Jean Alexander was an amazing actor - never appreciated in her lifetime, yes - the writers were brilliant but her delivery was exceptional. Hilda (Jean) was a one off, bless her.
I am so glad to see these great episodes, I have tried to watch 2022 episodes and I can't, it is so depressing, crying every 10 minutes, I was the biggest fan. I couldn't wait for Sunday's tea and toast with the wife watching corrie. Now it has sadly gone to Shite!!
Back in the days when 'corrie street; was streets ahead of every other soap chock full of top class 'proper' actors unlike todays if they can string two words together saddos
And the only character who developed a serious drinking problem was Peter Barlow. All those years and just one lost weekend alcoholic. I suppose they are all alcoholics.
Kevin is not 12 years old, but a grown-up mechanic; why should the expectation be that he lives at home with his dad and stepmother? Daft story line ...
@@Redsleather Perhaps they were influenced by their 14yr old daughters. I was 14 in 1985 and I thought Kevin was wonderful. Now I wonder what the hell I was thinking. He's awful, and he sounds like Johnny Vegas, getting more and more shrill the more wound up he becomes.
Bill has known Elaine for literally a couple of weeks when they suddenly decide to get married, and then they actually get married a couple of weeks after that. He then leaves the business and home he's only recently set up to go and live somewhere else entirely! The whole storyline seems so rushed, and the fact that barely anyone seems surprised at what's happening is baffling. I can't stand whiney Kevin (Old Shouty, as I like to call him), but I can see his point in some ways! Really enjoying these old episodes - love Hilda and Bet, and Betty too...and Mike...
Peter Armitage (Bill) was taken on by Granada on the assumption the character would be years in the series, but the actor quit after a year, hence the quick exit
Very sad - the older you get the more aware you become of those who have died at a younger age than you - talented people with so much going for them - makes you think - makes you appreciate today
Jean Alexander's performance as Hilda here is beautiful. She's subtly changed as a character. No longer quite the nagging and gossiping shrew that she was. She's had the stuffing knocked out of her by Stan's death and seems to have somehow aged slightly and become more reflective. Her old life is gone and now she knows she needs to find another. There are still some flashes of the old Hilda though.
alexander jones Gordon should have got the job he is all man get it.? got it? Good but 2 years later Alec Gilroy became landlord of the rovers bet didn't do much when she had Alec to bail her out.
Many years ago when I was in my 20s I used to work as a catering assistant at UWIC and at first when I worked there I lived in lodgings in Penylan where they had a very spoilt Alsatian that lived there and then I moved into a bedsitting room in Roath where I lived for 15 years and left there back in 2015 so my circumstances back then were similar to Gloria's. The Edwardian parks in Penylan by the Roath Brook have saved my sanity during these hard times!
Hilda is great at detective work.. Not all is what it seems at number 13. She certainly tried her best to accommodate Henry. She is such a caring soul .
Ope ths is readabl,Wen he frst Arived thnk was late 83,seems settled bt miserabl/dificult to get on wiv ere,n percy seemed mor chirpy n cheerful in his early months on corrie
Betty ‘Ey, you’ve just missed your Vera. If you’d been here five minutes sooner, you’d’ W seen her.” Jack “Yes. That’s why I’m five minutes later.” 🤣🤣🤣
That's because they made Gail and the equally awful Sally friends Watching these old episodes for the first time, I never realised just how many scenes Gail and Dierdre shared in the 1970s and early 1980s I'm glad that Bet got the job at the Rovers Return. That Gordon is a puffed up snob
Years ago I worked in a call centre and a lad who worked there got sacked and he had pretended to his parents he was still working there by going out of the house but going into town and coming back at times when he usually came back from work all because he was too ashamed to admit the truth that the call centre had let him go.
The BBC mustn’t have believed their luck as they launched EastEnders as Coronation Street slumped. The press even nicknamed Coronation Street ‘DeadEnders’ at the time
All the residents of Coronation Street refer to their houses as "a little palace", at one time or another; or "uzz little palace", in the case of Ivy ...
I’m so glad Kevin went to his dads wedding and he stopped behaving like he as been doing,At the end of the day is father as got a new life so Kevin should be happy 😃 for him
I’ve been watching from year 77 and I’m still wondering if there’s any glass in the windows of the office that looks over the sewing machines. There’s no difference if the door is open or closed It’s the little things Lol
Pauline corrriea i like frank he had good sense of humour and he knew to how to charm to he ladies. it must be that fine moustaches is the attraction in my book up frank..
Has anyone seen Tracy in the past year or so. Perhaps she was shut away wherever they stuck Rosie and Sophie in later years. Hope they remembered to feed them
The child actress family left Manchester (where it was shot) without giving the show any notice in 1984. As the show was already very turbulent at the time, they decided to leave Tracy unseen for some time to allow the audience to better accept a new Tracy.
Elsie's house is doomed her daughter didn't work and was writen out, Bill Webster writen out and than the claytons, I think Elsie's spirit allowed Liz too live there cause she was a big a t^^t as her haha
Nice to see Gloria start. Bet wont be too impressed will she! Nothing like a bitnof competion. Lol. Frank is very nautghty indeed. He sure thinks hes a gift from God. 🤣
So Shirley WASNT the first person Alf told he’d decided not to let the flat out anymore-Kevin was! It’s widely said he was being racist with Shirley-but not if he said the same thing to Kevin first!
It was a nice cheap and filling meal in the 80s. I wish it wasn't so expensive now. I miss fish and chips, but at nearly £15 a time, it's just not doable.
No Kevin-if you’ve suddenly decided you should be at your dad’s wedding, you don’t push past people on the stairs! What if you’d sent Percy flying? That would’ve ruined the wedding-Elaine’s uncle ending up in hospital!
Jean Alexander was an amazing actor - never appreciated in her lifetime, yes - the writers were brilliant but her delivery was exceptional. Hilda (Jean) was a one off, bless her.
Hilda was pure gold
frank was pure gold especially with that thick moustache he is quite distinctive .as for Hilda she is gold platinum
This show is nothing without Hilda.,
what a fabulous actress
Hilda is certainly one in a million
HILDA IS CERTAINLY ONE ☝️ IN A MILLION GLORY SENGO.
She’s absolutely adorable ❤️

Bets face when they told her she had the job was smashing.
I was also waiting for that. Very exciting for her and to see her reaction..
57:10 that's Liverpool St in Salford, the "registry office" has been demolished but the pub on the opposite side is still there.
That was lovely for Bet getting the managers job!
that job should have being Gordon's no question about it.?
@@MultiKs22No?
Hilda best actress by far shes was absolutely amazing
Blimey, after so many years of classic characters, 1985 did bring in so many forgettable, dull characters.
True enough, 1985 was a horrible year in general .
The Rovers Return: the only pub where people drink lots but never go to the bathroom!
And the only character who developed a serious drinking problem was Peter Barlow. All those years and just one lost weekend alcoholic. I suppose they are all alcoholics.
You see the Dartboard!! 🫣
Never fart or swear
Kevin is not 12 years old, but a grown-up mechanic; why should the expectation be that he lives at home with his dad and stepmother? Daft story line ...
That what I thought. He has a job and his mates so why should he uproot his whole life to keep everyone else happy?
Yes... but he keeps crying that his Dad is splitting up the family. He's acting like a 12 year old.
Kevin is awful... they should be glad to move away from the thick, shouty yob...
Even more baffling is why Granada bosses thought Kevin had a future as a character!

Its really sad that the actress who played Elaine (Judy Gridley) would die just two years later.
Point is nothing is guaranteed to anyone in life!
Its about making the most of every day you have!
Really?! Aww that is terrible

Oh that's very sad....
Kevin don’t be SCHOOPID. ITS PRONOUNCED S-T-U-P-I-D. NOT SCHOOPID ..
Love how Percy immediately changed tack from telling Ken, Alf and Brian about the dance the second he saw Phyllis walk in! 😂😂

I wish Kevin had gone to Southampton ... and kept walking right off the dock.

Bill and Elaine got married after a 10 minute conversation
They needed a quick exit for Bill as the actor quit after only a year unexpectedly
Never known a property sale go through that fast….one episode Kevin’s in the cabin saying someone’s interested, next episode they’re moving in! 😂
Bet paraphrasing Gordon from what he said when he returned. ‘Make no mistake-I am in charge. Get it? Got it? Good.’

The ginger cat in the introduction is my favourite.

Deirdre ( about Henry Wakefield) ‘This fella’s not a male version of Bet Lynch, is he?’ 😂😂😂😂😂

What did he do for eight hours every day???
Hilda’s carpet is beautiful!
Bit of a stale year 1985 was for Corrie after the collapse of the classic era in 1983-84.
The BBC mustn’t have believed their luck as they launched EastEnders as Coronation Street slumped. The press even nicknamed Coronation Street ‘DeadEnders’ at the time
They were ALL stale years after the 70s ended and Ray Langton left.

What new bride, in a new home, would want shouty Kevin to live with them?
Brian reminds me of Andy Gibb.
OMG ! Me too, the image!!!
Martin Platt. Did he ever remove that gormless look on his face?

2:44:17 it’s Connie Carlsberg and the dullest family on Coronation Street to date, thankfully they don’t last
I didn't like the Clayton's either!
They were awful.
Yes they were rubbish - the dad might have been alright in another role - with a decent haircut and clothes
Frank really looks like a naughty little boy when Betty’s telling him off. Could be the moustache 😅😅
He was on one of my favourite films- The Long Good Friday
The only characters who left in the previous 12 - 18 months and were truly missed are Stan and Eddie
What about Bert Tilsley? Albert Tatlock? Elsie Tanner?
Definitely Elsie Tanner also

Dreadful character and dreadful person in real life too
Agreed. Average actor, dull character, allowed to stay decades too long
And Gail
Well they weren’t in it long were they no wonder I didn’t remember them.
Betty is so naive!!!
People you know do selfish things Betty, grow up and wrap your mind around it.
