I’ll never forget what my grandpa said once while we were fishing, about 40 years ago. I don’t know if he was even speaking to me directly, he could have just been talking to himself... But he said, “when your fishing from the bank, you try your hardest to cast as far off shore as possible, but when your on a boat, you try your best to cast as close to the shore as possible”. There is definitely something to that. Lol...
For years as a competitive angler in big name circuits in the 80’ and 90’s I always kept a log book for each lake I fished. After I burned out and didn’t buy a fishing license for almost 20 years. When I retired and moved to Florida I decided to fish again and thought I would make my log via video. I decided to load those videos to RUclips for storage of videos and people started watching. Gathering viewers was not and is not my intent but it’s now become a fun way to expand on my love for bass fishing. I’ve met a few of my followers, some have gone fishing with me and it’s fun when guys at boat ramp say, “hey I watch your videos” It’s just become an expansion of my joy on the water and if it helps others with their fishing it’s a good thing. Just subscribed to you
Welcome back to fishing after taking a break. I subscribed back to you as well. I’m sure I can gain knowledge through your videos and years of experience. Keeping it all in fun is important and I agree I think helping others is key. Thanks for the follow, cheers!
Outdoor fishing themed videos are not about catching fish. They are about the process of fishing and eventually catching. The catching will come when it is time. Focus on the process of fishing and the process of making entertaining videos. Y'all keep it up and have fun while you are young. 👍🇺🇸
Really needed to hear this , I bought my dji this past weekend and got my first fishing footage today , now I’m just stressed on how to start . But I realize I can’t be stressed about it just gota sacrifice some sleep , to edit a little but just gota let it flow and see how things come out .
That's really what its all about. Just have fun with it and it will happen. The hardest thing is to just keep going. Its taken us a year and 150 videos to get where we are today and we’re still going up. You got this.
interesting side of you tube. Us small channels needs to keep at it. it's hard and it seems you tube hates us but if you enjoy what you do. it is worth the work.
I agree it seems the bigger channels I watch sold out. And this channel has shaped the future for me. Even if it tanks I at lease get enjoyment from making the cideos
Just started my channel Jighead Jones no content yet just one short to test out uploading process. I have no background or clue on how to do the editing stuff but I'm hoping I pick up on it and figure it out. My hardest part is figuring out the best resolution to film in. Im going to transfer videos from my phone to pc to try editing Just going to start with my phone and content on what I know, mostly panfish, catfish, and bass fishing.
Its a start brother. A easy starting place is 1080p 60fps or if your phone can 4k 60fps. That allows you to slow the video down for slow mo if you want. However 30fps is more appealing to the human eye. But you can always render down from 60fps. But you can't render up from 30fps. Hope that helps
We're on year three with our outdoor channel. Getting big is not our focus. We're just having fun making videos and showing folks that outdoor adventures are attainable for everyone. We've made all these mistakes ourselves and we're discovering new mistakes with every video we post. Now that we've been posting a while and are now comfortable with the entire process, our main focus is to improve the production quality. We'll see how that goes.
That’s honestly the best way to go. You got a new subscriber from me. From what I saw on your videos, you have the editing principles down. I would say just a lil color correction would bring your video quality up a quite a bit. That was one of the major changes we did from our first few videos and it made a huge difference. What editing software do you use?
@thebraveangler color grading is next on my list of "learn how". I'm using DaVinci Resolve 18. I had tried a couple of others early, but settled on Resolve. Tons of capability for a free program.
good information man! thanks for the advice. i just started out and i’ve been watching video after video trying to learn and see what i need to do gain traction. cheers!
I revamped my channel to be a fishing and outdoors channel doing what I love and showing where I grew up...My main thing will be getting over being on camera and talking/thinking of what to say, etc.
I think that’s what is so great about fishing or the outdoors. As a police officer it’s the way I destress and what I have learned from a lot of the community, it’s the same for them. So even just talking about your life while fishing, people relate. I can say that my channel has grown quickly since I started being more transparent about my life and just being myself.
Hey man, I love the honesty. I've been researching starting up a fishing channel lately and looking at a GoPro to buy later on this year. These are all things you said run through my head along with others too. From another brother in blue I know how you feel about being yourself on camera because when you are at work you are a robot. You do you. Stay safe brother and after I post my first video on my new channel I'll hit you up with another sub 😂!
Thanks brother, the best thing you can do is start. Check out my video in the road to the pros it’s called if you wanna go pro you have to do this. In that video I show how to set up your RUclips to be searchable and what I have learned about building a brand and getting views on RUclips.
Yo brother i'm from Polynesia, Tahiti, i also made my fishing channel , we do exotic kayak fishing, it's all fun brother, i love every part of the making! i did subscribe to your channel bro , good luck in your quest brother! Peace and love from Tahiti
Great video. Sent it to my son who’s just starting a fishing channel. Catchin Dream Fish. 🐠 It’s definitely harder than most think. I just retired after 34 years in law enforcement. Stay safe Brother
Well hey, thank you for your service. I’ve been doing it a few years now and couldn’t imagine doing it for 30+ years. Tell your son to shoot me a comment and I’ll subscribe to his channel.
Shoot man you're doing good. 300 plus subscribers is awesome. I'm at 100 and having fun. I just fish for fun and have a gopro so I started a channel. Good fun all around. I found if I get too concerned about the videos that the fun of fishing suffers.
I agree entirely! When we made that video we had 40 subs. And since we changed our mindset, things have progressed. And better than anything, the community that was born out of this channel has become interactive and supportive. The reason I made the video to prevent new RUclipss from going down that road and just have fun with it. And you can make that 101 subscribers now:)
Awesome man. Yeah best thing is to keep it real and let nature take its course. I figure eventually it will come around but meanwhile we gotta hook them bass! Lol
I make general outdoor content because I am a very complex outdoorsman. I couldnt focus solely on fishing if I tried because its not who I am. One of my top videos on making venison bologna was filmed entirely on an Android. Gear wise, i can get some beautiful footage but the sad reality is that its for me because no one cares. Had to come to the realization that all the extra stuff I do on video and quality will never trump a story or topic people want to see.
Its one of the hardest things to figure out. We are still learning how to storytell through our videos. Often our favorite videos don't get attention but we enjoy making them regardless
Another great video about what to expect and how it goes, I keep finding myself saying I need this camera, this accessory etc. Realty is I was filming my fishing trips with my iPhone the whole time I have been fishing. I do like the hands free of the GoPro and the voice control though. Like you I work 40+ a week finding the time to edit and make content when I can. I started mine a little over a week ago, hopefully by 2025 I can have 2k subscribers like you and make a similar video :) Keep up the good work. I look forward to seeing more.
Funny thing is we filmed that when we had 40 subscribers. It was a struggle posting consistently for the first 6 months without seeing growth. But around the 8 month we gained 1500 subscribers. If you stick with it you will definitely get there
