Heck, I drilled, sampled and tested samples all by myself. The engineer took the credit. That's the life of a geologist...the Rodney Dangerfield of civil engineering
I showed this to my spouse who has been a Geotechnical soil engineer for 22 years and he was surprised on how antiquated some of these methods were. Infact, he has never seen that cathead devise at any jobsite. Still good watch though.
Thirty years ago i was running one in rain/snow mix, rope stuck to the cathead and sent the hammer to the top of the 27ft tall mast in about .5 seconds..had to climb the mast to unlodge the sob. I can think of five coworkers offhand (no pun intended) that had lost fingers and entire arms to those old rigs, they were all auger related. I almost lost the ring finger on my right hand once but my reflexes saved me, cut down to but not into the tendon. Rule number one of drilling- never drill alone.
I have done very little Geotechnical Drilling but I have done some. Most of my Drilling Experience has been in the Oilfield. QUESTION:: Why do Core Bit Manufacturers, Core Drill Rod Manufacturers, etc. list the sizes of their products with Letters rather than Numbers to Distinguish the Diameters whether in Inches (Example, 12.25 or 12-1/4 inch bit) or the Metric System's equivalent of Centimeters? I am sure there is a reason for this which has NEVER been explained to me. THANK YOU In Advance.

By reaming the section of borehole drilled repeatedly, until the BHA travels without any hang-ups, by utilizing a flighted stabilizer above the tricone to smear the borehole wall and keep it straighter, by maintaining a slight overbalance with mud density, to prevent hydrostatic influx and lithostatic pressure from collapsing the borehole.
Im telling you what this guy knows about mud drilling you could write on the head of a pin with a magic marker. lol Anybody douts what im saying and want to know how to keep a good hole in all conditions and perfectly strait get a hold of me and I will teach you for a small fee. But you dont have to pay me if im not backing up what im saying. I'll show you how to bounce casing set of 2-3 hundred ft. That means when you knock off your ear holding the pipe up and it drops about 6 inches the casing will bounce because of how clean the hole is. I guarantee it. Been drilling for 52 years.
It's not oil and gas drilling ..it's probably 3 x harder ...and the rigs are way more dangerous and labor intensive ..in 2024 especially if you are out environmental drilling . Then things get on another level ... especially dealing with people that sit in a office .
Being doing soil investigation for 3 years. Still learned things from this. very good
This video forgot to mention how difficult it is to get along with drillers.
Bring the drillers coffee and donuts and they'll bust your butt for you. I've enjoyed all the drillers I've worked with in CA and AZ.
Scott Merry sir, you will be the luckiest person of the world, cas its really difficult to keep the drillers happy!!!
Yup, just ask us to go 5 or so more feet, or continuous sample.. ohhh that'll piss us off haha
this reply got me very upset, coz in this internship Im about to follow the driller next week

Thank you for sharing, a "must see" in geotechnical courses.
THIS IS A VERY GOOD WORK DONE, IT HAS HELPED ME A LOT
only 18 months ago--this is an excellent refresher to MST techniques of underground exploration!
very informative and good video, will use it for the training of the newly employed!!!
Studying for my PG exam & this was incredibly helpful. Thank you for uploading!
Did ya pass? O.0
what depth of land should be taken to determine the foundation of a building, is there a criteria for that?
Still watching this in 2013! Thumbs Up!
Still watching this in 2017
Still watching this in 2023
Great stuff. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
is it too late to change majors
Shoutout to Paul for bringing me here!
thanks Paul, you're the man!
YAY!
shout out to my foundations class
Great presentation
Really Nice video, thanks for Sharing and teaching.
Great learning video, much appreciated.

If you guys live in Canada, the cathead hoist is effectively outlawed there. In the US approximately half of every driller I know still uses catheads.

@@robmurphy806 that's crazy...they had auto hammers at least thirty years ago.
What size samples are obtained from a conventional split-spoon sampler?
Geotechnical Engineer play major roles in all of the engineering professions
I coming and am working tis jobs 24 years in Greece!!
Thank you very much! Very useful presentation!
Well that was enthralling.
very well done my Sir!
Hahahahahaaaa. you kidding right.
what an excellent film!
thanks soo much, has been of help to me

Thanks, good presentation
Kaya niyo yan. Nood lang guys. hahaha! Reaction Paper pa more :D :P
How do you stop the borehole from colapsing?
By reaming the section of borehole drilled repeatedly, until the BHA travels without any hang-ups, by utilizing a flighted stabilizer above the tricone to smear the borehole wall and keep it straighter, by maintaining a slight overbalance with mud density, to prevent hydrostatic influx and lithostatic pressure from collapsing the borehole.
Very useful, thank you..
How could I download this video
This is the video that Albert Einstein watched before he wrote the bible
How many here are from the Civ324 courses? lol have to say this is actually a good video
Nice video!
thank you, very good video

The SPT method cannot confirm poor strata in fine ground.
Thanks for video
Been in the drilling industry for 5 years and one thing I can say nothing goes as planned lol
can't predict where Noone has ever been
My geotechnical engineer teacher chose to quiz up on this video. I havn't started watching as yet but i'm already bored.
Do you know kimchi? um....Do you know chosun university?
남유현민 no I dont
this is not a good thing to watch when you're trying to pull an all nighter...
thanks and regards
Who's here from Penn State's Engineering Mechanics of Soils?
ANYONE from CIV 324 Geotechnical Engineering II :)
yeet
thanks
get your hand off the rig before it gets crushed!!
This is rather too detailed.....I survived though :)...#FoundationClass
thanx!
good
