then apply them to the rhythm lines after. Whatever you didnt catch in the initial lines you can adjust later on afterward.
      Hope that helped.

    Do u use wacom pad for digital painting? If so wat model do u use? ( Great Work! Awesome waiting for ur next tutorial)

    • @SalemShanouha
      @SalemShanouha  7 лет назад +2

      Thank you :)
      As for the pad its digital but sadly its not wacom. Its a toshiba portege m750 tablet pc i bought 8 years ago. A Laptop that i dont recommend to anyone lol. I just had to buy it back then coz wacom didnt have a dealer in my country back then. And now they do but the dealer for some reason decided to double the prices on all the wacom tablets. So the new 27HD tablet (2200$) in the US cost around 4500$ here. So im sticking with my crappy old lovely laptop for now :)

    • @moorek1967
      @moorek1967 7 лет назад

      Even with a low cost pen tablet, you can still do awesome things. Remember, paper and pencil is cheaper. That's how Reilly did it, on paper.
      Wacom doesn't sell Bamboo online anymore, it moved to Intuos and we can get the basic one for around $70 US at Staples and Best Buy. I saw Huion has a basic one online for about $50 US. My opinion is that if you can draw on a pen tablet then you should be able to draw on paper as well.
      The cost of any pen tablet does not make a difference if you don't have the motor skills developed.

      Actually I started in 2009 with just a pencil. I didnt even touch colors till 2012 when i started oil painting. I started digital painting in 2014, 5 years after I started drawing. I believe its essential for beginners to get the feel of the pencil first then go digital. I still do my initial sketching on my sketchbook first before going digital with it.
      The reason why 99% of my videos are digital (except Dean portrait) is that i dont have a good camera or a tripod to capture it. I had to do a home made tripod (by taping UPS batteries on top of each other then taping a glass frame on top and put the IPAD on top of them) to capture myself drawing. Its a lot of hassle. Maybe later if i can afford a good camera with a tripod i wont mind doing traditional videos even oil paintings. But for now Digital is much easier, i just have to make due with what i have now even if its not that good "due to low income even with a day job".
      Im hopeful nonetheless :)

      Salem Shanouha
      You are absolutely correct that beginners should start on paper then go digital.
      I like your tutorials in digital. I have severe Dyscalculia and mild Dyslexia, so drawing digitally shows me the proper ways of drawing lines that I might miss while drawing on paper.
      I also have MS and had a stroke, which I explained in a video on my channel. You can check it out. I had made it a shout out for Istebrak, another online instructor. But after watching yours, I will be plugging you as well.
      I understand what you are teaching, yesterday I almost accomplished a good drawing using the Reilly method by following you.
      When I was young, I could only do the profile really well but never got any feedback about planes.
      But the pen tablet can't make me better, only practice can do that.
      Good luck in the future for making tutorials, I appreciate what you have done so far.

      Thank you so much for the kind words, u never know if what you put out there is good till u hear it from your audience. I'm really impressed with your hard work and ability to keep on working on ur art with all the struggles your facing, Its inspiring to anyone out there to hear you talk about it and i really wish you all the best from the bottom of my heart.
      Im subscribed to Istebrak I love her work she is an amazing instructor and a great artist. I liked what you said about her in ur video, I just watched it. I hope you can try Loomis method again and if it didnt work out, try other methods till you feel one of them worked out for you the best. If you find drawing a construction is a bit difficult, try the free style method. Maybe it can be a good start to improve your motoring skills to then go on to construction shapes.
      I hope you keep updating ur channel about ur art progress. I believe with the hard work your doing, you will not only get over all the struggles your passing through but also become a great artist yourself and inspire a lot of people out there. Art can be better then all the medication and therapy out there. Believe in your self no matter what other people "even doctors" say and there will be nothing stopping you from achieving all your goals and dreams.
      i appreciate your comment thank you. I wish you all the best with your journey :)

    wow thanks for the tutorial. been using the loomis method, really simple compared to the reily method...

    • @SalemShanouha
      @SalemShanouha  7 лет назад

      Yup Reilly's is a bit more complicated then Loomis but trust me once u get the hang of it, u wont struggle with portraits afterward at all.
      Give them all a test ride and see what results you get from each method. For example, some ppl never tried Jack Hamm and got amazing results from trying it.

      do you have any book suggestions for drawing? things like portraits animals and stuff and how long have you been drawing

    • @SalemShanouha
      @SalemShanouha  7 лет назад +2

      For some reason ur previous questions just disappeared on my PC but still visible on the phone :
      - what i mean at 2:54 "last division" is the 3rd division between the nose and the chin. That area is divided into 3 thirds. 1- nose to the middle of the lips. 2- from the middle of the lips to the top of the chin. 3- the top of the chin to the bottom of the chin . So the 2nd circle is from the top of the nose ball to the beginning of the 3rd division Thats what i meant by the last division.
      - at 11:16 Its not a step, I moved the eye balls above the eye line by mistake, a mistake that I will fix later in the video. The eye balls center should be on the eye line not above it.
      As for books, the obvious ones are Andrew Loomis's books he kinda covered most drawing topics. Jack hamm has a great book about how to draw animals. Burne Hogarth book about cloths and wrinkles and another one about hands. I did finish most of these books by copying every drawing in it and reading every word.
      As for how long, I started drawing seriously in 1/6/2009. I took a decision to become an artist or die trying, First 6 months I practiced 12 hours a day. Then it went to 8 - 6 then 6-4 these days.
      I didnt start digital painting right away :
      2009 - 2012 Pencils only
      2012 - 2014 Oil Painting - Acrylic - water color..
      Mid 2014 went half Digital half traditional
      Mid 2015 fully digital.

      As for my recovery i have a doctor appointment tomorrow, the pain is at 20% of what it was a month ago thank God the meds he gave me worked out. But its not 100% yet i will have to see why tomorrow. Thanks for checking and lets hope this thing clears up for good :)
