Tourette's syndrome is a neurological condition and disability which causes involuntary movements called tics. I use my platforms on social media such as TikTok, RUclips and Instagram to advocate and raise awareness for the condition and show what it is like living with a disability as a teen in school.
My name is Zara Beth (zeezee25 on tiktok) and I post videos about tics, tic disorders and what its like to be a teen living with Tourette's syndrome, Functional Neurological Disorder (FND) and a seizure disorder (NEAD/NES).
I show what its like having tics and Tourettes in class and in school and college, vlog, and I also bake, do other challenges and answer all your questions in Q and A videos.
I am also an ambulatory wheelchair user so I show what life looks like using various mobility aids and how needs change from day to day!
I am also a musician! My newest release is my first single (original song) called "She's Mine" which is now available on all streaming services - I sing and play piano, guitar, ukulele and I write, produce, mix and master all my own songs and content myself!

For anyone not in the UK the sunflower lanyard let's people know that the person has an invisible disability of some kind without them having to tell people or let everyone know what it is or constantly explain themselves. They became a thing during covid when people who couldn't wear a mask started getting questioned in shops and now they're quite popular. I wish it had been a thing when I was a kid because I grew up chronically ill and while I am now severely and visibly disabled I wasn't as a child and teenager and I had so many awkward interactions and I had a lot of older adults especially assume I was doing something wrong on purpose (for example I've always gotten hand spasms and I would accidentally drop things or knock them over and not be able to risk bending over to pick them up because I would also be on the floor if I did that) and tell me off at which point I'd cry which was extremely embarrassing (and yes when I wasn't busy being harassed by strangers I did let the staff know when I dropped stuff and they never had a problem and were always very helpful and sweet to me). Letting people know from a glance that you might need a bit grace or extra help is really helpful. My mum has recently become chronically ill and there's an unexpectedly massive difference to how she's treated with one vs without one (it doesn't really make a difference for me now in a big electric wheelchair with visibly large spasms).

They actually became a thing WAAAAY before Covid, as they were used in airports to signal hidden disabilities to the staff so they knew to help you get to your flight okay. Covid basically just widespread it :)

Before I went on my third trip to the UK (American here), I’d heard about the sunflower lanyard scheme. Being autistic and having chronic illness, I dreaded the arrival lines. I called Heathrow a couple of weeks prior to my trip and they sent me one. It was a game changer! I got steered out of the big queue and right to an agent. It was my first time at Heathrow so, I asked someone if they could tell me where I was supposed to go, and they offered to walk with me because it was very crowded. It also helped in the shops etc., not a single person acted like I was a burden. I wish we had that here in the US!

I work in a very busy environment with many beeps and buzzers and people talking to me and cars passing by our building and people slamming things, basically it’s an extremely overwhelming environment especially for someone like me with sensory issues. These don’t necessarily calm down the business too much, but they dull out the sharp noises of the buzzers by a lot, to the point where if I don’t wear these it’s straight up painful to hear the buzzers.
TLDR: they’re great for loud sharp noises but they don’t really help with the quantity of noises, and if noises are actually loud as hell it’ll still hurt, just not nearly as much

When I was a young child, eons ago, I was diagnosed with a “mild form of Asperger’s” which is now an outdated term.
I find it curious that many neurodivergent people are drawing attention to themselves with various aids, such as lanyards. Non-neurodivergent people won’t be able to know what your particular stimuli are, they just act like you’re overall handicapped and talk slower or annunciate words more clearly (like I’m hearing impaired)
I’ve always felt particularly affronted when anyone thought of my “differences in processing, receiving, analyzing and reacting to outside stimuli” as an illness or a disease, or worst of all, some sort of mental handicap. Thus, drawing more attention to myself, especially with modes of action some equate to childlike behavior in need of soothing constantly, cause more misunderstanding.
I wish for more embracing/accepting instead of creating a sense of “other-ness” at best and an identification with a disability or mental “handicap” at worst.

I understand what yo saying about the sunflower lanyard and general disability prejudices. Only social education can improve that. Something that schools could do well. However, the devices Zara mentions can be unobtrusive. Many people routinely wear ear phones/headphones when out, we don't need to know why. Fidget gadgets on keyring, or spinning finger rings are unobtrusive. I've always played with any pendants and/or twisted my hair, it's only in the past 2 of my 61 years that I've understood why and no one ever told me it was strange. Perception is the issue. Some like the reassurance of visible markers like the sunflower, some are more comfortable in public when they're masking. Each to their own.

I have never shopped with headphones on before because besides sound, I'm very sensitive to touch, and I need to know about people around me so that I don't touch anyone. But you're making me reconsider. Sound is SO overwhelming. I love the lanyard -- that's such a practical idea and I need to do that for myself immediately! I always leave my fidgets in the car 😫

I'm also neurodivergent (Adhd and high functioning autism) and I absolutely love my loop earplugs as well. They saved my sanity and mental health during this school trip I went on with my AP History teacher to New York City (from Alabama). I still got overstimulated and had a couple panic attacks but my mom and 2 close friends were there to help me. Then again it doesn't fully help when both my close friends are also neurodivergent

If a child however, is put through a traumatic experience with no guidance or anything, and forced to deal with it on their own, what do you think a child will do? We have a very long way to go in France 🙄
I suppose that, even if we had a sign to be recognised, we will face people who doesn't understand at all how to behave since they rarely understand any disability. And in France, people who work, rarely care for clients, they're no tips so if they're not in a good mood or just don't want to bother, they will not make any effort to help you.
Shops where workers really care to please the client are rare here! 😅
But we slowly began to have some rare shops that make quiet hours for autism so... It's a first step, hope it will continue to improve.
