Most of the documentaries I've watched about Jones Town they've all said that they were pretty much held by gun point to either drink it or be shot. Alot of them were poked with a needle full of poison. All the children and most of the adults were. So, they didn't "drink the kool-aid" as some say. Jim Jones and the men with the guns pretty much murdered all those poor innocent people. All they wanted was a better life.

One story I've read from one of the survivors noted that the early stages of the temple was as promised by Jones: A wonderful utopia where followers get to enjoy better food and drinks, hang out with and most importantly have sex freely without any care in the world. It was, after all fresh from the hippie and peace era of the 60's and early 70's. It quickly faded from there as the living conditions worsened. Meat and vegetables were often rancid but since they don't have the choice they're forced to eat it anyway. Add to that the general gaslighting from Jones, White Night rehearsals, physical and sexual abuse conducted by the higher members of Jonestown, as well as death threats for not sharing their secrets or ratting out other members who intended to leave.
It's only today that I learned that Jones bought the cyanide LONG before he set up the temple, making his eventual end-goal a pre-meditated murder instead of previously thought "desperation and paranoia-driven murder-suicide" like the cult in Waco, Texas. Sick fuck.

In fact he often referred to some things as being " Jim Jonesish." When I saw him straying from the bible in some areas, I left the church. He was not anywhere near as crazy as Jim Jones, but many parishioners began to almost worship him. The church had been a success for a number of years, but as people realized that some of Jesus' teachings were being subverted, membership dwindled. Soon the pastor left for another location and the church building sold to another Denomination. The hypocrisy that I saw in this pastor and his leaders caused me to leave organized religion behind. The majority were forced at gunpoint and shot up with it in needles in the back. You didn’t just get to decide to leave either. The brainwashed family members kept the ones wanting to leave by threats of death and they had very little opportunity to get back to the US because being in another country they knew nothing about besides the camp itself, they felt truly trapped. It’s way more sad then that. Some of the only ones that escaped were still horrified that they would be tracked down and shot by their own family members as they ran. Jones’ wife begged him to stop killing the children, and he mocked her as more people were murdered. Mothers crying while their children are injected and then they are fed the poison themselves.

Brainwashed? He simply took advantage of their belief in socialism, he didn't have to brain wash anybody. Their Own communities, the media, their politicians, they already had them brainwashed. Jones just stepped in to reap the rewards. This video leaves out how he used sex to control the people. Not just the women, the men too. A totally sick society, came to it's logical end.

@OneHairyGuy try again. Socialism is the doctrine of the Democrats. Also this fostering the poor blacks, who can't look out for themselves in this racist world, more Democrat doctrine. How many in the MSM would you guess are Republican? I'd guess that if there are any, they'd keep quiet about it. By the way, did you know that Bo Snerdly, and HR Kit Carson who were big parts of Rush Limbaugh's show were both black? Yeah, me neither, because it was radio, and it wasn't a job qualification. So a Republican does the biggest most successful radio show of all time, and his producer, and his PR man are both black. They were very successful men. Kit Carson died of cancer about two years before Rush. On the other hand, a socialist takes a bunch of blacks to create a utopia. They all wind up dead. How are Republicans bad again?

Leslie Wagner Wilson and the group she helped lead the morning of when it happened, didn't just walk 30 miles to freedom. Her account on CNN in its special for the 30th anniversary described walking along a railroad line, and even a train stopped to pick them up. They rode to the last stop, Matthew's Ridge, saw heavily armed soldiers and police, and realized something bad was happening.

For those who want the FULL story of Jim Jones, Jonestown, and the Peoples Temple, from his childhood to the date of the suicide/massacre, you need to read the book titled “Raven”. Published around 1982, it is a thick book that explains the whole thing. I was 14 when that happened, and I still recall the ABC or NBC helicopters hovering over the Jonestown commune, showing HUNDREDS of bloated bodies. The only thing I can think of that’s equally horrific was the 1964 Stanleyville massacre in the Congo of Africa.

I believe people are so intrigued to join a cult because they may feel hopeless, lonely, or people who don’t like authority and among other reasons why. They need a strong support system and they feel like they can gain that with the cult. They offer you nice things and tell you all the good you want to hear. After a cult has lured you in then you’d like to escape or sometimes the people are so brainwashed they can’t escape

I have a watched a Jonestown documentary before and it was horrible but important to learn. When I think about read about, or watch Jonestown, I thought back to people who have done similar things before the Jonestown suicide/shooting. Compared to Hitler, large people with huge influence, and everyone, Jonestown provided a cruel but important life lesson to people follow someone too closely. This lesson is to be open minded to whom you are following because you don't know them. Just because they say things or do things you agree with, doesn't 100% mean they're good people and there is a possibility they may using those beliefs to strengthen their influence. You can still trust them, but it's important to have a balance of no trust too. When it's over, depending on the kind of person you are, you may live the regret and shame you followed this person to the end or not at all.

The Temple was at Geary and Fillmore in San Francisco, the location is now a US Post Office. My dad's Masonic Lodge needed knew folding seats for their lodge room where rituals were held. One of the Brothers as they are called managed to get some of these seats and put them in the lodge room. Every year the is the installation of new lodge officers and families are welcome to come. I went to a bunch of these events as a kid. So, yes, I have sat in People's Temple old folding seats. On one occasion my dad was telling us that so and so got the seats from The People's Temple. This one old lady overheard this and looked at the seats with disgust and made some comment about had she know, she would not have sat in the seats. As a teenager I well remember the Temple but I was not overly creeped out about the seats. I think that was the last time I went to a Lodge function there, the Masons moved the lodge out of East Oakland to Livermore and left the seats behind.

So many gullible people who refuse to think for themselves. So sad how humanity can be at times.

Jones seemed to be all about integration in the 60s. He got many institutions in Indiana de-segregated, and was severely hated because of it.
Churches, restaurants, the telephone company, the Indianapolis Police Department, a theater, an amusement park, and the Indiana University Health Methodist Hospital.
I wonder if he did all of that merely to gain the trust of abused black future congregation members. Religious leaders are highly predatory and seek out the weak, the disenfranchised, and those who feel that they have nowhere left to go.
It's as if there aren't any gods watching over us, and nobody is driving the bus.
So whenever someone says they can save your soul, or they want you to join their group, be VERY wary and alert.
