LA County leases the Canadian Super Scooper aircraft and they're one of the most effective weapons in the fire fight. They're the yellow planes you see on TV dropping water. And yes, we have reciprocal agreements covering a wide area because no single jurisdiction can handle a disaster of this magnitude.

You're seeing only one neighborhood being devastated. You need to see arial views of the massive areas being affected by the fires. It's more than homes in residential areas like this one. There are business districts being destroyed. Many families have lost not only homes but businesses and jobs.. no place to live, no means of earning an income. There were as many as 6 fires burning at one point. Others may pop up at any time, at any place. This will takes years and years to recover from. Some areas may never recover.

For those wondering, they do have newish building codes in place mandating the use of a non-flammable roof and non-flammable siding (I've seen fiber-board and aluminum siding mentioned). However, these codes are only for new construction. All of the new construction to replace these neighborhoods will use the new building codes. This fire will likely cause more building code updates, much like how building fire safety was much improved after the San Francisco fire of 1906.

A friend of mine in Altadena lost his house, all his possessions, a classic car and his two cats. He tried to fight the fire with his hose and ended up having to go to the emergency room due to smoke inhalation and debris in his eyes. The heat was so intense it burned off his eyebrows and mustache. The fire spread so fast it went from a warning for the area to his house being ablaze in just 20 minutes. A couple days later he got one little bit of good news, he had another classic car that he moved out to the street and left the keys in it. A friend told him somehow it survived. There are thousands with similar stories and we're just learning of the worst of it now as they're going into the burned out neighborhoods with cadaver dogs. It's a tragedy beyond words.

@@karenthompson8038 It wasn't me, it was a friend of mine that lost everything. I agree that people should always leave. There's almost no way a garden hose can deliver enough water to make a difference. The heat is so intense the water immediately boils off and a few moments later the house bursts into flames. You'll hear about the occasional exception, but I'm guessing there were other reasons the house didn't burn in those situations besides being wetted down. One of the reasons people stay in their homes is all the false alarms we've gotten in SoCal over the years. People who have lived here a long time say they've survived other fire scares and they'll survive this one. But each fire is different and just because you got lucky in the past doesn't mean you'll be spared next time around. The bodies of those people are now being recovered. Being stubborn can have deadly consequences.

When the wind is this strong, it can force embers inside the walls of the house or building via the normal air vents.
In normal wind you might not even feel a draft, but at this level of power a building a long distance from the fire can go up if the wind gets embers inside the walls

perspective; one acre is about 43,000 s/f, or a bit more than 200 feet by 200 ft. A good size lot for a home. Maybe large enough for 2-4 houses. Or another number is close to 70 square miles burned. The entire island of Manhattan is a bit over 20 square miles.

The winds in the LA area tend to kick up every year where they blow out from the mountains into the ocean and sometimes these are HARD gusts have been measured in excess of 100-mph (160 kph) and can blow for hours (or days) ... normally, it's just the gusting winds and we get some debris and trees knocked down. But this particular year ... the gusts were especially bad and the trees knocked into power-lines (or the power lines themselves snapped from the transformers off the poles) resulting in sparks and fires. With winds blowing THAT hard ... the fires QUICKLY spread engulfing entire regions... the Pacific Palisades has been wiped off the map - hundreds of homes have been lost. Evacuation orders have been issued for dozens of regions (as it's not just ONE fire ... but close a half dozen or more scattered all over LA) ... some are accidental (power lines or other such incidents) ... others have been blamed on arsonists taking advantage of the situation and starting fires to add to the chaos.
Fire fighters from multiple neighboring states... Canada and Mexico and the Indigenous Tribal Nations have stepped up to assist (including multiple water-dropping tanker planes from Canada) ... I know lots of friends & co-workers who have fled to safer grounds and are praying that they still have a home to come back to.
We're all dreading that moment when our cell-phone will sound with an alarm telling us that we need to evacuate ... many of us have already packed "go-bags" with our important documents and enough clothing (medication & necessities) to bug-out if that call does come in. Thank you everyone for your prayers and concerns. Hopefully, we will get through this all. (I live less than 20 minutes from Altadena and can see the smoke from my front door)
Several fires have been fully contained - encircled and controlled - but a few of them are not and continue to burn wild.

It is literally like an atom bomb has gone off in this small little town. It's block after block after block, gone. And that's just Altadena. It's even worse towards LA. How do you replace 120 year old homes and 150 year old trees? Nothing will ever be the same. Encourage you to go on google maps and look at street view of Altadena, before they take it down. You can feel the dryness in the air. It is sad to see the devastation from these fires, thousands are now homeless and sadly many have lost their lives. In Pacific Palisades there was an old Boy Scouts of America camp called Camp Josepho where my son and I had camped many times. It was completely destroyed, with it, the cool looking old wooden dining hall that was a former aircraft hangar donated by Howard Hughes, of course this is only a material thing.

Cuz said the winds were 100 miles an hour when he left his house. Fire was a long way from him as he started gathering stuff and when he looked out the windows, just a few minutes later, it was at his house and roof was burning. He left with what he had.

The Santa Ana winds are constant. They were clocking (55-70 mph:: 88.5-112.65 kmph gusts). LA is not flat. It consists of many mountains, hills and valleys which cause the winds to do many weird and wild things. Sadly, the fire planes could not immediately get up in the air when the fires were first noticed because the WINDS were so strong. Today (January 13), the winds are expected to "pick up" (aka get almost as strong) as they were last week.

I read this today and wanted to share:
Mayor of Paradise reaches out to Altadena leader
    From CNN’s Stephanie Becker
A day after the devastating fire began sweeping through Altadena, California, Steve Crowder reached out to the town council chairperson.
Crowder knows what the city is facing.
He is Mayor of Paradise, California, where 95% of the town was destroyed in the Camp Fire six years ago and more than 80 people were killed.
Crowder lost his house, his business and his cars but not his hope.
He called Victoria Knapp to let her know she is not alone. He offered support and guidance to get through the myriad of problems he knows the community will face.
Elected to the Paradise city council two days before the Camp Fire, Crowder recalled surveying the town and thinking “It looked like a nuclear bomb went off. How the hell do you ever come back from this?”
He told Knapp, “Trust me, there will be light at the end of the tunnel, you will get there and if you keep that in mind it will make a whole lot of difference.”
Paradise’s population was about 26,000 the day of the fire. Today it is 11,000 and growing.
“We are by no means rebuilt, but we are way ahead of where everyone predicted. We knew it would be a 20-year rebuild.”
The Altadena fire is also personal for Crowder. His stepdaughter and her husband lost their home in the fire.
“She’s a strong girl,” he said, noting when his neighbors in Paradise heard about her house, 175 people reached out, with many offering help.

Californians helping to lift Californians! Two of the 5 family members I had who lost everything in Paradise chose to rebuild. The 3 others did not. My medical doctor rebuilt in Chico, he said he would never live in the mountains again after his house burned down while he was out of town. The scars of homes lost that day in 2018 on GoogleMaps is still heart breaking.....so much devastation. I am sure that the LA area will recover much faster than Paradise, mainly because of money, fame, population density, and the location.

It's almost impossible to put out a wildfire, most of the time you just have to let it run it's course
However the fires In california are extreme and is a extraordinary situation, the only reason why CA can somewhat Keep some of these fires under control. It's because of the millions of dollars of resources. California is investing to put out these fires, CA is getting firefighters from Canada, Mexico, Israel, Ukraine, and many states to deal with this

I was implying that whenever these horrible fires happen we call for change and politicians promise change but when the flames are out, we go back to our lives and we forget. Then when it ultimately happens again, we're all shocked and outraged. That's why I mentioned Maui and Paradise. The county was just as upset with those fires but nothing is being done to mitigate the damage. It's similar (but not the same) to school sh**tings and the demand for g*n control. We need to demand better from our leaders.

I am in California, and I have to agree with you on this one! It is because of WHERE it is burning, and WHO it is affecting!! There have been WAY more devastating and deadly fires in California, but because this one is hitting one of the wealthiest zipcode in the Nation, it is making national news. Just 5 months ago we lost more than 460,000 acres when a drunk drove his car into bone dry grass in our local Bidwell Park here in Chico. The fire, which was the 5th largest in Ca history, barely made a blimp on the news, even though several entire communities were completely wiped out. Not to mention the Camp Fire in 2018 that killed 85 people in one day, burned 95% of the town of Paradise and burned at a rate of 16 times faster than the Palisades fire. Power and money talks louder not only in the US but the entire world. I am so sorry for all you guys have had to suffer recently. I hope you recover quickly.

Wildfires are common in California except they’re usually in sparsely populated areas with a few people and few buildings. Mostly grass and bush, but these current fires happened in populated areas with lots of structures and homes.
What made it extremely worse were the hurricane force winds which were unusual. The winds helped spread the fires faster and further than they would have been otherwise.
In 1994, there was a horrible fire in Malibu. 31 years later, it happened again, but I think this time may have been worse than the last time.
In Malibu, there are beach homes and businesses on the west side of PCH (Pacific Coast Highway). The fire started on the east side of the freeway, but because the high winds fire and embers flew over to the other side of the freeway, setting the beach homes on fire.
Most but not all the fires started in mountainous areas with heavy brush and grass, but of course, embers and direct flames can be blown onto structures. Again, it was due to the unusually high winds.

As someone who was born and lived my entire life in an area of Los Angeles county I can say that wildfires are a fact of life almost every year in California. I cannot say anything about the different areas that have been affected by all of these various wildfires as I have no knowledge about the zoning regulations for those areas. I do know that 50 years ago there were certain areas about twenty or so miles away where the zoning regulations forbid the construction of any houses or other buildings as it was common for wildfires to occur in those areas. The only structures that were built in those areas back then were firehouses or fire stations that were fully staffed. They would deal with any wildfires that occurred in those areas. They would allow the wildfires to burn the vegetation but prevented it from spreading to any homes or other buildings. Unfortunately over the years the zoning regulations have changed and they started building houses and other structures in those areas. I know in a different wildfire that occurred several years ago a number of homes in that area were destroyed. I do not know if any of the people who lived there had rebuilt there or not or if they have been affected by any of these wildfires. The video you watched here was about just one neighborhood that has been affected by just one of these wildfires. From what I have learned from watching various news videos on RUclips there are several different neighborhoods in Los Angeles County that have been affected by these various wildfires. I know that there is a video on RUclips about various celebrities who have lost their homes in one of these recent wildfires. I would like to say that where I am at that I am perfectly safe and that there are no wildfires burning in my area. For health reasons I have not been outside in a few weeks because the air quality has been poor for people with certain health concerns. Looking out my closed windows these past few days I could never see any type of smoke or anything that showed there were any fires burning in Los Angeles.
