Robin went from pissboy to pissgirl in record time. ...Happy Pride Month, everyone.
But yeah, some props to the Ace Attorney writing staff for trying to do a subplot about how being forced to present as a different gender than the one you identify with can wear you down psychologically, and how freeing it is to not have to do that anymore... Even if it is presented in the most clumsy and unfortunate way possible. (Don't have your protagonist, whom we're supposed to like, out someone in front of a whole courtroom.) Look, 2013 was a different time, a decade is like a whole different era these days!

5:10 If you manage to freeze frame Myriam's laptop as it's falling, you can see that her homescreen is a picture of Junie, Robin, and Hugh, with Myriam photoshopped into it, which I always thought was an adorable way to hint at her true motivations. Poor girl just wants to be part of the friend group. (Also, the developers confirmed that they revealed what she looks like under the box partly because the design was too cute not to use and partly so people wouldn't think they just didn't bother to actually design a boxless Myriam. XD)

Japanese culture thing. In this case, the setting is a school and everyone is expected to wear their designated uniforms with as few accessories as physically possible. This is just how the Japanese dresscode is and that culture tends to persist into adulthood out of habit. Usually.
Robin's braces would NOT have been allowed outside of some sort of gym class or the privacy of a dorm room. The headband woudn't, ether. Same goes for Juniper's sun flower. Its generally seen as unusual and weird for people to try on others' clothes for this reason.

Yeah, this part was kind of weird due to being written in the early 2010's in Japan, but I do love Robins design and animations. Something I love about newer AA designs, especially in the next game, is the way they make minor adjustments in a character's design with a change in demeanor completely recontextualise their design.
Like the way Robin's bangs work as thick eyebrows when they're lowered and the way the brace acts as a chest binding so her body shape changes when the twist is revealed. Really excited for the end of this case!

ROBIN NEWMAN IS LOOSE. Ok she cracks me up. So this girl is like Audrey from Disney’s Atlantis except Audrey decided to just roll with it entirely. And the stereotypical love triangle between the most popular girl in school, a manly jock, and the brilliant super genius is not in complete play.
Robin COULD have been trans I can’t deny it, but I also don’t mind how this went down either. She’s still absolutely hilarious to watch. And I love how when Athena 1st calls her out, Blackquill steps in and says NO TAUNTING UNLESS ITS COMPLETELY DESERVED AND WELL AIMED. HE’S A MANLY MAN BECAUSE THAT IS WHAT HE HAS DECLARED. And it just turns into “I have made a horrible mistake.” 10/10.
And based on her response to taking off the brace, clearly removing or adding clothing to your character in ace attorney is near impossible if not extremely painful. CLEARLY. Wendy Oldbag has been correct to assume for decades what is WRONG with us?!
Just going to say that I REALLY enjoy all the characters of 5-3 with next to no notes other than I am just thoroughly entertained. 5-2 has the GOAT Damian Tenma yes but I genuinely find a LOT of characters on his level of enjoyment for COMPLETELY different reasons.

... Though it's pretty rough to be outed specifically in a circumstance that instantly makes you a suspect in a murder trial. Not great allyship, Athena!
While this was still very clearly written in the early 2010s... like it could have been /way/ worse. Apart from some awkward and outdated phrasing, none of the characters were overtly /shitty/ about Robin's gender. I'll take it!
I think it could still read as a trans story, just maybe not in the direction I initially expected ("trained to act like a boy," how Newman still defers to some "masculine" behaviors even when outed, etc). I'm sure the fan community has some Thoughts about it.

It's a little bit of a trope to be outed in court. The whole "Gay or European" song was about a similar situation. Often times a motive is hidden by a lie, and sometimes that lie needs to be revealed. Honestly it would be shittier if Athena outed her in a way that didn't make her a suspect, since then there wouldn't be a reason that the secret needed to come to light.

Man, the entire Newman scenario just makes me realize how much better the Mood Matrix could have been as a gimmick outside of court. Obviously it's not great to grill your friends until you force them to come out regardless, but it definitely would've helped if it wasn't in front of an entire courtroom. It'd be more like the personal therapy sessions the game wants it to be, to ensure a witness would be able to present the whole truth to the court. Not just needling them with something that's likely not even admissable in court in the first place. It's just weird how every game has tried to mimic the critical success of the magatama without realizing that the magatama worked because it wasn't used on court, at all.

Honestly, for as much as I'd hoped that they went to the route of "Robin is a closeted trans woman" and just go through that, I can appretiate Robin as is showed because I adore any character that are not cisnormative about their gender, which I can see here with Robin just alternating between extreme feminine and extreme manly within the same sentence. I first saw this scene when I was like 15? and seen someone comfortable swinging between boy and girl happily did leave me an impression that epxlains a lot about me today lol. I wished that everything else surrounding her outing in public wasn't so early 2010's transphobic tho
Edit: I remember that a lot of people in the stream's chat interpreted the whole scene as everyone covering up for Robin by saying that he's just super manly man in order not to be outed in public, and honestly I found that hilarious and I choose to believe that for my one wellbeing

Additionally, as someone who has some experience with fluorescent paint (from having it painted on my bedroom ceiling to match the night sky as a child), I can tell you that in the *light*, it's a rather distinctive shade of lime green (very close to that used by some fire departments in lieu of red--and to the color seen in the "dark" photo of the costume) and, if the robe was really inside-out after being painted in it, you'd *clearly* be able to see it in the photograph, even in broad daylight. It's only "invisible" when painted on a white background, and even then, if you're close to it, it'll be visible.

Means on the other hand has no problem exploiting the system and rigging the court to get his defendant out of deep water no matter if they actually did do the crime. That is really Kristoph so it is likely that Means was Kristoph's mentor. I dont know if it got addressed in any of the streams but anyway I really like this case so far.

It's a bit of a cultural thing you see in many Japanese pieces of media, a daughter pressured to be a son. I don't think it's meant to be insulting, I think it's meant to evoke sympathy for her plight.
Also, how could you avoid having the breath to yell that much when you've been wearing a bracer for that long. It's like Goku taking off his weighted clothing to let him yell more.

    • @shelbyherring92
      @shelbyherring92 12 дней назад +3

A bit of both, oddly enough.
I don't think it's intentionally insulting, but I won't lie there are some microagressions that show through the writing and presentation...
Because, there are some things that pop here and there in the series that are played up for the heightened farce comedy or melodrama, but probably shouldn't have been:
      Like Adrian Andrews' mental health
Galactica and Trilo (men in their mid-20s and early 30s) romantically pursuing a teenager
      Armstrong's everything
      Dahlia and Terry
      Robin here
that one character that gives Zak pause to play the DLC case
And possibly one uh... group of colorful personalities in Spirit of Justice.
But as I said, I don't think it's intentional, just a tad tone deaf and misguided.
Think of it kind of like Columbo or Murder, She Wrote... Where it's mostly harmless gag humor that occasionally misses the mark, but heart's in the right place.

You guys mentioned that Robin must be really strong, but I'd argue that she is actually not all that strong. I always interpreted her constant sweating and yelling as the braces being a physical strain to her, meaning that the braces are put on too tough to have much effect, except causing her constant physical pain. Though from the one line she gets about her situation (Wow, One whole line, that's like, 6 more lines than most people in her situation get) that she was forced to be a man by her parents, I take it she is already in constant pain to begin with, albeit it psychological pain. It's also wild how quick the game brushes this whole thing off. Hooray for poorly explored trauma! Now let's accuse her of murder!
Yeah, the handling is... pretty yikes, especially in todays times.
Cool twist, but please don't do it again unless you know how to properly handle it with care, Capcom.

@@toumabyakuya Okay, let's try to break this down, could be a bit longer, but you asked the question, so no complaining about the length or this being a multiparter.
      1/3
"This is not what the case is about": Yes, that's true, but in a storywriting sense, this then begs the question, why it is there to begin with. Especially since, no matter how much the game tries to downplay this, there is still the one sentence implication of Robin having been seriously mistreated by her parents for her entire life.
So, let's look at these two questions separately:
-Why is it there?: It is a twist to create a second Woman with a possibility to murder the victim. And as a twist, it actually works, I'll admit that. But then again still, it does not answer the specificity of 'Why is it there?'. The game could have, just as easily, pivoted to Myriam being the second Woman on the scene, Robin was not needed. No, this is about the discord that Athena hears in Robins Voice about the friendship: This is the secret Robin hid. But even then still, that discord could have been from Robin not actually wanting to be a Prosecutor, meaning that she would break the promise she made with her friends, which would already be enough to make her anxious about the friendship. But this point is actually never brought up in game.
So why is it there? Because it's the most out there twist imaginable (that still makes sense). And as such, it's exactly that, a twist and nothing more. Which brings me to the second point here
-Why that implication?: Robin implies that she didn't actually want to be a man, but instead was forced to be by her parents, because it absolves Athena of any guilt of having done anything bad; After all, Robin, actually, wants to be a woman and it makes her instantly decide to follow her heart and be an artist (screw the promise to her friends to change the legal system together, I guess).
We can compare this to Edgeworth revealing Adrian Andrews secret in the last case of JFA. It's a secret that can (and probably will) change the (public) perception of that person and it's something they rather keep to themselves, for various reasons. The difference here is that it's actually touched upon how messed up Edgeworths actions are. And while it turns out to be the right thing to do, it does so only much later, leaving it open whether Edgeworth actually did the right thing or a very much terrible thing.
In this case, Athena is immediately validated for the action she could not have possibly known to be the right thing. And the reason Athena even forces this out is because she is trying to have Juniper declared innocent, even going so far as to implicate one of her best friends after dragging out her biggest secret she wanted to keep hidden.
The second problem with this is that it actually undermines this being a secret. If Robin actually never wanted to be a man or a prosecutor, why would she continue along with the charade in the first place? Because her parents are so controlling and she is afraid of what they might do? That can't be it, since she immediately embraces being a Woman as soon as Athena points it out with no fear whatsoever what that may mean for her. Does she have a bloodpact with her parents that she can do whatever she wants, but only if someone figures out her secret (and somehow no one ever figured out)? One moment Robin is the manliest man who ever manned with in the drop of a pin (or braces, in this case) she is a girl through and through who never did anything else than wanting to a real girl (even though she was born as one).
No, this twist is, on a objective level, just there to be a twist and regards nothing else than being a twist.

      @@toumabyakuya 2/3
But there is another angle to this: Athena's behaviour before and after the twist.
-Before: Athena relentlessly pushes this issue. And were this Apollo or Phoenix, I'd not have a problem with this. But Athena has a Psychology degree. Additionally she (should at least, otherwise her Therapy sessions in court hold very little weight) is licensed to be a therapist (yes, having a psychology degree and being a therapist are two different things).
So her incessant probing into the deep secret, which she should be aware of how deep that goes by how little the mood matrix changes in between stages, feels so much worse.
And this is were I bring out the current events: Robin reads today as a trans character. During this Session, it gets fairly obvious that this might not be 'the manliest man to ever man', but seems to have something going on. With the conclusion that '"He" is actually a "She"', this makes Robin a trans man, a person born into the body of a woman, but feeling like a man, wanting to be one. By ousting him as a she, Athena would also oust him as a trans person, a secret that is very easy to understand why someone might not want it public, with all the prosecution and hatred against them. So Athena is effectively destroying Robin's life as he has currently made it. And Athena, as a holder of a psychology degree and therapist, cannot feign ignorance of that fact; she knows what she is doing. And this is already despicable before remembering that she is doing that to then accuse the person whose life she just destroyed of murder. Athena is, in this moment, a very terrible therapist and generally a bad person.
Of course, this narrative gets immediately destroyed, but we get to that can of worms later. We will also discuss why this reading is still not void and has its place.
-After: Here, I would like to focus on why this scene is poorly handled even without the trans narrative. Robin is admitting to having been mistreated and forced into being something she isn't, and never wanted to be, for 18(!) years. Now, you can brush it under the table by saying that this isn't so big, Robin does not seem disturbed or mentally scarred by this in the slightest. An excuse that will satisfy you until, pretty much, you spend any time thinking about it.
They established a character who was forced to grow up as a man her entire life, against her will, by the people she should be able to trust the most, the people who should only have her best interest in mind. She is then also forced into a career she never wanted, which meant going to a specific school to reach this job, once again, she never wanted. And they resolve it with, 'But now she can be who she always wanted to be and everything is fine'. And this, in case you do not know about this sort of stuff, should ring every alarm bell possible in a therapists head. No one walks away from 18 years of mistreatment and neglect by their parents and says 'But I'm fine now and have always been'.
But what is Athena's reaction? 'Wow, what a transformation'.
Robin is being treated as a walking plot twist. She is introduced, is given a character trait, has a big reveal and is then subsequently dropped.
And it wouldn't need much. A simple acknowledgement of Athena that Robin has been through a lot, a single line to her that it's okay to not be okay in a situation like this. An offering of hand from the actual therapist. I'm not asking for a chapters worth of text, but more than a 'Well, that sure happened, anyways' and then Athena moves immediately to accusing her of murder.
This is why Robin is not handled with care. And especially not nowadays. Because...

    • @thecolato
      @thecolato 12 дней назад +2

      @@toumabyakuya 3/3
The problem with the trans narrative in this case: As discussed before, Robin reads a lot like a trans character. But the actual reveal is... very problematic in that regard. Because She actually turns out to be a cis (identifying as the gender she was born as) woman, who was forced by her environment to become a man. Her major dissatisfaction in life coming from that transition that was forced upon her and she immediately gets better as soon as she can be who she always wanted to be; The gender she was born as.
If this feels weird, then yes, that's because this is, in fact, the narrative that conservatives try to tell you what Trans people are. And it should go without saying that this is not a good thing. Even if only accidentally, evoking such a narrative is bad and can be harmful to the perception of this issue. This happening is, in fact, a big yikes.
And it does happen because this Twist is treated solely as a twist with no care given into the actual circumstances they built up. Also known as, a poorly handled plot point.
Lastly I would like to address one possible counterpoint: "You mention the trans narrative, but Trans people did not exist back when this game was written, so these reading are null and void!"
This is wrong on so many levels.
Firstly, literary analysis is not bound to the concept of the times the text in question was written. By using new theories we can analyse, how things were talked about in days past. This is, in fact, a very normal thing you do in literary analysis, because the scope of today is always limited and clouded by todays standards, so only in retrospect can we see patterns that seemed, at the time, normal, as what they are.
Secondly, and far more importantly: Trans people existed back then. And if you think otherwise, you are either ignorant to their plight or you are a good example that no one is immune to propaganda and cultural systems sweeping away anyone that does not fit.
But in case you belong to the former, let me give a quick real-life example with my favourite study: The percentage of left-handedness in America (the graph is very easy to find online):
In this graph, we see that around 1900 around 1-2% of the American people were left-handed. But then the number suddenly rose significantly. To the point that around 1960 it's around 10%. How is that possible? Did we see a sudden wave of people becoming left handed? Did the woke left brainwash people into being lefties? No... what a weird thing to think. Truth is, the number of left-handed people is pretty much stable and has always been.
So, why was it so low in 1900? Because these studies were done by asking people if they are lefties. And back then, being a lefty was equivalent to being a spawn of Satan, getting beaten black and blue by your educators, parents and pretty much everyone else and put through rigorous re-training to become 'normal' (aka. right handed). Oh... that feels like a very good reason not to tell anyone that you are a lefty.
And smart people have now already noticed the link to our topic here.
A group of people being called the spawn of Satan, being mistreated in every facet of life and thought to be mentally ill to the point that you can 're-train' them to become 'normal'. That is a pretty good description of how humanity treats ever member of the 'LGBTQIA+'. And guess what the 'T' stands for (It's 'Trans', for the slow ones).
So, did Trans people exist back then? YES, yes they did! Did they not come out because doing so would be both a public and literal death sentence (based on the experience of their LGB ('Lesbian', 'Gay', 'Bi') associates)? Yes!
So yes, This Plot twist is poorly handled, especially in todays times.

@@toumabyakuyayour perspective is not representative of everyone. just because you are not offended, doesnt mean that this plot was not handled the best. obviously it's not malicious, and i love Ace attorney and athena, but as a trans person, robin is EASILY read as a trans person. the point isnt that athena had to do these to protect junie, it's that it just didn't need to be written this way, and there were actually some easy fixes they could make to at least reflect the trans experience more accurately. i recommend actually listening to other commenters, especially trans reactions to robin, to realize that maybe just because you don't think it's not handled well, doesn't mean it is. again, i love this series and get that it was made in 2013, and it's obviously not intentionally transphobic, but the fact of the matter is that it's still not the best, and we can just accept that

When I came to Robins big twist the first time I actually expected AA to introduce their first trans character and was very impressed.
But then they showed was it really was and... I should've known because 'parents disguising thir child as the opposite gender' is a trope I have seen fairly often in Manga/Anime. And Capcom wouldn't have the balls for that in the year 2013.
The thing I disliked most about the reveal is that for some reason the writers decided to make everyone gush over Robins 'manliness' before in an attempt to artifically hype the twist up and make it appear ore impactful and shocking.
Not only was the gushing unrealistically over the top ('finest specimen of the human spirit in the history of the planet' .. WTF?!).
It also made many main characters act very mysogynistic and out of character for a moment.
It is so weird to hear Apollo and Blackquill talk in awe about Robins 'unbelievable manliness', when they iirc have never shown even hints of thinking that way about Robin. It comes out of nowhere and for me is just... unnecessary badly implemented padding that drags out the scene.

And they were tols the whole time that it was a guy so they steadfastly denied Athena because they thought she was crazy and picking on the witness and insulting said witness masculinity. That is not transphobic. If anything, it should be empowering. That a girl was able to convinxe everyone that she was a guy and they believed in her so much that they stood up for her. Not because she looked mannish, but because they felt her spirit was a strong male one. So everybody knock it off with throwing out inflammatory trigger words like "Transphobic" and all that crap, because iys just that. Crap. This was a good case and Robin is a good character and Apollo, Judge and Blackquill did nothing wrong.

Robin's voice was too powerful for the microphone.
Well, this case just took a turn for the transphobic =( Though given that one case in Trials and Tribulations and just the general attitude of Japan and this being a mainstream game, I'm not surprised. Like, ultimately she's not trans, just forced to perform as masculine, and the fact that they were even willing to bring this up as a non-joke subplot says something, but the way that whole reveal was handled leaves me feeling pretty ugh.
