At 4:43 there’s a map showing the areas of the world that could see the rare transit of Venus across the Sun in 1769. Nations sent observers to the far corners of the world to observe the event for a wide baseline, to measure the distance to the Sun. Father Maximilian Hell (!) was sent to Vardo, a site about as far north as they could find. James Cook got the choice site, Tahiti, on a voyage where he found Botany Bay, beginning the British settlement of Australia. Skol!

When I was there 20 yrs ago the islands only tree was at the Fortress, it was wrapped up during winter to both protect it so to keep it alive, I was told by my Uncle John that it was the responsibility of the soldiers at the Fortress to look after it. Cheers from Australia for posting . 👍

The old tradition, turfroof have a number of functional advantages. Like, it's cool inside in summer and insolating in winter. And it's soundproof. You don't hear a sound of the rain. It's also fairly maintenancefriendly.

Was the roof turf for insulation or camouflage or both? Maybe they kept it trimmed with goats?
The turf is to keep the birch bark that renders the roof watertight in place. Goats are known to feed on roofs, yes.
If I had seen goats on those buildings I would have dropped my camera in shock (in a good way!)
