    At this point Latherman should just add the option for custom tool sets from the factory for a couple of models. Maybe for a bit of a price premium. They could easily set up the infrastructure to do it since they already have experience from the custom print tools and the repair department. It wouldn't be much of a stretch to have a department assembling multitools with made to order tool sets.

  • @survivalofthefittest409
    @survivalofthefittest409 3 года назад +4

    I really like the idea about moving the serrated blade. Hadn't thought about that one before. What I would really like to see, is for them to do away with the tiny eyeglass screwdriver, and just make that bit fit the regular size flatbits, which is completely doable, I've seen people mod it that way a lot, and then stick in all right there in its place.
    As far as the package opener goes, they could put a little notch right there in the top side of the big Flathead driver, thus keeping the driver and making another use of it kind of like the can opener does.
    Then give us a 154cm blade, a black oxide / coyote finish, and that thing would be absolutely banging!!! I would definitely pay a few extra bucks for that.
    I'm one of those people that thought I would never use those tiny scissors, or any scissors, really, on a multi-tool, but I was very pleasantly surprised how much I actually do use them, and if I'm being honest, I use them most of the time on my beard lol, so some bigger outside ones, like the free series, would be absolutely fantastic, and keeping the saw, file, signage blade on the outside, and a smaller serrated on the inside, cuz the serrated I also was pleasantly surprised how much I use, especially that flat end portion, that works well on making incision cuts on whatever.
    I'm one of those few people that really does not care for the charge series, I like the aesthetics of the wave better, and would like to see it upgraded before anything else, and I think doing variants of the wave is wiser, like you said, then just making a bunch of changes to it and keeping it the only way.
    Great video though, it's got me thinking!

      So, I'm working on some things in my head for the Wave+. I'm trying to figure out how I can add 91mm SAK scissors to the outside and make it look professional. Then I want to add in either the Sidekick serrated blade of the Rebar awl in place of the scissors. Haven't decided which would be best. Finally, I want to remove the eyeglass driver for a Rebar medium driver that I will shorten a bit and grind into a Wingman style package opener. Trying to work in out in my head to see if I can do it where it will both function and look nice.

    I would take the straight knife out of my Wave before I took out the serrated knife, given that carry my Wave along with a dedicated knife (usually an Ontario Knife Company Rat Model 2, sometimes a Spyderco Delica. or sometimes a boxcutter). I also think that the dedicated flat driver on the Wave could be ground into a workable awl. I think its a bit redundant with the bit exchanger anyway.

Then modify T-shank bits for any purpose - a file, a package cutter, a longer saw blade and make an eyeglass bit for those rare occasions when one is needed - it would be acceptible because eyeglass bits don't need a lot of torque. Possibly something like this showcasing some mods if you end up doing this

    Video begins at 3:08. But then, wait I’ll take apart a bunch of other expensive tools so they become less effective. I don’t see mods here, I see good ideas. Maybe you can get on a Leatherman design team.

    A good blade makes a serrated blade superfluous.

    Idk what they were thinking with the free series tools. Ease of access is really cool, BUT the microscopic ruler and file make no sense, and just making flat tips to tools does NOT make them a screwdriver.

      I have. I’m curious about them, but the modular tooling looks a bit bulky to me.

    I think Leatherman should recreate the wood or metal saw with a package opener on the tip.

    side note: I wish they offered the Free K2 in 154CM or S30V. Such a beautiful design, but 80 bucks is way too much for a knife in 420HC. I don't mind my Wave blade being in a low-end steel (its mostly a backup for me anyway, as far as cutting goes), but for a product that's mainly a knife its just not a sufficient material at that price point. Every random knife-selling fool on kickstarter uses D2 now, there's no reason for Leatherman to be sticking to 420HC for that area of their product lineup.

      I agree. I would love to see the K series in a better blade steel.

    Ehhh I never use multitool scissors on anything but my nails. Ever try to break down a box that construction material came in with scissors? Yeah... No. You use a blade. I can't imagine getting rid of the very decent serrated blade on the wave for a chincy pair of scissors. The blade is sharp as hell, you can draw cut with itand it has some stability to it. And I like the saw on the wave because I can use the diamond side to sharpen other knives, drill bits all sorts of stuff. The thing I wish they would do is stop with the stupid proprietary bits. So 100 on the tool, another 30 for the bit kit and another 25-30 for one of the extentions. I have a Dewalt set of bits with several extentions and like 30 bits I got for something like 25$ on sale. All I need to do is get an RAE gear sheath, some rubber strip bit holders and then epoxy some 5$ neodymium magnets to said strips. Stick the strips on slither side of the sheath and blamo. Done. I am going to try and grind one of my standard extension into one that will fit my wave.

    I think they would have been well served to make customization easier at the factory at least so customers could build their own on the website. I know to some extent this type of thing exists for some knife companies and it just seems like a no-brainer for multitools. Maybe it's a manufacturing nightmare, I don't know, but it seems like something very profitable to figure out. If I could effectively build my own tool on the website with things I chose to put in it even if from a list of things specific for that tool, take my money! lol And for Heaven's sake let me build it without a can or bottle opener or lanyard loop!

    • @txtoolcrib
      @txtoolcrib 3 года назад

      I wish I had some answers for you, I don't. The only thing I can think of is that if a customer has their perfect multi tool, then they have no reason to buy the latest and greatest. That hurt their bottom line.

    I don't get why he keeps harping on the fabulosity of the package opener... It is wasted space on a unitasker. I mean seriously, there are big fat knives on these multitools that open packages fantastically... But even if you wanted a safer option for idk... reasons... the can opener does it just as well as the package opener.

    I agree with what everyone is saying about a custom toolset builder for Leatherman, but, it's never gonna happen. They would never be able to keep up with orders, and they know that, which is why they haven't done it.
