Great seeing you enjoying Christchurch. We moved here 20 years ago from Auckland and wouldn't live anywhere else. Even after the earthquakes it is still the best little city. Everything that was dangerous in an earthquake is gone, we arent likely to get volcanoes, and tsunamis (tidal waves) wouldn't make it very far inland. We have metropolitan areas, beaches, forests, rivers, lakes, mountains, skifields, harbours, and wilderness all within a couple of hours drive. There's not many places in the world that has that.
Make sure to get to Akaroa, the beautiful French village. Banks Peninsula also has some stunning beaches and scenery.
Hey Anthony hope your having a lovely day and really glad your enjoying life to the fullest in beautiful Christchurch! 😀 some look at the earthquake differently! So many different perspectives but definitely seems good from your side. Not to many people down here either so we feel it’s more peaceful ☺️ also we went over the mountain already and made a video haha
Christchurch was designed in England and settled by the New Zealand company which mainly recruited settlers from Sussex and Kent in the south of England.
I’ve lived in chch my whole life and never knew we had a part of the Berlin Wall here 😂
Neither did I 😂😂
Haha I think it’s new!
Same 😂
You never knew your wife slept at my house too😂
Live in chch didnt know this either
I studied at the University there during the earthquakes. Was a real privilege to be able to help out the locals in the aftermath as part of the student volunteer army. So stoked to see the city starting to bounce back. I know it feels slow for the locals but I really enjoy visiting it now. Has a great community vibe.
That's amazing you did that! We really enjoyed Christchurch and feel the city is blooming with new energy
I remember the news of the quake. My brother was supposed to be staying in a backpackers in central city, thankfully him and his workmates left the city the day before to head up the mountains.
The backpackers was flattened. I didn't know he was already out of the city, was a hard few days not knowing, as up in the mountains they didn't have cell reception.
I've been down to christchurch a couple of times since, it was shocking how much damage was around, and how quickly they have managed to get the rebuilding underway.
Its cool seeing it again in the video, and how much more has changed.
Enjoy your time down there guys.
oh wow, thanks for sharing this personal story!😳 Thanks for watching!
Welcome to Christchurch. I wish you could have seen it before the quakes. It was truly beautiful. Hopefully you'll go over the hill to my hometown Lyttelton.
We did go over and made a video 😄 hopefully get it up eventually!
I moved to Brisbane at the tail end of the quakes in Dec 2011, decided to move back in 2017. CHCH still has a sole and a lot to offer which is more than many cities.
Its a real shame, we lost probably 90% of our old colonial buildings, brick and stone all were wasted in the big quake and had to be demoed. Now we have a tonne of 2000s contempory architecture.
I love how positive you guys are!
Welcome to Canterbury and CHCH
Probably not that high, most of the old building on the North side of the CBD made it like the Museum, which they somehow manage to miss :P
Welcome to Christchurch. Shame you missed out on the temporary container mall shops in Cashel street, now all gone unfortunately. It had a good vibe and helped bring people back into the CBD. You did well parking where you did and walking that distance while exploring. Enjoy your stay here.
Thanks for watching! oh, that container mall sounds cool😅
As well as part of the Berlin Wall, Christchurch also has steel girders from the Twin Towers destroyed in New York 11/9/2001. They're located in Firemans Memorial Park eastern corner of Kilmore & Madras Streets intersection.
oh wow didn't know about that one
My Irish friend from killarney was riding a bicycle behind the bus that was buried by a building collapsed. She was in hospital for months and stayed in New Zealand until her visa expired.
My dad told me he was driving one of the busses that got hit, I forget what one. But he was on his lunch break at the time and thus was unharmed.
I'm a north islander that spent a considerable amount of my formative years in Christchurch. I tear up thinking of Christchurch before the earthquakes.
We feel you we have seen a lot more after this video was made and heard a couple of stories too, it’s heartbreaking.
I have visited Christchurch a few times, both pre and post earthquakes. I always find the centre city soulless, especially compared with Wellington. I wonder how any of the businesses survive when there is just a trickle of tourists about the place. Most of the locals shop in their own area I believe.
Hi , Thanks for showing me my home city again , have not been back since 2011 , big changes , looks like things are heading in the right direction , cheers for posting the vlog , enjoy the rest of your South Island visit .
Thanks for watching and glad you're enjoyed it!😊
Thanks for exploring all the positive vibes of ChCh. The city has come a long way since the quake. Looking forward to microlight over city too. The motor looked like off a large lawnmower!
It's a shame so much was lost during the quake but the people are resilient and constantly push forward to a brighter future. My favourite pub that used to be a church is called The Church Manapouri and it's in such a beautiful area too.
That's what we felt too, the people there have a lot of strength!
Not only is there a piece of the Berlin Wall, there's also a sculpture made from pieces of the Twin Towers. Having been born and grown up in Christchurch, it's a little difficult to watch you walk around a city I barely recognise. I don't dislike the new Christchurch as such, but I no longer love it.
We feel you! And totally get you as the city has completely transformed since the earthquake whether it’s for the good or bad. Definitely different for everyone, mixed feelings from what we experienced.
Welcome to Christchurch! We moved here in 2002 from the UK and have loved it since we got here (apart from the whole shaking-earth bits), hope you have fun exploring!
Wow that’s a big move! Hopefully you made the right decision and life is much better here in New Zealand for you 😎 yeah we still haven’t experienced an earthquake! 😂
Super beautiful in Christ Church in New Zealand 👌👌👍👍🇳🇿🇳🇿
I lived in central Christchurch from '94 to '97. It's crazy the place is almost unrecognisable to me today.
I definitely believe you as if you go on the google street views from 2007 most of the places have disappeared of the map on the updated street views 😞 the place is definitely transforming in the right direction now though!
hi dudes..after the lst quake i moved to greymouth and worked at PIKE RIVER.....so not a good move ...lm shot mentally, everyday is differcult...in different ways .....so after pike i moved bak to chch and was .living in antiqua street..when the 2nd quake struck ...but watching your vids has been good for me..seeing the south island in all its glory.again...reminding me about the goodtimes i had there.....save travels dude and dudette...lol..johnnyd......peace..
Hey johnny hope your well brother :) so are you back living in Christchurch then? we honestly have immersed respect for you my friend getting through the troubles of the earthquake. they strong and keep staying positive every day my friend :)
Fun video to watch and cool to see you both enjoying Christchurch. Something to remember is that 100,000 people live in the surrounding towns who commute to the city every day.
After the Earthquakes the city's population dropped but now the Greater Christchurch population is 550,000 and by 2030 will be 615,000.
So many people from other cities in New Zealand are moving to Christchurch 🤣
I live in christchurch the earthquake devastated the city with the 7.2m . My dad rebuilt thr trams for them to return to the city. You guys are amazing checking our city out. 😊❤❤
Four op shops not too far from you (if you are still in Cust), up in Rangiora. Also think about joining some Aurora Australias pages/apps, as you might get the odd night where you can see them.
You guys are super informative! Thanks for the great tour
Oh you left us hanging! 😆 I love our CBD in Christchurch. I live just to the east of Latimer Square (near the Cardboard Cathedral and new Stadium). You’re about to get to the really cool stuff… I’ll be here for the next vid!👌
haha new video is coming out soon!!😅😅
Another great post.
Glen, please take a leaf out of Mado's book. Always have your hat, sunnies and sunscreen ready to go, when out and about in NZ.
You will burn all that Irish skin off. Also not peak summer yet, the temps are going to get hotter in the South Island.
He got paint all over his hat but he got a new one now😅😅
Nice video, great to see my home town. Although I feel like you missed the most central area around the riverside market. Hope you enjoyed your stay in Chch
We will continue exploring the town in the next episode😅
The first earthquake in 2010 that was 7.1, and was based out in Darfield (but did impact the city)... but it was the 6.3 February 2011 earthquake was the one that devastated the city and caused the tragic loss of life. But please enjoy my home town ... make sure you drive over the Dyers Pass into Lyttleton for views over the city.
the water my sister lives in cashmere
Yeah we heard that from a family we stayed with after we made this video actually! It was deeper down they said that’s also a big reason why it was more intense? We did enjoy it and it was great now we’re deeper down in the South Island but our videos are always abit behind as editing takes a lot time
The shallower it is the more intense it gets.@@GlenAndMado
To be fair, many buildings had their structural integrity compromised by the first quake. Remediations were to be made, but the second quake happened before most of that work could be done.
That place you mentioned it looks like a penthouse at the start of your video, it's a roof top bar, on top of a hotel, called Pink Lady
oh yes, I researched that place and we actually thought of going there but we ended up in the church pub😅
Really wonderful city
This video also really well made
Hello thanks for showing Christ Church City❤🎄🙏❤️. Thank you.
Nau mai Haere mai ki Ōtautahi, Welcome to Christchurch.
If you come to Wanaka and want a beer give me a yell
Oh nice, we will come to Wanaka end of January/first week in Feb. Give us a text via Instagram DM or send us an email: glenandmado@gmail.com😊
Oh my, I live in Christchurch (almost all my life) and it was watching another city..
New pull a new stadium built
Beautiful Vlog
My home. My heart.❤
As a New Zealander living in Australia, I'm interested to see how Christchurch is after the earthquake. I hope the CHCH cathedral is being well restored?
It’s in the process anyways, give it abit of time and the city will be a great place over the next couple of years 😀
@@GlenAndMadoGive it a bit of time? Lol mate the earthquake was 14 years ago and the cathedral STILL hasnt been completed?? 😂
Love and miss Christchurch everyday. From Canada. Lived here for a year in 2015-2016. I was in my early 20's when I lived here so I didnt appreciate it completely. At the time the night life wasnt great and the city wasnt big enough for the hustle and bustle I was used to.
It is the Hub of the South Island though which is arguably one of the most beautiful places on earth. If I had my time back and family wasnt so far away I would have stayed in New Zealand forever no questions asked. I make too much in Canada to justify returning anytime in the near future unfortunately.
I mean it was hard during these times so I would expect the city not to be so lively when you lived here. things are starting to change for the good and we really hope that continues and the growth of the city continues :) I mean if you really love New Zealand and would prefer living there no wage can justify that. you need to change happiness not a wage.
My home town welcome folks🙋👍
Thanks dean!
Head to a beach for Christmas 🎄❤️
We will be in Dunedin and probably gonna check out Tunnel beach😊
I love Christchurch i moved to it in 2016 but sadly got Falsely arrested in 2019 on 15 of march
Hai glen and mado love from kerala❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
YUP have to agree ,,, chch was MUCH nicer before the quakes ,,, That concrete monstrosity in the square .....wtf the heart was ripped out of chch
hurray
We arrived to live in Christchurch just a week ago and this video is very useful. Just wondering if you had to take permission to fly the drone?
Yes you need permission in the premises of the city. Hope you have a wonderful time there!
You need to try Dumplings on Riccarton Rd, it's small but has the best atmospheric and food and probably the cheapest place to eat in Christchurch ❤🎉
Damn we missed our chance then but will definitely pass by again to check them out 😄
encouragement
Beautiful
Thank you! Cheers!
❤❤❤
You are right about the weather it was alot like weather in the UK. In more recent years NZ weather has changed it gets really hot now in NZ. The freezing frosty winters just don't exist anymore
We’re definitely feeling that these days mark! The sun is roasting right now 😂
@@GlenAndMado yes heat waves and fires 🔥 in Europe now
yay
23:39 I was interested in what the bro was saying but Glen cut him off! 😞
💗
I worked there in the mid 1970s...was a great place then...
Wow I’d say it was so different! What’s the big difference since then Donald?
@@GlenAndMadothe biggest change is I was a young man back then and it was a good place to be as a young man 😅. . .is just a shame what happened there, those old landmarks, Last time I was there was 8year ago and it doesn't look like they've done a lot in the way of repair, since then, I know they have. . one big thing is there are not as many people getting around the streets...like everywhere, think those large shopping complexes have taken all the business from the locally owned small businesses . . . anyway I enjoy your company...yas make me laugh . . .enjoy your stay you two
Sorry to let you down. But that river with the gondola on it is badly polluted unfortunately.
Are you telling me that 13 years later, they still haven't rebuilt the cathedral?
Yeah, they're New Zealanders. Useless AF.
Will you be travelling to the west coast?
Yuppie will be seeing everything! Prob Jan/feb for the west :)
❤🌺🇳🇿
Ich habe nicht gewusst dass es ein Stuck der BerlinMauer in Neuseeland gibt!
Mado put your sunnies on. The glare will give you wrinkles.
She said it’s bad-luck to wear them while talking to people or the Camara 🙈😅
Sunscreen and a hat !!!!
hip-hip
Go to the Arts Centre at night.
three cheers
That guy isnt homeless !
Ow snoop doggy Dogg 😂
huzza
Lots of new buildings built because of how many old buildings destroyed during the Quakes
It’s really scary! Look on Google street views from 2007! Insane
rah-rah
Might have been a good idea to have looked at a bit of NZ history before you arrived - then you might have an understanding of why ChCh has English street names ...
Christchurch was settled by people from Great Britain ie english speaking.
Game station was my favourite place a child ! closed down since Earthquake
Where are you sunglasses slip slop and slap slip on sunglasses slop on sunblock slap on a hat is the summer kiwi thing
Hahaha love it but we usually wear the glasses when we don’t record as we find it’s rude wearing them while making a video or talking to someone
You need to invest in sunglasses, or wear the ones you have
The milo in NZ is NOT milo anymore it's some Aussie garbage.
Did you's just call Christchurch a town lol
Hahah maybe 🤔 🤣
You won't see the seedy underside of the extreme hatred for Aucklanders in CHCH,Nelson as well. Shame really, because We Aucklanders don't hate anyone.
i don't wanna say it but NZ is really slow at rebuilding after a disaster. i mean this earthquake happened in 2011. i mean c'mon 13 years later...
ChCh is one of New Zealand most racist cities also NZ is a racist country 🙄 especially towards Maori
Mate your dreaming, I moved here 20 years ago after my first 20 years overseas. Nz is an amazing place! Every person in this country has the opportunity to do whatever they want in life!
This is one way to tell everyone that you don't have very much real life experience.
You are just being racist.
Drive up to Cashmere nicer area up on the hills in the Distance from Cbd ! My sister had a house in richmond on the river but got destroyed by Earthquake 2011
We did actually we explored a lot of Christchurch over 2 weeks and made a few videos so will be uploading over the next week or so 😃
Drive to Akaroa
We did actually and made a video about it 🙂😀
Welcome to my city
That’s Davey hope you’re having a lovely day!
if you love your rugby ex allblack captain Richie Mcaw lives in st Albans north of Cbd
No way never knew that! Not the biggest fan but when there’s an important match with Ireland I would definitely give it a watch 😀
❤❤❤
