Tourette's syndrome is a neurological condition and disability which causes involuntary movements called tics. I use my platforms on social media such as TikTok, RUclips and Instagram to advocate and raise awareness for the condition and show what it is like living with a disability as a teen in school.
My name is Zara Beth (zeezee25 on tiktok) and I post videos about tics, tic disorders and what its like to be a teen living with Tourette's syndrome, Functional Neurological Disorder (FND) and a seizure disorder (NEAD/NES).
I show what its like having tics and Tourettes in class and in school and college, vlog, and I also bake, do other challenges and answer all your questions in Q and A videos.
I am also an ambulatory wheelchair user so I show what life looks like using various mobility aids and how needs change from day to day!
I am also a musician! My newest release is my first single (original song) called "She's Mine" which is now available on all streaming services - I sing and play piano, guitar, ukulele and I write, produce, mix and master all my own songs and content myself!
For anyone not in the UK the sunflower lanyard let's people know that the person has an invisible disability of some kind without them having to tell people or let everyone know what it is or constantly explain themselves. They became a thing during covid when people who couldn't wear a mask started getting questioned in shops and now they're quite popular. I wish it had been a thing when I was a kid because I grew up chronically ill and while I am now severely and visibly disabled I wasn't as a child and teenager and I had so many awkward interactions and I had a lot of older adults especially assume I was doing something wrong on purpose (for example I've always gotten hand spasms and I would accidentally drop things or knock them over and not be able to risk bending over to pick them up because I would also be on the floor if I did that) and tell me off at which point I'd cry which was extremely embarrassing (and yes when I wasn't busy being harassed by strangers I did let the staff know when I dropped stuff and they never had a problem and were always very helpful and sweet to me). Letting people know from a glance that you might need a bit grace or extra help is really helpful. My mum has recently become chronically ill and there's an unexpectedly massive difference to how she's treated with one vs without one (it doesn't really make a difference for me now in a big electric wheelchair with visibly large spasms).
They actually became a thing WAAAAY before Covid, as they were used in airports to signal hidden disabilities to the staff so they knew to help you get to your flight okay. Covid basically just widespread it :)
Also a thing in places like denmark we got them around the same time:)
Didn't know other countries had the exact same thing
(Only difference being I think ours is like this ripped material while this one seems plasticky?)
@@joeheart5808they're kinda a cloth like material here in the UK :))
Also in Australia
I wish we came up with a system like that where I live in Canada. Here, people with disabilities continue to be judged and harassed.
i work in a shop and the sunflower lanyards are so useful for me too! i know to slow down, turn down the sound of the till beeps, talk clearer etc
Thank you so much! It helps SO much if ppl just grant some patience and empathy :)
I’ve got one I keep loosing it but most of the time it’s around my neck 😆
Before I went on my third trip to the UK (American here), I’d heard about the sunflower lanyard scheme. Being autistic and having chronic illness, I dreaded the arrival lines. I called Heathrow a couple of weeks prior to my trip and they sent me one. It was a game changer! I got steered out of the big queue and right to an agent. It was my first time at Heathrow so, I asked someone if they could tell me where I was supposed to go, and they offered to walk with me because it was very crowded. It also helped in the shops etc., not a single person acted like I was a burden. I wish we had that here in the US!
Heathrow airport is literally like a shopping mall just with planes attached 😂
I wish the sunflower lanyard was a universal thing. It really helped me in England when I lived there, but we don’t have it in Norway (where I live now). I’ve read that the airport in Copenhagen is trying to implement them, and Norway’s airports are «considering» them, but I don’t understand what’s holding them back! So helpful, so simple.
It is more universal within EU countries as well!
I'm in Denmark and I'm seeing quite a few around! Interestingly, I got mine at Ikea, they had plenty on offer, no questions asked.
@@celeluwhenthis is why it isn’t adopted and used everywhere. Because anyone can blend in to have extra privilege, attention, free things, etc.
From what I've heard we do have them here in Norway 😊 although I've only heard a few people talk about it in a support group on facebook, and I think they ordered it from a danish website, but the website did list Norway as a country where you can use it (if I remember correctly)😅 they definitely did have the lanyard, I just don't know if most people here would know what it means if they see someone wear one😅
@@alienmissy4836Only a very few places recognize them officially here in Norway. The website you were linked to is likely the official invisible disabilities website, and while Norway is listed its still shipped from Denmark using DKK. Høyt og Lavt and Sommerland i Bø are two places I did find them recognized at, but I'm not sure you can get them from either place like how they're given out elsewhere
OMG I HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM WITH Loops and i hadn’t been able to find a person who related UNTIL NOW. Thank you for sharing !
I switched to Eargasm earplugs. They are a lot quieter on the body echo sounds.
I've found Flare audio quite good for this. I got a size too small so mine actually hurt my ears coz im constantly jamming them back in, but the audio quality is SO nice, takes away that awful grating some sounds give off. I will invest in the right size in the future for sure
@@bonniepaora8664seconded Flare- they’ve been a godsend for me, they take the bite out of the sounds without affecting the way you hear it or yourself
I've recently bought some Calmer earplugs which sort of direct the noise, rather than dampen it (their website explains it better), so it's changing the quality not the volume of the sound. Not tried them in any really noisy environments yet, but they do seem to work.
I know we have a long way to go but I'm so delighted you have so many things to help you. I've DCD and suspected ADHD and sensory issues. I had no idea I was any different from others when I was a kid. As a you adult working as a teacher, the school alarm went off and I seriously thought I was going to pass out but had to pick myself up not let the kids see the tears in my eyes. I have some strategies not but not nearly enough and I get very anxious
I used to have the same problems with my Loops, now I use a product called Flare Audio. It’s like a little funnel that dampens the noise bouncing around in your ear canal. Because they have a hole at the end of them, I find that I don’t get that reverberation in my head from my voice AND I find it easier to hear what people are saying! They make noise less ✨chaotic✨, I love them so much lol
I've recently bought some Calmer ones which work in a similar way
I have those, but was wanting to swap to loops because i find them too tickly in my ears!
I like your lanyard! I just learned about the green sunflower lanyard is a symbol for “invisible illnesses” in the UK, I find it really cool!
The sunflower lanyard is also used in Denmark and maybe other places too but idk
Disability not illness
@@N08R76H oops my bad! I have a couple of mental health issues and I always just called it a mental health illness or issue. But good to know for the future
@@TheDollarBean if your mental health issue is chronically diagnosed its a disability, i suggest if youre in employment/education you can look unto your rights and the benefits you might receive based on that, of course i wouldnt recommend if youre not actually diagnosed
@@ZooomieMoth If you look at their website they're used in lots of countries now, but not sure how widely recognised they are within those countries.
Yes! I have the same problem with the earplugs too, it’s such a shame 😓
But I’m glad the headphones helped!! ☺️💜
Have you tried the Flare Calmer ones instead?? Idk whether they are similar as I’ve never tried the specific loops mentioned but they been helpful to me :)
@@hannah._.kendall I haven’t but I may try them - thank you!
@@hannah._.kendall Im wearing them right now! They’re a godsend. At first i didn’t notice a difference since they don’t make anything quieter, they make noise travel through your ear differently. But once I wore them to work and other places the difference is very noticeable.
I work in a very busy environment with many beeps and buzzers and people talking to me and cars passing by our building and people slamming things, basically it’s an extremely overwhelming environment especially for someone like me with sensory issues. These don’t necessarily calm down the business too much, but they dull out the sharp noises of the buzzers by a lot, to the point where if I don’t wear these it’s straight up painful to hear the buzzers.
TLDR: they’re great for loud sharp noises but they don’t really help with the quantity of noises, and if noises are actually loud as hell it’ll still hurt, just not nearly as much
Same! I hate breathing with earplugs in bc it feels too loud and I get too acutely aware of how it feels.
I find it so hard to go out because I get burnt out easy so I love how you’re putting this out for other neurodivergent people.
Thank you 👌 I'm a bit older so I didn't realise that I am nuero divergent until I saw your vlogs. The teachers never knew how to deal with me so invariably I would be punished or ignored 😢 I'm so glad that people are more aware these days. Best of luck to you and keep doing this content as I'm sure many other people will benefit from it. Safe journeys ✌️ ❣️
I have sensory issues due to my anxiety, and I wear headphones to school, and they help immensely. The one time I forgot them, I had a panic attack in the changing room lol.
Get a grip bro
@@ericspagnoli1594 you do realise that having sensory issues is not something that I have control over and that no amount of 'getting a grip' is going to stop them I I'm too overstimulated.
I want you to consider how your words affect others because what you just wrote is not helpful, kind, or even remotely considerate.
This is exactly why I have a pair of Sony WH-1000XM4's they are amazing for avoiding over stimulation and have a feature where if you start talking, they turn on the transparency mode so you can have a conversation with cashiers or staff etc.
YOU CAN ATTATCH FIDGETS TO YOUR LANYARD.!? I need to get creative with mine 😅
I attached fidgets to mine then I accidentally broke the fidgets lol
I'm glad to see the sunflower lanyard! I'm a Dutch person and I use it as well (:
@@noortjevandenheuvel9146 it works in the Netherlands? I'm Dutch and burn out extremely fast in shops, and most people just ignore me wearing wired in ears. So that may be something to look into
When I was a young child, eons ago, I was diagnosed with a “mild form of Asperger’s” which is now an outdated term.
I find it curious that many neurodivergent people are drawing attention to themselves with various aids, such as lanyards. Non-neurodivergent people won’t be able to know what your particular stimuli are, they just act like you’re overall handicapped and talk slower or annunciate words more clearly (like I’m hearing impaired)
I’ve always felt particularly affronted when anyone thought of my “differences in processing, receiving, analyzing and reacting to outside stimuli” as an illness or a disease, or worst of all, some sort of mental handicap. Thus, drawing more attention to myself, especially with modes of action some equate to childlike behavior in need of soothing constantly, cause more misunderstanding.
I wish for more embracing/accepting instead of creating a sense of “other-ness” at best and an identification with a disability or mental “handicap” at worst.
I understand what yo saying about the sunflower lanyard and general disability prejudices. Only social education can improve that. Something that schools could do well. However, the devices Zara mentions can be unobtrusive. Many people routinely wear ear phones/headphones when out, we don't need to know why. Fidget gadgets on keyring, or spinning finger rings are unobtrusive. I've always played with any pendants and/or twisted my hair, it's only in the past 2 of my 61 years that I've understood why and no one ever told me it was strange. Perception is the issue. Some like the reassurance of visible markers like the sunflower, some are more comfortable in public when they're masking. Each to their own.
Exactly what I was thinking as someone with very mild aspergers.... it seems like attention seeking behavior. It's like she wants to come across as "more disabled".
Loop engage are the best! I get really overwhelmed with loud noises, but loops really help when I am in a cafe or something and having a conversation
I have the loops as well and means the world that your find it the same as me. My friend also has them and says she can hear herself fine. I'm in school so some teachers don't understand either. Thank you ❤❤❤
I totally understand. I take my headphones everywhere with me because just putting them on and having everything be muffled is very soothing for my mind.❤
Ah, I feel seen! I find shopping so incredibly stressful and people never understand when I tell them that. The people who DO understand are the ones who have gone shopping with me and seen me get anxious and snappish.
Headphones help a lot, but honestly, at this point, I just get my groceries curbside and most everything else delivered if I possibly can...
I have central auditory processing disorder, and live in those loop ear plugs! Your videos make my day and remind me that I can need extra help and tools and use them.
I agree about the loops. Vibes work much better for me if you want to try.

I use loop and they really help ❤️❤️❤️
I have a similar, but occult-themed and space-themed lanyard. I change them out for cleaning and airing once a month. On the key part, I have a little grub plushie that's small enough to squeeze and a flashlight/laser for pointing or entertaining my cat at home.
Philip deserves the belly rubs
Recently got mine since im autistic and it just feels so validating to me, i love it
For folks that don't know, the company loops are actually ableist, especially towards people on the spectrum which is very disappointing considering we made them popular 😭 Def look into alternatives if you can when looking for new ear plugs
😱 how so‽ and I’m pretty sure Loops were made for ADHDers?
they made a post on their social media I believe that had very ableist language. I'm unsure about the origin of their company but I only heard about them from other autistic people, which is why I mentioned them specifically for the company's rising popularity@@itsdune079
really?! that’s so disappointing to hear 😢 i’ve loved their products for years for their ease of use and the actual earplugs themselves
I like that you don't edit out the tics, it shows awareness and it's inspiring.
And I like that you show illnesses are nothing to be ashamed of.❤
When I get panicky I’m always overstimulated by surrounding noise so I get stressed and don’t talk! But when wear my loop ear plugs I can hear myself and no one else so I find it much easier especially when I can talk! ❤
I feel like I have to yell (and sometimes I actually do) when I wear my Loops, because I don’t know how loud my vocal volume is legitimately when I have them in
What loops do you have? I have the engage and it feels like I’m wearing nothing :(
I have loop switch. I use them everyday plus sunglasses and it’s such a lifesaver. Like I can finally go places without crying because there music and two conversations
Loop earplugs have been a lifesaver to me! I have the ones that switch modes (definitely a big splurge that was worth it to me)
They have made it so I don’t leave events as drained, or I don’t have to leave early
I’ve been recently diagnosed with FND and I struggle a lot with noise in general I so have ear plugs but unfortunately I haven’t so far found any to fit my ears they are very small! I’ve been watching your videos a while now and you’ve helped me a lot over the last couple of months since my diagnosis ❤
omg same, i got diagnosed at the beginning of august with FND and my seizures are often caused by sensory issues. i hope yours gets better soon! ❤❤
Loops can be pretty good, you can get flexible silicone ones (Quiet), and can purchase extra silicone or foam ear bud tips in smaller sizes (but they are a bit pricey so maybe check some reviews?). Hope you find things that help you
Loops come with a variety of ear tips and come in different levels for noise reduction. They just started carrying children's sizes, XXS tips available. I find I have to put them in and then half circle slide to "wedge" into my canal to fit more secure. I found small amounts of time in noisy setting, helped my brain to desensitize over several months. Short grocery trips, limited time at mall on a non busy day, coffee shop when not busy. As well as keep hydrated, eat on time, rest /pace my activity everyday.
FND person here! Sunglasses and ear plugs are absolutely necessary 🙏🏾
@@secretwhispa3280 can confirm in the loops, I have pretty small ear canals too but the xs plugs are perfect for me! They're worth every cent🖤
So 3ish months ago when i saw this video i didnt read the comments but ive been using a lanyard w/fidgets id card ect. I got earplugs and headphones bc of this video. A TOTAL game changer i appreciate you Zara!!!!!
I have never shopped with headphones on before because besides sound, I'm very sensitive to touch, and I need to know about people around me so that I don't touch anyone. But you're making me reconsider. Sound is SO overwhelming. I love the lanyard -- that's such a practical idea and I need to do that for myself immediately! I always leave my fidgets in the car 😫
I’m so happy you have found stuff that helps you not burn out!❤
I have the loop earbuds with me at school bc in case there is a fire drill I put them in and often I have a friend in my class who knows abt my asd and guides me through the crowds and helps distract me(I’m in secondary school)
Love you Zarah💚, thank you for creating understanding. Hope it helps making your life a bit easier 🌈
You’re so incredible, and your cat is adorable!
Omg someone who wears a sunflower lanyard! I don’t wear them around but I wear them in airports, and a lot of people find them embarrassing, so I’m so glad to see someone who’s like me wearing one
I'm also neurodivergent (Adhd and high functioning autism) and I absolutely love my loop earplugs as well. They saved my sanity and mental health during this school trip I went on with my AP History teacher to New York City (from Alabama). I still got overstimulated and had a couple panic attacks but my mom and 2 close friends were there to help me. Then again it doesn't fully help when both my close friends are also neurodivergent
I have the same headphones
And also have sensory issues specifically with noise and textures of clothes and food they are so useful because they don’t make me look different but also I don’t even need music for them to help me
This comment has nothing to do with the subject in the clip but I just really wanna say that you seem very kind and likeable, and you have the kindest eyes.
For me, chewing gum is a good and occupying way to stim, just careful not to get one with too much flavour as that's a bit too much 😊 your Chanel is very supportive and I ❤ it

Hah, I thought the feeling like you're screaming with Loops in was just me 😂
The little “*hiccup* mrow🐱” tic in the beginning was so cute 😂😁
You have the most naturally beautiful eyes.
I’ve got both Loop and Flare. I recently got the Flare Soft and Loop Kinetic and I definitely prefer the Flare Soft. The original Flare are too hard on my inner ear. I do like Loop, but I know what you mean on making your own voice sound too loud!
Your videos are always so inspiring to me!! Super helpful lately too as I’ll be traveling in a week and a half ❤
I can confirm having something to focus on does help so you have a fixed point for your brain while still managing to do the things you set out to do. For me personally it's music that I choose as my focus point for travel and or shopping
i’m so glad i’ve heard someone talk about loops like that! i have had real problems with them. headphones are a must for me but the earplugs almost make me worse because i can’t interact when i need to and then i feel like i’m shouting and i can’t quite hear people properly so i’m constantly fidgeting with them and taking them in and out anyway and then you have to wiggle them back in to the right position. always a good back up though
Omg this is so relatable
for anyone who dislikes earplugs because they make you louder, try calmer by flare! they make everything quieter but don’t noise cancel, and they don’t make you any louder :))
I found them to be utterly useless, unfortunately.
Personally I should wear the sunflower lanyard but unfortunately I can’t
And here is why :/ I have adhd and atisum so my sensory issues are really really bad like if I plan on wearing somthing that I like teh next day if it’s scratching me I can’t wear i5 at all or if my Pjamas feel oily anything liek Tah5 I will have a complete meltdown and it’s teh same with teh landward.

These people were never properly exposed to the world when they were children, and never grew up.
"These people" you know mental disorders exist right? You must be a boomer.
A lot of people act “this way” because of trauma. In other words, they experienced too much when they were children.

If you are put in a camp for war training, where you are trained to be hard, tough, stoic, etc, then you will probably end up that way.
If a child however, is put through a traumatic experience with no guidance or anything, and forced to deal with it on their own, what do you think a child will do? Act cold, or find comfort in other things? Now because it is a traumatic experience, that coping mechanism will most likely stay. Even as you get older.
Get it now?

I wish we had lanyard standards in the US. Would help people with invisible disabilities (like me) here so much!
We have a very long way to go in France 🙄
I suppose that, even if we had a sign to be recognised, we will face people who doesn't understand at all how to behave since they rarely understand any disability. And in France, people who work, rarely care for clients, they're no tips so if they're not in a good mood or just don't want to bother, they will not make any effort to help you.
Shops where workers really care to please the client are rare here! 😅

As someone with autisme i Can totally understand and agree with you sometimes for me noise is really hard to filter out so I wear headphones as well
Also I need fidgets and things that block noise/music because I have a type of ADHD that causes that. I love your channel
Ok I don't know how to explain this but you have a really cozy energy if that makes sense
