  • “Integrated Information Theory - Or Why Consciousness is Fundamentally Distinct from Intelligence”
Humans not only can act intelligently in the world but consciously experience it, such as the delectable taste of Nutella, the sharp sting of an infected tooth, or the terror and ecstasy of a near-death experience. Christof discusses progress achieved in tracking the footprints of conscious experiences to the posterior regions of the cerebral cortex, the outermost layer of the brain. He introduces the Integrated Information Theory (IIT). It explains in a principled manner which systems, based on their structure, are conscious and has been used to build devices to detect consciousness in patients with disorders of consciousness. The theory asserts the existence of free will and predicts that consciousness is much more widespread than commonly assumed. On the other hand, present digital computers using a von Neumann-like architectures, though they may approach, or even exceed, human-level general intelligence, will never be conscious. Consciousness is ultimately about being, not about doing.
Professor Christof Koch is a pioneering neuroscientist renowned for his work on the neural basis of consciousness. He has significantly contributed to understanding visual perception, attention, and the biophysics of computation. His extensive publications and seminal books reflect his interdisciplinary approach to these profound topics. Watch his presentation at Science of Intelligence (SCIoI) which took place as part of Nicolas Roth's and Benjamin Lang's seminar "Communicating Hot Topics in Intelligence Research".

The brain criticality hypothesis suggests that neural networks and thus, many aspects of brain activity self-organize into a critical state (Wilting and Priesemann, 2019). Critical states are unique configurations of physical systems that have been a central focus of statistical physics for more than a century.
is there a relationship with IIT and the value of phi. if so then limits on phi can be set though graph theoretics. criticality is not reducible.

I see not reason that as black hole in a complete simulated universe would not act like one in a real universe the only question is , is it necessary that there exist an ontology between them that excludes a result that is essentially different in each. Insects may not be consciouse if they do have a system that reaches criticality
