On the getting our start "kind of writing code", my first job when I dropped out of my degree was as a "Computing Assistant" for a 7 employee forecasting consultancy in the late 80s - essentially just looking after the backups and stuff. Putting the reel to reel tapes on in the evening, taking them off in the morning. Downloading code from a Pr1me 350 to a PC AT so it could be backed up. I wrote a few batch files, and my employers noticed I had some interest and aptitude so they started throwing me some basic FORTRAN tasks. Snowballed from there, eventually moving to C and Windows programs, C++ in the late 90s, then I discovered PHP 😂😂
Hey @backendbanter, Great videos I’m learning a lot. Can you try to keep both screens in view in order to see the engagement between you and the interviewee better. Switching to one face per time, makes it feel like a cut and join video and not realtime. This is just my opinion and it won’t make me stop watching the great interviews you have. Thank you
Clickbait was very disappointing. there is no information about python being faster than rust. please don't do clickbait, we watch the channel for good info and interviews not hot clickbaits. Also, python is slow compared to rust and cpp, but depends on the type of software you build. Yes, if you just build websites applications are IO bound but there is more to software engineering than just building web applications.
yeah we may have been a bit aggressive with this one xD There's a bit in there where John talks about his disdain for the handwaving "x is faster than y", so its a play on that (and that he talks about a time when he had a python script that was faster then a bad Rust implementation)

What happened after PHP? 🙂
@@kurshadqaya1684 25 years of the stuff. Still using it as my primary language 😭

I think he does cut to make the video shorter

Yeah its an episode with a senior software architect who is extremely experienced and likes to teach. I was expecting a Mojo advocate or something.
@@conorx3 Oh yeah me too. Pretty good video though. Didn't like the clickbait title though.

Lol nice - I JUST subscribed to Coding Challenges last week
I hate python , but honestly, damn is it useful as a backend and utilzing it for machine learning .
Man page u build that form scratch before as a side project
this guys pronunciation of rust is criminal LOL
Mojo🔥(super set of python syntax) is faster than python
For a guest with professional looking mic his audio sure sounds like garbage. What an unfortunate distraction….
Feminists would ask for a "girl page" but I am so glad they don't like coding that much
20:30 not me listening to this podcast at work 🫣 but it's educational right? right??
