Wow, the music and narration really makes it so that you could feel the tension in the air. As always, you can expect top quality content from HistoryMarche and Knowledgia!
Lmao I wish that greeks would have been more united as a one there was even greek mercenaries fighting for darius when alexander invaded persia and also before all that when greece was Invaded thebans thessalians and macedonians fought with the persians ☹☹☹
There is a reason why Rome created those differenr rankings within the Legions. Giving them the freedom to dictate and act without a higher officer authority.
Many armies, without proper scouting, would "stumble" upon each other..and a battle would insue. That's why Pickets and Scouts are always wise, to be stationed out.

This was an excellent collaboration video. When one hears of Rome most wouldn't think that they used War Elephants in any battles. But they did in this one. And probably to good effect. I love hearing about this battle.
The Knowledgia narrator is a passionate narrator. I can understand if some like it, but I don't. I have to constantly adjust the volume and often I feel like it's not enlightening or historical, but a fairy tale. On the other hand the narrator here, HistoryMarche, is perfect for me.
Cynoscephalae is a perfect example for several concepts: - scouting, forraging or strategic hill capturing drawing both sides in a escalating battle - formed up Phalanxes from the front being almost impossible to beat. Unless you are another Phalanx, at best you can hope to hold your line - Phalanxes that have not formed up, being easily defeated by a charge - Phalanxes being also easily defeated by a flank or rear charge The average Hoplite is a subpar spearman, with a really good formation. But without the formation, they are mostly toast. As I understand it, the Romans used to use the Phalanx. It failed against the Italian Hilltribes, so they copied the maniple system from said hilltribes. And promtly used it to defeat phalanxes a few centuries later.
@@fabebn They got a longer pike and a smaler shield. While the range is useful to fight other phalanxes and enemies on the front, it has all the same weaknesses. Or if anything, it has them magnified.
All ancient armies used a phalanx. It came to generally mean "formation" or "infantry formation." There isn't a single type of formation. It's really up to the commander and how many soldiers he has to work with. Im not sure there's any universal advantage of either type of formation in this battle that one side had over the other. In the end, it comes down to the skill of the commander, the experience and valor of the soldiers, and a whole lot of luck. Many of the battles between the Macedonians and Romans were very close, and the Romans had been defeated by phalanxes many times, such as Hannibal's many victories over the Romans during the 2nd Punic War, and the Cimbri & Teutonis around 100bc.
Can't wait to watch Battle of Metaurus River when you upload it. Strangely not many videos covering that battle on YT. One of the most decisive battle in Second Punic War, after that Hannibal couldn't threatened Rome in its home turf...
Great video! I really appreciate the narration of HistoryMarche videos. Calm, fitting rhythm and good pronunciation. And especially pauses in the narration. Perfectly accompanying the visualizations and not trying to be the centerpiece. (The differences in narration between Part 1 of Knowlegia and Part 2 here are striking.)
strategy is smart on behalf of both channels, talking about the same event, they kinda force u to switch channel and see the others video, again smart, but it s frustrating as in your head u know they talk about the same historic event but smthing missing, the narrator , the graphics also binds the 2 episodes together

It is one of the best channels on YT. Everything is clearly shown and told. Well done. I only have one suggestion. You should put scales in meters in one corner of the screen to be able to calculate distances on the maps. It is very useful
It is surprising that Philip was having serious problems with supplies while fighting on his own territory while the Romans, having half of Greece and the Adriatic sea between them and their homeland, were having no such problems (or at least, their problems with supplies must not have been as grave as those of Philip).
Do you know about Kings and Generals? I’m not saying it’s better but it’s just another really great RUclips channel about history and definitely worth checking out if you like this channel
@@YeeeeGreg yes, i knew King and Generalss channel before Historymarche, that's good channel too and yes we can't easily say which one is the best cause their style are different
I can't help but feel bad for Phillip V. He was dealt a bad hand yet he played his cards so well and determinedly, never willing to give up without a fight. Too bad great leaders like him and Hannibal, who'd be celebrated in an alternate universe without Rome, are now remembered for their failures instead.
Agreed. But I think he could've had the foresight to "see it coming". Counting on flimsy treaties with Antiochus was error 1. I also think he underestimated Rome a tad bit. They just smashed Carthage and were on the up and up. A more tactful approach could've bought him time to better position himself against Rome.
@@HistoryMarche Philip should have destroyed the Roman forces in Epirus when he had the chance and then send part of his forces to the Greek cities to seize their ships. Once that is done he can use the navy to gain dominance over the Ionian Sea and prevent any other Roman attack.
@@HistoryMarche there's very little evidence for any treaty with antiochus. given that 1)it only comes from polybius who was very pro-roman and pro-achaean and 2)Antiochus did not help philip at all when philip invaded caria, at best it was a non aggression pact and in fact Antiochus tried to take as much of philip's lands in anatolia and thrace when news of philip's defeat were known to him
Philip's biggest mistakes were1) not completely crippling the aetolians during the social war, 2) not requiring the achaean league to provide troops to his army and 3)not defending epirus adequately
