  • Updated 2022/08/11 Shows how to replace or install the rear windshield wiper refill or insert instead of replacing the entire blade. We have 3 videos showing 3 different methods to replace the wiper refill.
    For method 1, just bow the wiper refill out until it clears the end claw. Watch the video for details. • Rear Wiper Rubber Inse...
    For method 2, just snap the wiper blade apart. Only works for most plastic wiper blades. Watch the video for details. • How To Replace Rear Wi...
    For method 3, just cut the end tab off. Then the blade is more like the front wiper blades. Watch the video for details. • How To Replace Rear Wi...
    Don't throw the entire blade into the landfill. Just replace the rubber. In the uk they call a windshield a windscreen.
    I like cutting off the tab the best because once you break off the tab, it's easier to replace the rubber each year with very little effort.
    On most cars/trucks with a covered wiper arm, just turn the key off when the wiper is in the middle of the window to make it easy to work on the blade. There are at least 3 different wiper claw profiles. (6mm square, 7mm trapezoidal, 8mm square). There may be more. Buying just the insert or refill is the cheapest way to go. If you can't find a refill, you can buy a cheap front wiper and swap the rubber, as long as the profiles are the same.
    Tricoproducts.com makes the break-to-fit wiper refills that are/were in some auto parts stores. You may have to ask for them at the counter.
    Some refills do have retaining ends. Usually only at one end. Sometimes in the metal ribs/slats, sometimes built into the rubber. Put the retaining end closest to the pivot point of the arm (the motor end). Cut the opposite end off.
    Some rear wiper blades (not inserts) have a tab built into each end that keeps the insert from slipping out. If you have to break one of them to replace the insert, break the one closest to the pivot point (the motor end). The tab on the far end will keep the insert from slipping out.
    Update 2015/03/25: I went to Advance Auto Parts today and they told me they don't carry the break to fit wipers anymore. But, I did a search on ebay and found just the rubber, You can get 2 of them 24 inches long for about $2. They only come in the 6mm width for now but maybe we'll see the 8mm one day.

    It looks a bit cumbersome to get the rubber inserts to slide through the claws. Would adding some lubrication make it easier? A bit of soapy water would make it slippery but would still rinse off easily when you're done. I just replaced the entire blade on my car, but will try just the refill next time.

    • @fixpro256
      @fixpro256  6 лет назад

      It is a little difficult the first few times you do it. Soap makes it go in the claws easier but it also makes the rubber hard to hold onto ;-) It is a tradeoff between time, convenience, money, and feeling a little better about keeping crap out of the landfill. If you only do one car or truck a year, it may not be worth it to you. I end up doing 3 or 4 a year so it is worth the effort for me.

    The challenge I have is to ID the rubber to buy online. They have different width? Mine is off a 2005 mini cooper rear wiper. It measures 6.8mm. Also, can all rubbers be cut to length? It seems some has closed end.

    • @fixpro256
      @fixpro256  4 года назад

      There are at least 3 different wiper claw profiles. (6mm square, 7mm trapezoidal, 8mm square). There may be more.
      Tricoproducts.com makes the break-to-fit wiper refills that are/were in some auto parts stores. You may have to ask for them at the counter.
      Some do have retaining ends. Usually only at one end.
      Sometimes in the metal ribs/slats, sometimes built into the rubber. Put the retaining end closest to the pivot point of the arm (not the pivot of the blade). Cut the opposite end off.
      Some rear wiper blade (not insert) designs have a tab built into each end that keeps the insert from slipping out. If you have to break one of them to replace the insert, break the one closest to the pivot point. The tab on the far end will keep the insert from slipping out.

    If I might add, I spray silicone and it slides through like crap thru a goose, but, if you do it dry and you miss a grove I just use a flat screwdriver (very small) to just push the rubber under the plastic lip ... Aloha!

    • @fixpro256
      @fixpro256  Месяц назад +1

      God idea. Most of the silicones are ok. A few might have petroleum based solvents in them that may cause problems with rubber. A tad of dish soap in water may be safer.
