I used to shop at Circuit City and HH Gregg when I lived in Orlando, FL. I loved the customer service in both stores. It was amazing that Circuit City would actually install their car stereos on site,
That’s a great suggestion. I’ll have to do a Part 2 that would feature (Radio Shack, Wolf Camera and etc. ) This mostly consisted of the Big Box stores.
I had a speaker installed in my 1989 Chrysler New Yorker in 2003 at Tweeters, excellent customer service,,they had a mini theater in the back where you could watch movies while they worked on your car.Its now 2022 and it STILL WORKS
I worked at Circuit City for 14 years. They made many mistakes. Divx, stopped selling major appliance just before the housing market exploded, the elimination of commission sales counselors, the elimination of spiffs ( basically was 10% say of an accessory's price) that you made from selling it, or a commission from selling a service plan..the big layoff in 2007 that I was a part of. Why layoff your best trained employees who over the years built a customer base. That layoff was the last nail in the coffin. As it pissed off even those who didn't shop at Circuit City. None of my family or in- laws ever shopped there again, not did any of there friends. And another one was hiring executives that Best Buy fired to run the company...
You guys forgot about places such as RadioShack, Babbage’s, Savemart, Crazy Eddie, and of course, the wiz. They was also other electronic stores in NYC called J&R music world as well as Newmark & Lewis
My brother used to shop at circuit city a lot. He quit going because they started firing the people who had worked there for years, and were actually knowledgeable about the products. They did this to hire new people and pay them less money.
I used to shop in Circuit City in the 2000s and Fry’s Electronics in the 2010s Very Often. I miss those stores very much, just as much as I miss stores like GameCrazy, Play N Trade, EB Games, Media Play, F.Y.E., KB Toys, and Toys R Us. Long Live the 2000s
I worked for The Federated Group and Pacific Stereo in Los Angeles. There was Rogers Sound Labs among many others all gone. CBS owned Pacific Stereo when they sold it. Just remembered University Stereo went by the wayside.
I remember buying Gateway computers. Fry's was where I used to get everything to build my own. They had everything I mean everything. Circuit city is where we bought our first projection big screen. I miss the days where you wander for hours just browsing.
You need to go back further. Allied Radio, Radio Shack, Olson Electronics, Team Electronics, Pacific Stereo, Lafayette Electronics, Playback, and others were big in the 60's and 70's.
Great Suggestions! 😀 I was more focused on the Big Box electronic stores. I will definitely need to make a second installment to include those store you mentioned. Check out my Media Play, Musicland, Sam Goody and FYE segment. ruclips.net/video/kapW8k5HoC0/видео.html
If I remember correctly, Allied had a section with the Heathkit brand that had ready to assemble kits for all kinds of components from vohm testers to tube testers and everything in between. I’d seen a tv video about a street section in New York City called radio row. It was a section that had all kinds of electronic components imaginable. When they began procuring property for the World Trade Center the city somehow forced them out and caused them to close. I would be interested to know the names of businesses and what they specialized in. I remember in the sixties and seventies even J.C. Penney’s had high quality stereo components as well as Service Merchandise. They had sound rooms where you could crank up the amplifiers and give the speakers a workout.
Radio Shack, Crazy Eddie, Drucker, Topps, The Wiz, Brick Church, Newmark & Lewis, and J&R were all at some point more popular than some mentioned in this video......
In the 1990s I bought my first computer at a place called Nobody Beats the Wiz. Not sure if it was a stand-alone or part of a small franchise. (Long Island native here.) Also, in the 70s and 80s there was a popular electronics store called Crazy Eddie's. Their commercials were "IN-SAAAANE!!!!"
I remember Circuit City and H.H. Gregg became they both had stores in the Piedmont Triad area of North Carolina, and I used to go to the former a lot until their stores shut down for good in the late 2000s.
I used to shop at the CompUSA store in Overland Park, KS quite a bit. There's still a Micro Center store there and it's about the only decent computer store in the Kansas City metro area.
Fry’s was fun to shop at before the age of e-commerce. They had almost anything you needed, especially the cheaper knock-offs. Their problem was that we only went there because we didn’t have a choice. They really should have seen that and adjusted their ways.
Really enjoying your videos. I didn't realize Fry's had gone out of business. I didn't even know it was an electronics chain until one was featured in Mr. Robot. I had heard the name as a sponsor of a golf tournament before that, but didn't know the type of business. Glad to see REX as an honorable mention; bought by first VCR there almost 30 years ago (still have it around). Circuit City had horrible customer service in-store whenever I went (which wasn't often; probably could count the number visits on both hands). Went to an H.H. Gregg once: walked in, looked at the prices, and walked back out, never to return.
In Los Angeles, CA, for audio & video, there was Circuit City, Good Guys. I did check out a Silo once, but brand selection was not as great as C.C or G.G. 😀
RadioShack was fucken popular ass shit here in Chicago IL they had a bunch of stores all over and when many wireless stores started to close and leave Chicago RadioShack started to close the stores too
I bought a 25" colour Sharp TV there and later a great pair of Sennheiser headphones, both I still own. I bought them on sale-cheaper than Best Buys at the time. My dad and I used to belong to the free battery a month club at Radio Shack. I didn't care much for their stereos-preferred their Tandy Leather store for my craft supplies and kits. Bought my first cd player at Circuit City too.. Wasn't Gateway a place to rent before you buy? There was a store near me, but in the long run, one would play more for a computer than if one paid all at once (like those rent to own furniture stores).
Which store did you purchase the Sharp TV from? I did some research on Tandy Leather, while completing my most recent video. Gateway was indeed a showroom like Rooms to Go, where one would look at the product just to place an order online to have it shipped from a warehouse.
I loved shopping at Comp USA and Fry's in Houston. I used to buy a lot of software and games there. I'm too old and lazy to fool with today's downloads.
Macon Georgia off of Eisenhower Parkway. It’s now a Harbor Freight. They constructed a new location, but never opened due to the company going bankrupt. JoAnne Fabrics took the building.
Surprisingly no mention of Tandy Corporations lame attempt Computer City. Great selection but the sales staff were dumber than a box of rocks and their tech support even worse. Thankfully that chain lasted less than two years.
Hahaha! Since you explained it that way, I definitely need to look into this electronic chain 😆 Looks like Comp USA bought them out. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Computer_City
There was one in Montclair, CA. Opened Dec. ‘94 and shut its doors June ‘95. Great selection, lousy tech support and salespersons who had no knowledge of what they were selling.
Thank you.....you talk about incredible universe a Tandy co spin off.... But you forgot the biggest longest operating electronics store RADIO SHACK a Tandy co....again thank you...
Fry’s had awful service we had a couple near us and we stopped going there because they were awful circuit city was also horrible with their customer service we had looked at them for appliances and got blown off

Circuit City had great Customer Service!
What about Radio Shack? They were very popular and usually carried some great products closed their doors a few years back. Great video
That’s a great suggestion. I’ll have to do a Part 2 that would feature (Radio Shack, Wolf Camera and etc. ) This mostly consisted of the Big Box stores.
Radio shack is gone
Radio shack too ,closed
in mexico radioshack still is going so its not that died because their only remaining country is mexico lol
Radio shach was a bad store ,bunch of them in metro detroit
I had a speaker installed in my 1989 Chrysler New Yorker in 2003 at Tweeters, excellent customer service,,they had a mini theater in the back where you could watch movies while they worked on your car.Its now 2022 and it STILL WORKS
Anyone who lived in the NY metro area back in the 70 and 80s would remember the electronic store Crazy Eddie's, his prices were insane.
Over the years, I have been a customer of Fry's, Circuit City and Comp USA. Gone, but not forgotten. Thanks for the history on the companies.
I worked at Circuit City for 14 years. They made many mistakes. Oh man, Babbage's! There's a name I haven't heard in a long time!
My brother used to shop at circuit city a lot. He quit going because they started firing the people who had worked there for years, and were actually knowledgeable about the products. They did this to hire new people and pay them less money.

An uncle and I used to browse DOW (San Diego). They had catchy commercials. “Dee-Oh-Double U Dow!”
I truly miss Circuit City and Tweeter.
Thanks for Watching! Me Too especially Circuit City.
I worked for The Federated Group and Pacific Stereo in Los Angeles. There was Rogers Sound Labs among many others all gone. CBS owned Pacific Stereo when they sold it. Just remembered University Stereo went by the wayside.
yes I shopped at all of them and frys was my favorite. I even used to work for radio shack for a couple of months.
I miss Circuit City.

I'm really surprised you did not mention Crazy Eddys. Went out of business because of fraud. I bought my first vcr and videos there.

That's a great Suggestion! I will definitely need to make a Part 2 and add Federated and Radio Shack to the list.
Their ads were really obnoxious but their prices were great
You should have added Future shop. I use to love that store.
I just knew Radio Shack would be on this video
Radio Shack will be in a future video. This video focused more of the Big-Box Electronic Stores 😀.
Tandy also had a chain called McDuff Electronics. We also had Highland Superstores and Federated (last owned by Atari).
Interesting!
Radio Shack, Crazy Eddie, Drucker, Topps, The Wiz, Brick Church, Newmark & Lewis, and J&R were all at some point more popular than some mentioned in this video......
I am still using a computer bought at Fry's. I remember the last time I was in the store thinking they will shut down soon.
Walking into Fry's was like walking into a closing Kmart.
I vaguely remember a good guy store in Portland, Or.
Fry's food was NEVER part of Fry's electronics!!
Here in the Metro Detroit area, late 60's early 70's was Olson Electronics, then came Radio Shack and Circuit City.

I miss Circuit City, Radio Shack and Fry's here in Las Vegas...all we have left is Best Buy. 😕
The only one I've heard of is Circuit City. I'd buy cds there on occasion.
I love the look of the Circuit City in Macon, Georgia.
