A couple of things you could use the soap for: 1) Shower with it and walk around smelling like fried chicken. 2) use it to wash your cast iron. :-) BTW: If you have used fat that solidifies after use like lard or shortening heat it, mix it uncooked oatmeal and use it for a winter time feeder.
You just discovered my "cold press" method of making my own soap. But I don't use "used" oil due to the odors it will produce. I haven't bought soap for over 30 years now.
You could take it to a auto parts store and dispose of it there, you could find a resturant that would take it from you and you could use it in some kinds of heaters.
I use wire strainers & coffee filters to "clean the particulates out, then put into a bottle/jar for reuse. Putting it in the fridge will keep it good for quite a few frys.
If you follow the instructions for making "biodiesel", the by products are biofuel (aka "biodiesel") and glycerin. The biofuel is safe enough that you can pour it onto a lawn. The glycerin can be used to make soap
You are a good man,, Eric most people would just dump it in the toilet,, .My grandmother used to make snapback in. The old country.. Keep in mind I'm gonna be 70 soon !!! Thank you FRANK FROM MONTANA..PS.... Yeah, I just dump my old cooking oil in the toilet. I like this method. Just flush it away and it is gone forever. Yayyyy!! I am 102 years old. My grandmother taught me this and still flushes hers down the toilet. No problems at all. So what if it's illegal, the grease police around here seem to be cool with it. They do it too...shhhh, don't tell anyone or we'll all get arrested. Cool popo is the best popo! PS....Used motor oil down the toilet works too! It's all good. Pease out yo a good man,, thank you. thank you again.
Put the used oil into that 5-gallon bucket until it is nearly full. Then take it to be recycled (for example: restaurants have grease containers that are collected for recycling, transfer stations have collection containers, etc). Keep your lye for your lye tank.
I'm a little confused. Doesn't garbage set out for pick-up go to the landfill? Are you saying that this method saves YOU making a trip to the landfill? As in, you would normally take it there yourself if the oil were liquid? Just trying to understand. Very cool experiment.
I think the idea is sending it to the landfill is better than dumping it in the sewers...and, personally more important, not clogging the drains and pipes in my home.
Oh, I understand that entirely. I figured that was the whole point. But in the video at t=3:54, you said, "then we should be able to put this out in the garbage instead of taking it to a landfill." That's why I was confused. I understand not putting it down the drain. Just the differentiation between putting it in the garbage versus taking it to the landfill was confusing.

Meanwhile in Kentucky.... (Perhaps there is a safety warning that should go at the beginning of this video?) Three people were severely injured and one person was killed in an explosion on 2nd Street in Guthrie Wednesday afternoon. Guthrie Police Chief Dean Blumel says three people were severely injured in an explosion at Quick Turn Anodizing on 2nd Street. Blumel says *someone was offloading cooking oil when an explosion happened that is believed to have been caused by some lye.* Two people were reportedly transported by ambulance to Tennova Healthcare in Clarksville and a fourth person was flown to a Nashville hospital. Todd County Coroner Timothy Wells confirmed at least one person was killed in the explosion. The road was blocked off as hazmat, officials with the EPA and other investigators worked to clear the area and investigate what happened. Quick Turn Anodizing specializes in custom Aluminum Anodizing to include Type IC, II Sulfuric Acid & Type III Hard Coat Anodizing to include both Clear and Color Classes.
That’s very tragic, though it is interesting. I have to say I am skeptical of the idea that cooking oil plus lye would produce an explosive reaction. That simply because lye doesn’t work that way. It does produce heat when water is added to lye but not enough to explode. On the other hand, aluminum does react with lye and produces hydrogen gas, which is indeed flammable and explosive. Even then, the explosion is not instantaneous. Also, the news story notes that the explosion is still under investigation. So, we can only wait and see what the outcome of the investigation says. www.certified-lye.com/safety.html
Jeezus.....use olive oil to cook with and it makes pure soap. This soap is amazing on your hair. This soap contains all the natural glycerin that your commercial soaps remove. I remember helping my Grandmother make soap with rendered hog fat and lye. My job was to keep an even fire under the washpot full of soap.' You should be using an impeller or pressed oil. Your "cooking oil" is soy bean oil that has been leached out of the soy pulp with zylene. A paint thinner that you can buy at Home Depot. Then the xylene is boiled off, leaving "cooking oil".. Use it on your pets, their coats will glisten. And if they have dry skin or other skin problems, this soap will heal the skin and stop the itching. I used to give my oil to a neighbor, who make artisan soap our of it and sold it for $5.00 a bar.
Use the oil again to deep fry potato wedges or we call them tater wedges, the potatoes will help clean the particles out & make the wedges taste great too😂
Put it out in the garbage...instead of taking it to a landfill??? Same thing. Oil+Plastic bucket+Lye=money+extra garbage!! SMDH Pour the oil in your yard.
oil is what, $12/gallon? my little secret, i just pour it in a plastic container with a snap lid and freeze it. i reuse it about a dozen times, then toss the frozen container tied in a plastic bag in the trash when the truck is coming so it's stays frozen. also some people burn it in their cars for fuel. biodiesel. find someone like that and he'll pick it up when you are ready. if i had to go through an extensive process to discard it, i would just stop deep frying, considering how much it costs in the first place.
