When not using cruise control you can use the electric motor alone with the engine off, up to 70 mph BUT you have to be progressive with the gas pedal. This may not sound that great, however it seems to be amazing considering the fact that I am always going up & down mountains. I do know that on long trips on the freeway, I will average about 56-58 mpg while going about 75mph. I honestly love this car. Is it the greatest driving car out there? No, but this is not why you buy these cars. What it is meant to be, it does a better job at than I could have ever asked for. When I did the calculations to see how long it would take this car to pay for itself over the Honda Civic I had before that car got 30 miles per gallon average only based my average with the Toyota on 50 miles per gallon turns out I am well over double the miles per gallon that my civic got. This thing would blow my civics doors off as well granted that I had an older Civic 2003. With the fuel prices today at over 425 a gallon as far as I’m concerned this car was the best investment I ever made. My dealer offered to give me trade in in the last month for about $300 less than I paid for it brand new almost 3 years ago.
It will outlast any civic guaranteed! Been driving my Red 2003' Toyota Corolla since new with no issues. I smile every time I start it up. With basic maintenance these machines run forever...
I would love to see your review of the Camry Hybrid. By the way, the small 15" wheels get better gas mileage than the larger wheel. That is True for the Tesla and other cars with different wheel sizes offered. The 20" wheels on the Tesla drop the miles available a bunch. I believe it is because of the shock absorbtion that is done by the tire before it makes the suspension move.
@@KirkKreifels The smaller the rim normally the lighter the wheel, unless the larger wheel is forged. Every bump absorbed by the deeper tire takes more energy with a shallower tire when the suspension of the car moves----All changes of direction cost energy. I like your channel, keep it up.
Great review. We need to find someone in Michigan driving 80 on highway in middle of January with -10°C with some slight hills or even in PA. Those fuel economy numbers would be interesting. FL is on the opposite spectrum, flat and warm and city driving. I have my 2022 coming in September but 95% will be done on highway 75-80mph. I'm expecting to lose at least 5-10 mpg in the winter when we hit minus temps. We'll see.
You Americans are really missing out on the Estate hybrid Corollas in Europe. And our Corollas are just basically rebadged Aurises. They also come with larger 2.0l hybrids if I'm not mistaken.
I like the new channel map preview update on the channel lol! Kirk: it just depends on snakes, bush rats, alegators, walabyes u come across today! Me: it just depends on how many elantras I come across today, every day and every year! :D
The Corolla sedan is what Prius should've looked like a long time ago. The wagon here in Europe also looks quite nice, and gets the 180hp 2-liter hybrid powertrain as an option.
I usually only like the video’s, but the effort you put in this video is phenomenal. You deserve a like, comment & subscribe from me! I’m from Belgium and enjoyed every second of this.
Fuel economy is nice, but I don't live for fuel economy. When I need to pass on a 2-lane road or drive at higher elevations in the Western U.S., this kind of lackluster performance is unacceptable. Hopefully, Toyota's upcoming Corolla Cross Hybrid will rectify this, while maintaining excellent mpg (as the Camry Hybrid does).
The 64 mpg was just an average. You gotta know how many fuel gallons it burned. My 2012 prius c sometimes it shows between 54 to 67 mpg but at the end of 9 gallons of fuel I divide total miles used and it comes to 52 mpg.
I noticed my Corolla hybrid shuts off after an hour or so of idling I take naps in my car is there a way to keep the engine running all night when I had the 2008 Prius I would sleep in there all night running the air condition it would only use like a gallon of gas how do I turn off the automatic idle shutdown
Good commentary. I jst got 60.1 on my 2019 prius. And yes, it was almost 80°. Winter, 47 & up. I had some wrk done on my prius & they gave me a 2021 regular Corolla loaner. Ive always love the look/sporty corollas but Im partial to my prius the way it drove.

For MPGs, you need to fill up the tank, make the trip and then refill....calculate. The dash is often wrong on cars. I'm sure it was still 60+ though which is impressive.
@@KirkKreifels yep. That is spectacular. I have a 2001 Honda Insight so I know all about mpgs. Wish this was a hatchback. Also, that 0 to 60 was horrible. Specifically the first 2 seconds of it the car didnt even looks like it moved
Hello. I have a question. My commute involves merging into highways often. I’m afraid this might be too slow to merge into highways. Is that something to be genuinely scared about ?
Not sure about the US spec Corolla Hybrid, but the european Corolla Hybrid has a Li-Ion Battery with 746 Wh. The old NiMH battery pack was 1,3 kWh. (the 2,0l Hybrid system that's available for Corolla, and C-HR in Europe still uses a NiMH battery with around 1,4 kWh, not sure why Toyota kept the NiMH-battery there)
He keeps talking about how great Florida is but he's also here in the nicest time of year. I want to see how his opinion changes once we get into the heat, humidity, and thunderstorms (and maybe hurricanes) of the summer
@@aternateus5835 Depends on where in Florida you are talking about. The center of Florida has some gently rolling hills. Once you get south of Interstate 4, tho, it is all downhill and flat as a tabletop. And yes, I live here too. Late October to mid May it is decent, then the storms start to come with some regularity for a few months. Tho, when I lived here in the 70s it seemed that late May through the end of June was the extent of the " rainy season ".
@@howardkerr8174 I lived in winter garden for sometime as well..the only hill basically in FL, FL used to be great until the tolls went up everywhere, everyone started moving in and the price of housing and food skyrocketed
I don’t believe you have to worry about running the AC and having it affect fuel economy in that car because the AC runs off the lithium battery not the engine. That’s done by design so it intentionally will not affect feel economy.
It will, since the gasoline engine charges the hybrid battery when it's depleted, but the impact will be less than if the AC ran with the gasoline engine.
@@KirkKreifels I really enjoyed this. I didn't mind the length of the video. You did well. I can't find a flaw in your review. You did it your way and it came out great. I like the fact that u spoke about them temps and no hills. Very good job K.K
That was a great review Kirk and beautiful scenic drive to boot. Love your style of review. Any chance you could do a review of the Honda Insight.... curious at what kind of mpg you would get. I'm a huge fan of hybrids, presently have a new Rav4 XSE hybrid but previously had a 2019 Insight touring which had similar mpg that you got on this Corolla hybrid.
Yes, more mpg circuit driving. And my 2008 Prius touring with 160k miles still gets 44-45 mpg. Toyota is the only car I will consider because of their long lives and reliability.
Yes the EPA fuel test numbers are pretty identical but the Corolla in real life crushes those EPA numbers. I can vouch for them too. In a 70 percent highway 70MPH drive....not the hybrid strong area...I got 64.8 MPG off the first tank and not too much babying for fuel economy. I would like to live with the larger Camry Hybrid for a couple weeks too.
I get 60 or more miles per gallon with my 2021 Corolla Hybrid, short trips get lower miles per gal 45 to 55. I use power mode and EV mode combined. The EV kicks in when the speed levels out after acceleration has stopped. If you don't have ev mode, that sucks. The eco mode just makes the gas pedal stiffer, is doesn't do anything to affect gas economy other than making your foot push harder to increase your speed.
I’ve had my 2022 Corolla Hybrid for about 2 months now and put on about 1100 miles on it. I am averaging 65 MPG. I keep it in eco mode. It rides nice, the air conditioning works great, plenty of room in the trunk. Apple car play works as advertised. Very happy with my purchase

Been driving my Red 2003' Toyota Corolla since new with no issues. I smile every time I start it up. With basic maintenance these machines run forever...
Hi Kirk, nice review 👍. Are you still using the original hybrid battery on your Prius or you needed to change it? Thank you.
Good point! Also a flatter surface (more tire) may be more aerodynamic? Also could be a narrower, lighter tire.
@@KirkKreifels The smaller the rim normally the lighter the wheel, unless the larger wheel is forged. Every bump absorbed by the deeper tire takes more energy with a shallower tire when the suspension of the car moves----All changes of direction cost energy. I like your channel, keep it up.
I've got the Toyota Corolla hybrid estate. Getting 70 mpg all day long. 2019 model.
Thank you for this looking to possibly purchase one later this year.
Enjoying your review from Spain! I have Toyota Corolla Touring Sports and it's amazing but a bit noisy at 120km/h.
Thanks for tuning in! Muchas gracias
I definitely need 52 to 66 miles per gallon where I live some people drive a very long way to work .wish the hybrid had uplevel options
Lol loved how you just pan away from the red corolla to film that blue dragonfly. Great video buddy 👍 👏.
Good morning Kirk!!!

I still get turned on when I see a LS 400 & LS 430 lol

Great review. We need to find someone in Michigan driving 80 on highway in middle of January with -10°C with some slight hills or even in PA. Those fuel economy numbers would be interesting. FL is on the opposite spectrum, flat and warm and city driving. I have my 2022 coming in September but 95% will be done on highway 75-80mph. I'm expecting to lose at least 5-10 mpg in the winter when we hit minus temps. We'll see.
You Americans are really missing out on the Estate hybrid Corollas in Europe. And our Corollas are just basically rebadged Aurises. They also come with larger 2.0l hybrids if I'm not mistaken.
good one brou, you're Dr. Igor Levy-Reis, MD ? jajaja, love your videos
Considering buying one, been looking this week, Loved your review.
Thank you
Good luck on the hunt!
Good information! Is Corolla LE Model the same as ZR model in Australia ?
I usually only like the video’s, but the effort you put in this video is phenomenal. You deserve a like, comment & subscribe from me! I’m from Belgium and enjoyed every second of this.
Thanks!
Great review, real world mileage, Kirk. I think you may have missed mentioning something important; this thing is made in Japan.
yes! It is one of the few 🌋⛩️🇯🇵🗾 still imported.
@@KirkKreifels
I may be wrong, but I believe that the NON 1.8 model Corollas are built in Japan while the 1.8 models are built in North America.
@@howardkerr8174 Are the 2.0L D4S sedans built in NA? I know for sure that the hatchback is built in Japan.

My 2021 corolla hybrid in texas is 40 to 44mpg. 0-70- stop sign. Louisiana 60+mpg.
Great vid and info.! Thanks.
Toyota corolla needs a refresh soon. The new civic has been revealed and the elantra has better improvements.
Nice Australian accent kirk
Isn't it usually 5 years for a new model to come out? The 2020 came out in spring 2019.
Thanks Jaden!
@@thundergato84 he meant a facelift, which should be soon
@@thundergato84 we should see a refresh for 2023
Awesome review! Was the final mpg reading with doing the 0-60 times as well? If so that’s really impressive
Recently found your channel and am very pleased with the content. Keep up the good work. 😎
Thanks so much!
The 2023 mpg I’m getting is 56.1 but that extra power is definitely worth the less bit of mpgs
Yep... Puts my 2020 Toyota Corolla Hybrid to shame (54 mpg average).
North Virginia, DC area.
The 64 mpg was just an average. You gotta know how many fuel gallons it burned. My 2012 prius c sometimes it shows between 54 to 67 mpg but at the end of 9 gallons of fuel I divide total miles used and it comes to 52 mpg.
well average is the right presentation in this context
Wonderful review as always kirk, I enjoyed it
Thanks!
This car also has a large trunk area. Much larger than my 2013 Camry hybrid.
I noticed my Corolla hybrid shuts off after an hour or so of idling I take naps in my car is there a way to keep the engine running all night when I had the 2008 Prius I would sleep in there all night running the air condition it would only use like a gallon of gas how do I turn off the automatic idle shutdown
Very well done, I like this review style. 👍🏾
Thanks Jeff!
Thanks mate! I'd love to test the new prius!
1.Florida is flat so its not like you are driving up hills. 2. Its around 70-80 degrees which is optimal for Prius batteries.
Yes. Conditions are favorable here for good fuel economy
Hi @Kirkkreifels I just wanted to say thank you for all you do for bringing us new vehicle content, and I also love the one music that you usually play like in this video called Reverse I have it on my Spotify and I play it every night on my way home after a long day at work it's like a chill relaxing music
Cheers Mikey!
Awesome video Kirk. Does the corolla hybrid offer different modes? Like eco or sport
Yes. I was in eco the entire time besides 0-60s.. is was in pwr mode for those
Why can't toyota offer the hybrid in the corolla hatchback.
Because Prius exists still:
For MPGs, you need to fill up the tank, make the trip and then refill....calculate. The dash is often wrong on cars. I'm sure it was still 60+ though which is impressive.
Yeah this is true. I've heard the computer for this car is about 2mpg above what is actual. Still over 60! 🙂
I've been in Florida for many summers 2011-2017. I still love it.
It's also completely flat no hills at all.
@@aternateus5835
Depends on where in Florida you are talking about.
@@KirkKreifels I guess I just dislike FL in general and feel stuck here, so it takes some effort to see why someone would like the "sunshine" state
I don’t believe you have to worry about running the AC and having it affect fuel economy in that car because the AC runs off the lithium battery not the engine. That’s done by design so it intentionally will not affect feel economy.
It will, since the gasoline engine charges the hybrid battery when it's depleted, but the impact will be less than if the AC ran with the gasoline engine.
A very good review.
Real world situation. Thanks
Thanks!
@@KirkKreifels I really enjoyed this. I didn't mind the length of the video. You did well. I can't find a flaw in your review. You did it your way and it came out great. I like the fact that u spoke about them temps and no hills. Very good job K.K
Nice review, would you prefer this or a Camry Hybrid?
If you can just get the hybrid Camry

Looks like a stripped down budget vehicle. How about adding a sporty hybrid Corolla trim that isn't so obviously bottom tier?
Hey Kirk when will you review the new Elantra?
The new Elantra is 2" shorter. Not good for a tall guy but a great car. Had a 2018 and now a Venue.
@@thinkabout602 the venue is a really good hatchback small and versatile
ruclips.net/video/iCK0Vw8h8V8/видео.html I already did mate!
Thanks Henry! I'll see what I can do
Yes, more mpg circuit driving. And my 2008 Prius touring with 160k miles still gets 44-45 mpg. Toyota is the only car I will consider because of their long lives and reliability.
Are you still using the original hybrid battery or you needed to get a new one? Thanks.
Have a test on the Camry LE Hybrid. The base camry hybrid is a much faster car and have almost same fuel rating as the corolla.
2016 Hylander Hybrid AWD, I get 29.9. I live in the boonies. 10 minutes from town
