Extremely well-looking projectt Backgrounds are just amazing, giving me more inspiration to add that type of blurred, randomly generated world to background of my game as well worldgen is diverse and cool, thoug caves are little weird looking with their little tunnels definitely something i would play as a kid
despite the screen bug i am getting with it, I am having a pretty good time playing your 2d minecraft ! You sir made my childhood come true and for that I am thankful ! Keep up the good work! ^^
I saw someone else say "Not Terraria" and it gave me the idea for the splash text: "Impending doom approaches" which is the message that's sent when moon lord is summoned in Terraria. :)
Congrats on finishing the game! 🎉 I've been excited for it ever since the first devlog. Although mobs don't seem to be spawning from what I've seen. Also I think texture packs could be something cool you could add.
Old Minecraft Alpha/ Vanilla, Halloween, Lo-Fi ChillCraft,NeonFunk/Many-Themes-n'-Blocky-Wave's Texture packs with a fully functional menu TxPk selector would be great to add.
I've liked these videos a bunch, you probably should add some small things that make a big difference, like: Water changing color on biomes. Options menu and options. Player portrait on the inventory. Player or mobs do walking particles. Little height knockback. Torches break if the main block is broken. Armor. (Maybe even: Other dimensions, like Nether or The End. Redstone. Crafting book on the inventory. ) Here are more splash screen texts! "From a block to a rectangle." "No breaking trees with hands!" "There's a Warden...?" "If it's wood, it's wood." "Exploring the second dimension."
This reminds me of a really old IOS game i played in highschool early 2013 called Crafted. It was 2D minecraft to a T and probably got cease and desisted years ago. A youtuber called MrCrayFishMinecraft has videos of it still but i saw this video and clicked it because it reminded me of that old game i played years ago. This is sick though
I now have: A full chunk of diamond ore, a stack of 5 stone axes, a stack of 65 diamonds, a texture change. I have just messed with save files and asset files so far, I might mess with the world gen code next
Will you be uploading videos to go along with the monthly updates, or just the update? And if you do upload videos, would you talk about the coding part like you have in this series, or would you just be making a summary of the new additions made by the update?
I just played it and I gotta say it's really solid and a lot of fun! but there are a few pointers that you could take from a little known mobile game called "The Blockheads" --Make night time shorter and daytime longer. Most players won't want to play the game when it's pitch black half of the time. This small tweak can lead to a much more enjoyable player experience. --Make it so players can only destroy the background blocks if there are no other background blocks above it. This prevents players from cheezing free light sources in caves by busting down the background wall when they are at the bottom of the world. --Auto jump. In vanilla minecraft this can sometimes come off as unnecessary but in a 2d setting where you're jumping way more often, an auto jump or auto step feature can really make a difference, especially when viewed as an accessibility option. --(you can ignore this one because I didn't realize that zooming was already in the game but it isn't telegraphed at all in the controls menu.) Add a camera zoom setting. Allow the player to zoom the camera in and out. Maybe bind it to the control key + scroll wheel in and out. This can be really useful for people with different monitor sizes and prevents squinting and leaning close to the screen. --If you zoom the camera out far enough, the world could change to a "map render" mode where each block is instead represented by a single color pixel and the player can't be controlled, instead showing a little icon representing where the player is at. This kind of feature is great for giving the player a greater sense of what the explored world looks like as well as helping with navigation in twisty caves. Also like, I don't know if this is even possible to do without causing headaches for everyone, but like these kinds of games are always really fun to play with a friend so if multiplayer is anywhere on the table that'd be cool I guess?
Couldn't disagree more about making day time longer. Night time lit up is way cooler then daytime, it's just something to get used to. When prone keep doing this, less and less games put effort into night and lighting being as cool as they can be and it makes me sad seeing all these games in dev logs start with normal night length but then change to cut the night short.
This is a super cool series. I have only seen this final video, but I will be going back and watching the previous parts. I had an idea though, which would be massive to implement and probably not even compatible with the current build, but would be cool. What if it were 3D minecraft, in 2D. Essentially, you are running left to right on the X, and moving up and down on the Z axis. But what if there were a button that allowed you to move along the Y axis, forward and back, thus changing the landscape to a new "slice" of the world. At the moment it is like you have a single row of bricks sliced through the entirety of a minecraft world, but this idea would mean that all of the other rows of bricks would exist, but only be visible when the player is on that plane. I don't think other mobs should be able to traverse between layers, but they might appear should you flip to a row of bricks where one is spawned. Just an idea, but could be neat. Also, a good representation of how a lower dimensional plane views higher dimensional planes, which is a concept that I always struggled with, but it happened to be 4D minecraft (another youtube game design series) that finally helped me wrap my mind around what 4D space might be like.
I have an idea for a future update, maybe you can add villages, villagers, obsidian, flint and steel, the Nether, endermen, eyes of ender, the strong hold, and the end. This way, players would be able to complete the game. But these are just ideas
Seems great, but it doesnt seem to be able to run on my computer, when it is fullscreen it goes off my screen because if my awful resolution and when i go out of fullscreen it is stuck in the top left and i cant move it, and even resizing the window crashes the game
“I finished 2D Minecraft” I’m pretty sure you missed some stuff my good sir. Where are the other dimensions? That was meant to be a joke, your work is incredible and you should be proud.
A cool idea (which I know will be complicated but cool to see) is “texture pack” support, that way if u have to change the textures at any time you can always just download a pack to make it more minecraft

This is the best 2D version of Minecraft I have played, the flaw is no furnace, no multiplayer, and I can mine through blocks! I don't want to keep in mind that I have to have my cursor on the block that I want to mine or else I will accidentally mine the block that's behind it. Also I can jump 2 blocks tall which is probably a good thing!
Thank for you everything. I've been watching this series since the very beginning and I've loved every second of it, I think you're really cool and you've turned this game into something really special. I think this may just be the first 2D Minecraft I really like, thanks! :)
this reminds me of an old flash game i used to play called MIne Blocks back in like 2010 - 2012-ish. it was a 2D minecraft, but unlike most others at the time it was actually good.

Looking at your source code for 2D Minecraft, it seem possible to compile it on linux IF you made Glass open source, long as long the library doesn't use any Windows specific stuff. I tried to search on the web if you did made the library open source but I left empty-handed...
one of the opening messages could be "also try 3d terraria" n maybe you could get the developers of that game to put "also try 2d minecraft" in theirs. just a cool suggestion
*Awh man* I saw the first in this series and I think I suggested something, I would have loved to get recommended to the parts in between and try again!
making this game open source would be really helpful to some upcoming game devs, especially being a 2d version of one of the most popular games in the world. the one downside being all of the people reuploading it
Thanks for you impressive work. I tried the game, but its still too broken, imo. A few things I noticed during my short playtest: No mobs or animals spawned. Not even from spawners underground - light or no light. Cant make a furnace to smelt and get beyond stone tier. So that ended that playtest. Please keep working on this game - its fun to watch, and I want it to do good. :D
