Initially, I was pretty offended after watching this video, thinking thoughts like "what a total hack job", but it triggered me to watch a newsnight interview with Damien Hirst and Jeff Koons and then a BBC documentary about Jeff Koons. Having watched these, I've learnt that commercialism, consumerism, pop culture, branding etc are, or have been, an integral part of Jeff Koons' body of work. And a large part of his work relies on copying or replicating objects, (in this case the works of the Masters) like the metal inflatable objects, balloon animals and beach toys. The Masters' works seem to have become the new 'readymade' objects he's chosen to replicate. Also, I learned about the significance of the gazing ball. He's not simply placing a bauble in front of the painting or object; these gazing balls are an artifact from his childhood that he's preserving, and people would have them outside their houses. Because his works have been inspired by with the commercial it actually makes sense for him to work with a brand like Louis Vuitton; I understand it as the artist just getting closer, if not enveloping or being enveloped by, the thing that has inspired the art in the first place. The artist has now created an object that the artist might have replicated, i.e. the handbag.
@sophie wilde Thanks for the kind reply. I haven't studied art history / theory; I've always loved art, but went through a period of time of being completely out of touch with it; not practising it, drawing, etc. When I eventually got back into the hobby, the subject as a whole opened up to me even more too and I became really interested in the history / theory side. I absolutely love going to galleries and museums, and I feel like I 'get it' all a bit better.
It makes me uncomfortable how he keeps saying “we” and “us”, when it appears he is the only one not actually contributing any skill or technique to the work. Unlike the artists that he’s hired to paint for him. Maybe I’m just not getting it but this feels wrong.

He put the reflective balls so people take pictures of themselves for Instagram, hence promoting his name to the millennials and gen z.
