How To Break China for Mosaics
by Jennifer and Kitty O'Neil
Running With Sisters
Broken china mosaics are so charming. In this lesson, you will learn how to use tile nippers and wheel cutters to break china plates into tiles for mosaics. To get started making mosaics with broken china, go to the thrift store and collect plates with beautiful flowers and patterns around the edge. Get a few very inexpensive china pieces to practice with too.
You can use wheel cutters or tile nippers to cut the plates into mosaic tesserae. Tile nippers are good for large cuts. Wheel cutters make more precise “bites” but they are limited in the width of plate they can nip or cut.
To use either wheel cutters or tile nippers to break patterned china plates into mosaic tiles, you will need safety glasses to protect your eyes and leather gloves to protect your hands. China breaks off with tiny glass shards that can easy poke through skin. Please be careful!
We like to break the china with the tile nippers over a cardboard box to capture the broken pieces and shards. Start by grasping the plate in one hand then squeeze the nippers onto the edge of the plate. It will start a crack that will break the china for you. If you choke back on the handles of the nippers it is easier to squeeze them onto the china plate. Take a smaller piece that you have broken off and again squeeze the nippers on the edge to break it into smaller pieces. Continue on until you have broken china tiles the right size for your mosaic.
You can also use the wheel nippers to cut the china plate. This is a good tool for cutting out pictures and roses from the center of a plate to reuse in a mosaic. The wheel cutters can bite away the china edges you don’t want leaving the image in the center.
You can buy wheel cutters and tile nippers at hardware stores and craft stores or at Amazon. Here is an affiliate link to wheel cutters and tile nippers. These are affiliate links. It will cost you nothing to click them but if you buy we will get a small reward.

You might not get this a lot, but I'm here for writing advice! This is the most descriptive video I could find on how china breaks. Thanks for the tutorial, now I can write about someone breaking a plate more accurately!
Thank you so much! We try to be clear!
Jennifer & Kitty
This is so helpful. I made my first mosaic table from thrift store plates and bought the nippers but couldn't figure out how to use them so used a hammer. With your tutorial, I'm sure my next project will be much nicer. Thank you.
So glad we could help!

This is awesome! I inherited my mother's EXTENSIVE collection of Blue Ridge dinnerware. Many of the pieces are already damaged beyond having any retail value. I've been thinking of a mosaic table top for a long time now. I think you've just given me the courage.
So glad we could help! We have lots of mosaic tutorials. Here's a selection on our blog: runningwithsisters.com/category/mosaics/

Thanks for this, best DIY I’ve found explaining how to get started with tile/dish cutting for mosaics!
Yay! Thanks for your great feedback!

The O'Neil Sisters oddly enough, I finally tried adhesive & grout last weekend and it was an epic fail! My project is trash ☹️. Do y’all have a how to video on those steps you can guide me to?!! Thanks!!

Great tips. When I try this, will also use a big clear plastic bag (maybe heavy duty trash) to put the whole shootin match in (Box, tile cutter etc) and work with my gloved hands inside the bag. That way I will see well enough what I'm doing, without as much concern about ceramic shards flying here and there. Containment ;)
Smart!! Thanks for sharing!

Great demo on nippers v wheel cutters. I had no idea how to use them and was a bit intimidated by the idea of it but not now! Thank you so much.
Glad we could help!

Another nice technique with taping the rose. Thanks.
+squange20 Thanks!
I really enjoyed your tutorial and step-by-step instructions how to do this and I just happen to have a plate with the rose on it so I can try it too. Thank you very much!
So glad you found us! Thanks for watching and commenting!

Can't wait to get my projects underway!! Thanks for sharing with us.
Yay!!
Thank you for this video. I buy china at auctions to sell and have been looking for a way to use some of the pieces that are already cracked or have other flaws. This is great!
+Donna Dean How fun to have such a good source for broken china!
Thanks for the tips - the box, the tape, etc. :) Just starting out with mosaics. I need some gloves now.
You're welcome!
Thank you for the video.
You are so welcome! Thanks for watching and commenting!

So helpful thank you
So glad we could help Kathy!

Jennifer & Kitty
You explain it all so well. Thank you!
This is the first video I’ve watched looking into the world of china mosaic crafts. I want to ask, do you have to apply a lot of pressure to cut plates or china? I am not very strong and wonder if I might not be able to. Thank you so much, your video was really informative and I am going to watch more!
We did apply quite a bit of pressure to some plates, but others, like thin bone china, break easily.
Good luck!
Jennifer & Kitty
Thank you for this video. I have a massive china set from the grandparents that isn't worth anything, but really lends itself to being broken up into tile pieces. I'm glad I know how to do that now (instead of just smashing them, LOL!)
What a fun way to "keep" the china!
Jennifer & Kitty
Thank you..picking up my nippers tomorrow. Very informative, i feel ready to give this a try now.
Thank you! Let us know how it goes!
Jennifer & Kitty
smart, thanks
Where do you get the nippers?
You can usually find nippers at a hardware store or Home Depot. Or on Amazon. They look like this: amzn.to/3e0GqjY
Hope that helps!
Jennifer & Kitty
Ok ,thanks
You want to use the wheal cutter after you cut the plate off with the others then you can use the wheal cuter to shape and cut
Yes! Thanks! J&K
Do you have a video showing how to keep the center part of the plate intact? Thank you. This was so well done.
If you don't want to break the rose part apart, just use the nippers to bite away the edges of the plate like we did. Basically you cut it out with the nippers. Does that answer your question? J&K
Great video
Thanks Sharon!
J&K
Thank You!
You are so welcome!
I just wanted to know can u just use the white side only i really don't need to use the front the back that's all I need to know
Sure!
Any chance you know best way to break a bowl? Someone mentioned freeezing water in it?
We've never heard that tip. We use the tile cutters. Or you could try placing the bowl in a Ziploc bag and hitting it with a hammer.
Jennifer & Kitty
I wish you had described why you chose to use the nippers or the wheel. What's the difference and why do you decide to use one or the other?
Great question! The nippers are better for straight cuts, like cutting into the plate and making square shapes out of the china. The wheel cutters let you cut smaller pieces off so you can use them to create more curved shapes out of the china by nipping off small pieces all the way around. Hope that helps! J&K
This would be a good topic for a video.
And when do you use a scoring wheel first? Or is that just for glass?
hi yesterday I was interrupted watching you both work on a flower pot with mirror and china and glass gems but now I cannot find it. Can you help me find it again? I love your presentations.
+BarbaraL Lowell Hi Barbara! Thanks for liking our videos! That lesson "How To Mosaic A Terra Cotta Pot" is on Curious.com. You can find it here: rwsis.com/1odiUTS (Let us know if that link doesn't work for you.) Cheers, Jennifer & Kitty
nippers is such a funny word
+felly fell Isn't it? ;)
the whole point was to see how you cut the rose before it got smaller
Hi Linda,
To cut the rose section out of the plate, take small bites from the outside edges of the plate using either tile nippers or wheel cutters. Keep cutting small pieces away until just the rose is left. Once you have the rose cut out, you can use the clear tape method to hold the image together as you cut it into tiles. Hope that helps! J&K
en ese idioma no entiendo
Lo siento mucho.

The wheel cutter on ceramic was like nails on a chalkboard
+barbieguirl Yeah, it's not a pretty sound!
I now how to do mosaics and I’m 11
Aren't mosaics so fun!?
Cheers,
J&K
Never just hit the plate in the middle softly ones with a hammer remember to place a cloth on your plate before hitting the plate with a hammer
Great tips Kobie!

what kid of tile cutter are you using to cut the rose plate?
For the rose plate, we are using tile cutters that are called "wheel cutters" or "wheeled nippers." You can get them at craft stores or mosaic supply stores. Home Depot and Lowes carry them too.
Jennifer & Kitty
Thank you so much for taking time to reply to my comment!! I appreciate it!!
We are always happy to answer questions! Thanks for watching Lindsey. J&K
