An excerpt of Gracie Fields here on Russel Harty's chat show, talking about her childhood days and singing 'Volare'.
Gracie and Harty met the year previous when he went to Capri to film 'Aquarius' with William Walton and Gracie.
This is an excerpt from his follow-up interview with Gracie.
And we all love you Gracie. You helped us win the war!
Innamorata di Capri !
@pahoboye No, the footage and sound is just out of synchronisation on here
our version of wartime kylie
PEOPLE HAVE SHORT MEMORIES
Problem is with Gracie she was John Lennon to Vera Lynn's Paul Macartney. Funnier more enigmatic and misunderstood.
Good point
is she miming the song?
No.
She skipped to the U S A as our boys were returning from Dunkirk in 1940-her baggage was already there
She married an Italian and they both left Capri to go to North America. She did this as the Italians were siding with Germany. She contributed huge sums of money to the UK during the war and kept the troops entertained. Gorgeous woman R.I.P
If by ‘skipped to the USA’ you mean after being one of the first entertainers to perform for the troops in Normandy followed by going to the states, Canada and giving free concerts all over the world selflessly raising hundreds of thousands of dollars for the war effort for over 5 years with the UK governments blessing , then yes you’re right. But if you meant it as an insult then you should get your facts straight and not insult her memory.
