    Great video! I just did this job last week and was able to wiggle the alternator out from the bottom, the only thing I took off was the airbox assembly so I could access the PS bolts from the top, took me 3 hours but I think it could be done quicker because I took my time.

      You pulled the radiator out?

  • @joefyffe2336
    @joefyffe2336 2 года назад +4

    You can remove the pulley from the power steering pump and not mess with the three bolts and moving the power steering pump. I just replaced the original alternator on my LX470 at 257k miles.

    1998 Landcruiser - Similar but there is no nut on the bottom alt bolt - it bolts directly to the bracket. Also I only have 2 bolts for the steering pump. Not to hard too do with radiator/fan/shroud in place, but a little tricky to pull out. Also, my wiring plug was STUCK - I damaged it removing (but still works). Also, get the big wire situated correctly (wire goes down/towards front) and there is a clip that locks into small heat shield.
    "fun" fact . . . . you can go about 240 interstate miles on a fully charged battery without a charging alternator. Daylight, lights off, no A/C or stereo . . . YMMV . . . . (thankfully I had a spare battery with me).

    Great video. You probably only needed to replace the brushes (about $20) rather than replace the alternator. Toyota alternators are far more repairable than most other makes.

    You don’t have to remove the power steering pump, just remove the pulley. It’s easy and don’t need a puller; it’s a spline shaft and slides right off.

    Are you sure the torque specs are accurate? 20 lbs on the alternator n 11 lbs on the power steering pump? Seems light. If u don’t want to remove radiator you can drain and remove lower hose and transmission cooler lines and take alternator out from bottom.

    Do you really have to take off the radiator? That is probably the hardest part since you gotta drain it out too.

    • @BeginnersLuckGarage
      @BeginnersLuckGarage  3 года назад

      No. You don’t need to take the radiator off. I did because I had to replace it anyway. Just make sure you put something against the face of the radiator so you don’t damage the fins while you are working.

    • @BeginnersLuckGarage
      @BeginnersLuckGarage  6 лет назад +1

      I was replacing the radiator anyway so i did remove it. but you can do it without removing the radiator. It will just be more of a pain in the A$$. You will still have to remove the fan and shroud. Just make sure you use some cardboard over the radiator so you don't damage the fins while working. Good luck!

      I replaced mine from underneath. Remove the skid plate. Also you can just remove the three bolts from the water pump and it will move enough to put the alternator back in without having to actually to relocate any part of it. I left everything else in place. I have a '98 Landcruiser.

    Good video. Just a reminder of how it comes off. Now, a question: why has everyone below the age of 40 become an "uptalker?" The voice inflection at the end of every sentence or comment goes up. It's like asking a question with every comment. Much like saying "do you understand what I'm saying" about a bazillion times in this video. He's not alone, it's sort of like the trend of everyone starting a sentence now withe the word "so." drives me F'n crazy!

      I did it without removing the radiator. A little tight pulling it out but by keeping the pulley of the alternator towards the driver side, and bending the ax hard lines a little I was able to wiggle it out the bottom.

    Same thing just happened to me yesterday. Alternator is acting up depends on throttle. It's the second alternator for the last year. First from O'Reilly ran for about 2 weeks and second from Autozone went bad 22k miles later. So now, no more cheap reman stuff, I'll buy the best alternator I can. By the way, I was able to drive home for 2 hours like that. Can't see the link for alternator though. Thank you

      sorry to hear about the crappy alternators. what a pain. It slightly depends on the year of the car. I got a Denso Re-manufactured one for about $150. This is the factory one that Toyota used. link below: www.partsgeek.com/mmparts/alternator/lexus/lx470.html

      We have a '91 TLC. We had a shop put in a new alternator they'd told us to just buy from O'Reilly's. It only lasted 8,000 miles!! What a piece of junk. (The original had over 180,000 on it). What a waste of lotsa $. Now bought a new one from Toyota and it's tough to put in. Frustrating! We'll see. Thanks for sharing your stories and video.

      @@BeginnersLuckGarage My Toyota Dealer just quoted me this:
      Part # 27060-50260-84 - $292.99 alternator
      Part # 90916-02586 - $115.99 - drive belt

      Tax - $25
      Total - $764
      Discount (over $500 get $50 off) - $50 off
      Total w/ discount - $714
      I can buy the same parts online from the dealer (rather than at the counter or have the service department provide them as part of the replacement as quoted above), and pick them up at the dealer for about 40% less ($193 for the alternator and $67 for the belt). The dealer may be willing to match their online price or have me purchase the parts to provide them for the labor cost. Keep in mind these are genuine Toyota parts (of course, they will not install non-Toyota parts). The alternator is a remanufactured one. The parts have a 12 months warranty.
      I hope this helps.
