Thanks for the trip down memory lane. I used to own the 9000ES matching amp/pre-amp combo. Used them for a decade and then sold them for the same price I bought them for. I asked the guy who bought them off me why he wanted them and he said because he was an audio engineer for a major TV/Radio network and knew how good they were. No arguing over the price, just came and picked them up with a big smile on his face. I've been slumming it since.
BTL = Beast Mode! Ode to Sony ES. Where have you gone. This system brought big theater joy for so many at under $2k. Use it in 2 channel. What Sony was? Remember they made this pair for people to afford and to enjoy. Please don't make light of its brother the Sony TA 9000ES who brought the world of "separates" to some many people that thought we need a huge hulking receiver. And for many of us set us on the path of "separates" on our audiophile journey. The processor was the first to use Analog Devices DSP 32 bit design SHARC processor. Imagine if they had kept this product line going where we would be. XLR outputs and Atmos processing. Rob Brennan from Sony if you are listening. Bring back the ES multichannel separates.
Sony da4es is a good receiver, probably one of the best it will run 4 channels in stereo with basically zero distortion at 8 ohm or 4ohm the amplifier layout is very similar but uses standard transistor packages so replacement of parts is easy
Like you I have collected a bunch of amplifiers, all from Yamaha including a P2200, PC2002m, M50 and a MX-1. Can't get myself to get rid of any of them.😄
I still own this and the preamp. The preamp was one of the the first all digital processing. It was good for home theater but lack somewhat for critical audio listening. The sound was not the most transparent or detailed.
Thank you for your reply. The one I have seems to run about the same idle pull on the mains. Thanks again. The analog pre amp that pairs with this seems rather odd, very sensitive line level inputs and no phono amp, the digital pre has that.
huh.. i dont think that power cable is factory fitted. Acrotec i believe is now Acrolink and none of their product is cheap! --- that near clip output looks bad!. i wonder if there's something wrong or just flawed design?
Keep in mind that was a single probe measurement so artefacts can be present. Cannot ground it in BTL mode. Not sure what it is but just looks like severe distortion. It is so far beyond its rated specifications that I’m happy to give it a pass… No idea if the cord is stock but the stock strain relief seems sized for that cord diameter.

Very underrated units!
The days of copper plated chassis. Beautiful!
Tengo este amplificador conectado a un pre Sony TA-E80ES y es increíble el sonido y la potencia que es capaz de entregar sin sacrificar temperatura
Thanks for this, the build & design of this beast sure looks impressive.

Yamaha MX-1 is on my radar!

Yeh you need the TA-P9000ES which is all analogue :)
Slanting heatsinks keeps the overall dimensions the same. However it allows for more fin surface area.
heavy duty amp, well built 👍🏻
i had it in 2009 its all bluff sold it and got a cambridge integrated cxa80 amp that sounds much much musical than that

Yes! That analogue preamp is the one to have also, much rarer though and I don't see them often...
One pre amp on ebay for $1500
The amp for $1250
Fair prices?
I have the same power amp and it needs repairing, can I ask what happened to yours that it needed repairing?
I believe someone tried to adjust the bias without setting the correct impedance on the back per the service manual procedure
I think the plates are lose in the transformer. It sound like it.
I would not poke with my fingers around in there when not being shure of every cap has been discharged.
