Mean Ionic Activity

When salts dissolve, the cation and anion always appear in solution in the same ratio. For that reason, it can be difficult or impractical to measure the properties of the cation and the anion separately. So the activity of the solute is usually discussed using the mean (i.e. average) activity of the ions in solution.
