At age 82, Johnny Mathis still exudes all the graciousness and class that has been his signature for decades. I grew up listening to Johnny sing, and just like Baseball, Apple Pie, Hamburgers and Coca-Cola, I can't imagine American life without him.
That is one of the most beautiful ❤️ quotes about America I ever heard. Thank you for showing your gratitude about the U.S. So many think we think we're better than another human being from another country, but that's incorrect. It's national pride and showing support for freedoms and democracy that every human being should have and not be afraid.

Several years back we went to see Johnny in live performance at Davies Symphony Hall in San Francisco, the town from which Johnny originally came. In his youth, he was a gifted singer and athlete. At a young age, he was picked to represent the U.S.A. in the Olympics and had the chance to participate in the Olympics games. His singing career was also gaining momentum, and he was forced to make a decision between becoming a well-known athlete or a singer...with an unknown future. Fortunately for us, he chose to become a singer. Davies Symphony Hall was packed, and Johnny was backed-up by a full orchestra as well as his personal musical family of musicians. He sang many of his old legendary love songs, as well as many standards and tunes from the Great American Songbook. The audience loved it, and he sang two encore performances before the applause finally faded down. Since I worked in the music business and knew his pianist Scott Lavender, I went back stage to say hello to Johnny and tell him how much I loved his performance...and him. After a packed concert that Johnny Mathis performed at Davies Symphony Hall in San Francisco, I went backstage to meet him in the 'Green Room'. Many important V.I.P. people were there waiting to meet Johnny. A disabled elderly veteran was wheeled in amidst the fans, and when Johnny entered the room to a round of applause, he ignored all the big shots and immediately walked over to the elderly vet in the wheelchair. Johnny knelt at the man's side, took his hand and quietly spoke to him, as everyone in the room suddenly realized how truly unimportant they really were. Johnny is all class. @@nickgreatpwrful5754 Nothing was said in ignorance; God clearly speaks against homosexuality in the Bible. Nothing was said in hatred, this is a genuine expression of concern for this man's eternal soul. The only hatred visible here is your own intolerance for anyone who dares speak with conviction about something, and in so doing, goes against "political correctness." I happen to enjoy Johnny Mathis myself, and my beliefs about homosexuality have nothing to do with it, as I am sure is the case with Jimmy Sapien, otherwise, he would have never come to this video in the first place.
I am a metal head. Grew up listening to this guy because my Mom always played the crooners. His voice stood out over every other singer. Great vibrato. His genre is not my taste but I have alot of respect for him. My mom got to meet him and he was super nice to her. Cool guy.
Somehow, Johnny Mathis has always been in a special category, which sets him apart, in a divine place where he has NO competition. Hard to explain, but there has never been another singer "like" Johnny Mathis... and we thank God for him ! As he approaches his 84th birthday, he surely must know how LOVED and ADMIRED he is.
Arguably the greatest singer in the History of this world. And a very fine Human Being. I grew up with you on my Aunts Hi-fi. I love you. I am a great singer because of your influence. and as the guy said earlier, I'm glad to have been alive when you were here. Thank you!
Johnny Mathis is just a human being who happens to have an amazingly gifted voice. I couldn't care less what his gender affiliation is. What matters is that he is a great human being who has shared his beautiful gift with all of us. God Bless him.
1:39 WOW !! To have a dad who you are so close to that you can tell him everything? Johnny was very lucky to have a father like that. 'Very unusual and exceptional...and the world is even luckier to have Johnny !!
I've loved this man and his music for 50 years. I have always played his music at Christmas and my children loved hearing him. It is no one business his private life. When he sings I have tears in my eyes because of his beautiful voice.
I don't care what he is, he is the most caring, loving and wonderful singer in the world..god love his parents who were wonderful people..to raise 7 children on domestic wages is amazing..so I hope people understand he is a shy talented singer who just gives and gives of himself who I will always cherish his amazing talent and wish someday to meet him. Thank you for your time.
I don't really know Mathis that well....but because he grew in SF, I was reading about him tonight. He has the most relaxed vibe that I've ever seen. He's happy, not bitter and seemingly enjoying life. He's also in his 80's and seems as sharp as ever. Cheers to him having a good life and enjoying it regardless of his sexual orientation. May he be a role model to others.
I love Johnny Mathis. He is the best male singer, ever. I saw him a few years ago, and he still had the same magic that he has in his recordings. How many of you can sing the words to every song in "Johnny Greatest Hits?" A million, two million, three million?
Johnny Mathis is still soooooooo Handsome. I fell in love with him as a child! I love listening to Johnny Mathis songs still to this date. I started as a child in the late 60’s hearing his songs on albums as my mom “glorified” his songs as she played them. I watch for his specials still today!!!! I particularly love his song, “Wonderful, Wonderful My Love”!!!!! You go, Johnny! You Rock, love😍
Right, Bonnie! I always wonder why all the nosiness about his sexuality. I suspected for years, but what stood out for me were two incredible things!!! He was sooooo handsome! His was THE best voice in popular music. In a class by itself. No one seems to mention that. I’m heterosexual. I’m 74 now, white, and brought up listening to him. I always stared at his pictures and wondered how anyone could be so handsome. His race wasn’t an issue. I think like Nat King Cole, and Harry Belafonte, his race had a positive affect on us in our youth, as well. As did all the great black rock & Roll figures through the 1950-1960s. He is an American treasure. Classy and sweet, he taught us all - all colors and sexual orientation - irrelevant- he taught us love and romance through his songs. ❤️ And, like Elvis, but in a different way, Johnny Mathis was crazy good looking! lol
No matter how you feel about him being gay, there is no denying this: The man has stood the test of time magnificently. He has been singing since the 50's, you don't hear about him involved with all this petty, crazy, gossip, squabbles with this or that singer/entertainer, or some other tabloid BS. He is simply one of the best singers there ever was. In my opinion, one of the top three, and there are dozens of truly gifted singers ( male and female) who have passed on before him. More power to you Johnny Mathis, I think your Heavenly CD was truly that, Heavenly.
My father worked in television and radio starting back in the 50's and he knew Johnny was gay. My mother, who was also in the industry, told me Johnny had confided in him. She told me this back in the late 70's. Apparently a few people knew, and they all respected his need for secrecy at the time. He was always decent, kind, and appreciative to everyone in the industry, and was universally liked. And, of course, he has that voice. Always loved his voice. Glad to see the sun now shines through all the facets of the jewel that he is.
I was able to send my Mom and younger brother to see Johnny Mathis in concert here in Florida years ago. They have since passed away. But Johnny made that night special for my Mom. For that I say Thankyou Johnny Mathis.
There’s a new video of Johnny Mathis from November 18, 2023. He is performing in Vegas… His voice has not changed at all… Still beautiful, and sexy. Johnny is 88 years young.😊❤
I am a 64 year old white guy who lives in WV and hunts squirrels. Johnny Mathis has the most beautiful voice ever put into a human being and I don't care at all about how he finds love. I am so grateful that I have lived in a time when I could hear him sing whenever I wanted and whatever joy he may find in life, I wish that earnestly for him. I sing a little and I have had no greater influence than him. I am so looking forward to hearing his new CD, and I hope he can make a dozen more. The world is so much better for his having been in it.
+Keith ellison agreed. I never thought such music could move me til i heard Mr. Mathis sing these to songs "More" and "All the Time" song 'I needed someone all the time'
If you enjoy killing squirrels so much that you list that as basically what you want to be identified as, you sound like you would be charming company on a world cruise! Murdering these charming, hapless, joyful, magnificent little creatures, while thrilling to their gruesome, twitching "death throws," and leaving their mates mateless, and their babies to starve to death, nauseates me to even contemplate.
Lord, Milton Moore, your ignorance is profoundly astonishing. Thrilling to their "death throws?" Leaving their babies to starve? Leaving their mates....(they are not monogamous creatures) Most wild life continues to exist because hunters have historically supported measures to protect them. When hunters are gone, wild life will not be far behind. Incidentally, I did not list that as my essential identity, but rather as a metaphor for being a homespun good old boy. Your ignorance apparently extends into areas of abstraction.
Milton Moore have you ever eaten meat of any kind? ALL animals that are butchered suffer far more in the slaughterhouses than a squirrel that is shot mercifully in the wild. You do realize that you eat corpses, carcasses and carrion unless you consume a plant- based diet, don't you?
His sexuality doesn't change who he is or what he does. His voice has been a comfort to me since I was a kid in the 70s and 80s. A true talent, and this is coming from a heavy rock/metal drummer. Even my old friend Philip Anselmo, the singer for Pantera, admires Johnny. Who in their right mind doesn't?
Johnny Mathis is by far the most humble man, even though he is a performer that I've ever seen. I too must add that I was best friends with my dad as well. He was my friend, my confidant and my navigator through my life ❤️❤️ I miss him everyday 🎶🎶 Johnny you're a wonderful artist 🎶🌹🎶
A man who demonstrates personal strength and an easy grace. He exudes a genuine sense of calm in a world where strident opposition to so many things is often the norm. In college I heard that Johnny Mathis was gay and some people expressed revulsion, but the majority basically said, "Who cares?" (How does that affect anything?)
we are what we are. I have loved him since I was sixteen and I am now 70 and I will always love him. Mostly I love that he has kept his personal life Personal.
ONE OF THE NICEST PEOPLE YOU 'D EVER MEET.....I USED TO FOLLOW JOHNNY ALL OVER NEW JERSERY WHERE HE PERFORMED SO MUCH.....JOHNNY ALWAYS GAVE HIS FANS THEIR MONEY'S WORTH AND THEN SOME.....NO NE CAN DENY HE HAD A VOICE THAT JUST DRIPPED WITH HONEY AND CONVEYED SO MUCH LOVE IN HIS PERFORMANCES......HE WAS AND IS TRULY ONE OF A KIND.......BOB FOX, PALM SPRINGS, CA. No one should judge others. I don’t care about your love life. You are now and always will be, the best singer in this world. I love your voice and your music.. God Bless you.
I became a fan of Johnny Mathis as a child at Christmas time. It wasn't Christmas without the wonderful music of Johnny Mathis. Of course, I loved all of John's music. I'm now a young 61 years old. I collected his music through the years. A few years back, I was finally about to see him live in concert. I must have seen him at least 6 times and every show was great. It didn't matter to me what the color of his skin was or his sexual orientation. It was something that I never even thought about. The highlight for me being a huge fan, was the last concert I had seen John. It was a Theater in the round. It was actually a large tent. It was called the Cape Cod Melody Tent. The performer would have to go down and up the stairs to go and leave the stage. The audience was on both side of the stairs. John would start the show and take a break. I happened to be where the stairs was. When he was taking his break and coming up the stairs, I held out my hand and John stopped and shook hands with me. He came back to finish the show and he was just wonderful. After multiple encores the band kept playing and the show came to an end. John came back up the stairs to go to the dressing room. Even though he was nice enough to stop once and shake my hand, he had seen me again standing there looking at him leaving. He turned around and once again shook my hand. I was in awe. I managed to get some words out, John, you put on a wonderful show. He gave me a big smile and said, thank you very much. A moment I shall never forget.
@Truthfears Guilty Just remember the people that Jesus Christ hung around with. He told his followers, 1Judge not, that ye be not judged. 2For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again. 3And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye? 4Or how wilt thou say to thy brother, Let me pull out the mote out of thine eye; and, behold, a beam isin thine own eye?
@Truthfears Guilty Just the Creator? No name? There has to be writings about the teachings of the Creator. Did he create all things? Did he create a man and a woman? People worship Satan. There's people that believe cows are sacred. You're being very vague.
He looks mixed, American Indian, East Indian, Black, a little Caucasian. He's very handsome. Very fine features. Of course, one of kind voice, which have not been duplicated.
He was definitely Indian. My father and him look like they could be related. We may be Latino but we have Indian blood in us aside from South American indigenous blood. I imagine he was short too 5'4. 🇮🇳
I shouldn't say "was" the man is still alive and still singing! 💜🙏🏼💜 I was off a couple inches. Mathis is 5'7. Like my father still has his hair! God bless him 88 and looking GR8!
Johnny didnt hide his orientation, he was just low key about it. For some reason I remember him singing some kind of love song on Johnny Carson and there was another man on the stage with him...and I remember thinking, "well, I guess he's gay, and he's singing to his lover". How genuine!
“He was my pal. I could tell him anything-and I did.” I feel like that’s a very eloquent way to describe coming out to his father. Johnny is a phenom and a treasure.
My mother told me that back in the day, he was skipping down Fifth Avenue. He grabbed a pole in front of one of the buildings, holding up the awning and swung around it. The white doorman said, "Get away from here n word. We don't allow your type over here." Johnny looked at him and said, "I own this building and YOU'RE fired!"
His orientation or otherwise makes absolutely no difference to me. His voice is why I am in awe of him. This guy is up there with the best that ever existed.
I just love his music. His sexuality should be a non-issue, but at the same time, I'm glad that he came out because it's important to recognize the importance of gay entertainers.
see i always thought the whole "singers should sing" "actors should act" notion is a little dehumanizing. Regardless of profession, which at the end of the day is just a job, people are human beings, first and foremost, and singers/actors/dancers second. Sexuality to me is more than just a sexual preference. it can be, as johnny mathis quoted, a "way of life". some gay people are proud of the rights they fought for and it has in of itself become its own culture. reducing it to a sex thing, or something to be taboo and not to be discussed, is extremely reductive. I'm glad he came out and I'm glad people are realizing that gay people have always been an important part of history, be it political leaders, revolutionaries, or even just singers. I don't have an opinion on the George Clooney thing but I do believe actors are humans first and have every right to express their own political feelings.
You are both correct. There was a song by Bruce Springsteen years ago that was named something like 57 channels and nothing's on. I feel we now have so many platforms to communicate we don't. Elvis once responded to a question about the Vietnam War by saying "I'm just an entertainer so I'd rather keep my opinions to myself." And George Clooney uses his celebrity status to bring causes important to him and feels comfortable doing it. I love Johnny Mathis because he's a great singer and was popular when people had a bit more class, manners, discretion and the ability to know if opinions differ, it's ok to agree to disagree. I've raised my children telling them, do your best to be happy and be interesting. I've always thought discretion and privacy are important. But being a gay person when Johnny Mathis was had to be tough and maybe he feels it's something he can reach many more people with people with that struggle with being gay or black in the 50's. I've also told my children you should not have the expectation that everyone will agree with you and that's ok.And if you feel strongly, debate, cajole, argue. But you aren't going to get everybody and that's ok. As a side note, I'm seeing him for the first time in a couple of weeks and can't.wait.
LOL +Bill Thompson ummmm NO being gay is most certainly not a choice of a Lifestyle. If sexual orientation was simply a choice then tell us when it was that you decided to 'become straight'. I have not ever met a gay person who told me that they one day decided to become gay nor choose to be gay.
"The Agenda" as in the 'gay agenda' a term which a few years ago was coined by several anti gay Christian organizations against gay people trying to have representation in the media and in other areas. I really don't like it when actors use the stage for their political point of views at all the award shows, that is distracting However, for gay people to hear from gay entertainers about their life struggles that makes them a Human being and shows the rest of the world that gay people can be anyone from a relative a friend to a favorite entertainer is very important and then you see either the tolerance or the hatred response i.e. as when singer/ actor Jim Nabors passed away recently there were many religious hate comments on his Inspirational song posts because since Nabors never mentioned publicly about being gay his religious music fans of fifty years suddenly finding out went nuts and threatened to burn all his records even though he was the same singer they enjoyed for fifty years THAT is why exposure is important.
One of the greatest singers this country ever produced. The thought that some would send death threats to him simply because his natural orientation is homosexual instead of heterosexual is hard to understand yet tragically true. Hating a man or woman because they're gay is like hating a man or woman for having blue eyes. For God's sake it's the 21st Century....get over it.
Always classy and a wonderful human being. Blessed with a fabulous voice. Loved him always! No matter what his sexual preference it doesn’t matter. Go Johnny!

@Darren Wiggins, I can't imagine
@@louise-yo7kz I can imagine.
That Christmas album where Johnny Mathis is wearing that sweater - everyone had a copy of that for goodness sake
He’s great. Love his Christmas album.
I actually can.
John gives his heart to us unconditionally in song and in his interviews. Still has "it". Beautiful man ,beautiful music. LOVE
JOHNNY Mathis is a class act. He is the greatest. So humble and blessed.
I always figured he was gay but that is none of our business. He is a good man with an absolutely fabulous voice. More power to you Mr. Mathis.
I hope he has Repented ! 🙏

He sucks big time.
You forgot about Nat King Cole.
I agree. His voice is in a single category of its own. Heavenly is one of my most treasured record albums. Now. What is the topic of this video about?
That is so true! Thank you! It’s true, that voice set him apart from any other singer. ❤️
Single category is so right Makes me cry
Arguably the greatest singer in the History of this world. And a very fine Human Being. I grew up with you on my Aunts Hi-fi. I love you. I am a great singer because of your influence. and as the guy said earlier, I'm glad to have been alive when you were here. Thank you!
Johnny Mathis is just a human being who happens to have an amazingly gifted voice. I couldn't care less what his gender affiliation is. What matters is that he is a great human being who has shared his beautiful gift with all of us. God Bless him.
Amen.🙏
Can't have Christmas without a couple of Johnny Mathis songs!
Greatest ever Christmas albums...no comparison
Johnny is a legend..........very underrated..........a true gentleman, a legendary talent.....
1:39 WOW !! To have a dad who you are so close to that you can tell him everything? Johnny was very lucky to have a father like that. 'Very unusual and exceptional...and the world is even luckier to have Johnny !!
Johnny mentions his dad a lot and is always positive in his statements. I like that.
I've loved this man and his music for 50 years. I have always played his music at Christmas and my children loved hearing him. It is no one business his private life. When he sings I have tears in my eyes because of his beautiful voice.
I've loved Johnny Mathis since I was a teenager. I'm nearly 70 now. His voice warms my heart.
Me too. I'm 75 and still in love.
I love how he talked about it without using the specific words. He is a man of his time.
In addition to his incredible voice, he has such an incredible spirit to go with it. I love this human.
My parents had his Christmas album when I was growing up. To this day, I decorate the tree with his album playing. Amazing voice.

I grew up around your music fell in and out of love and your music helped get through it all. Thanks Johnny
He should have said something earlier.I'm a black gay man that adore his music and saw him in concert years ago in New York with Dionne Warrick.
coach41 He definitely doesn’t look like he’s in his 80s, it’s insane.
I love Johnny Mathis. He is the best male singer, ever. I saw him a few years ago, and he still had the same magic that he has in his recordings. How many of you can sing the words to every song in "Johnny Greatest Hits?" A million, two million, three million?
Johnny Mathis is BEST singer during my lifetime.
Nobody else, only Johnny Mathis.
Too many "greats" to pick just one.
And, like Elvis, but in a different way, Johnny Mathis was crazy good looking! lol
I loved him then, I love him now...he taught my heart how to love!
Who cares?Judge the man on his talent, not his sexuality. One of the greatest singers the world has ever seen.
I do agree.
Just bumped into him in West Hollywood. He couldn’t have been kinder or more charming!!
I was able to send my Mom and younger brother to see Johnny Mathis in concert here in Florida years ago. They have since passed away. But Johnny made that night special for my Mom. For that I say Thankyou Johnny Mathis.
Puerto Rican little girl growing up with his music with my family listening to music back then it still sounds just the same today
Who cares? I grew up listening to his singing. It's part of the soundtrack of my life.
God when I listen to him sing it makes me feel like magic is real. It's so crazy seeing that he is just a man... His singing voice is pure magic.
Mathis sing these to songs "More" and "All the Time" song 'I needed someone all the time'
If you enjoy killing
squirrels so much
that you list
that as basically
what you want to
be identified as,
you sound like you would be charming company on a world cruise! Murdering these
charming, hapless,
joyful, magnificent
little creatures, while thrilling to their
gruesome, twitching "death throws," and leaving their
mates mateless,
and their babies to
starve to death,
nauseates me to
even contemplate.
Milton Moore grow up
He's the best of the rest. I still listen to him almost every day, since 1957, and see his concerts whenever he's in Florida. His life is his own.
Love his voice, and he is a gentleman...
Johnny Mathis, my favorite singer. Always and forever.
Hes always been a private man. I respect his way of life. He definitely loved his father.
It's a shame that he didn't become a father himself
Going to see him this year for the first time. When Americans had class, manners, discretion. I agree with Mr. Mathis and young people thank God.
Even at his current age his singing abilities are amazing

I just watched the video two minutes ago absolutely awesome. Johnny is 88 years old in that video.😊❤
ONE word defines him: Johnny Mathis,PERFECTION! What else?
Never so much as a peep of a scandal.
@petercox9,not anymore!
It’s odd how only gay performers are expected to keep their “personal life personal.”
I interviewed and met Johnny Mathis about 10 years ago. Total class act!

@Truthfears Guilty Who do you repent to then?
@Truthfears Guilty Just the Creator? No name? There has to be writings about the teachings of the Creator. Did he create all things? Did he create a man and a woman? People worship Satan. There's people that believe cows are sacred. You're being very vague.
@Truthfears GuiltyWell I'm not going to say anything negative to you. It isn't right to make fun of people that have mental health issues.
Johnny, out or in I love you and your very special God-given voice my mother loved you and loved your honesty: have a happy and long life

Johnny Mathis songs were the soundtrack of my early youth. Hope he stays with us a long time to come.
It never mattered to us who love him. So glad he's happy. Best vocalist in the world.❤
Johnny didnt hide his orientation, he was just low key about it. For some reason I remember him singing some kind of love song on Johnny Carson and there was another man on the stage with him...and I remember thinking, "well, I guess he's gay, and he's singing to his lover". How genuine!
“He was my pal. I could tell him anything-and I did.”
I feel like that’s a very eloquent way to describe coming out to his father. Johnny is a phenom and a treasure.
My mother told me that back in the day, he was skipping down Fifth Avenue. He grabbed a pole in front of one of the buildings, holding up the awning and swung around it.
The white doorman said, "Get away from here n word. We don't allow your type over here."
Johnny looked at him and said, "I own this building and YOU'RE fired!"
I grew up, listening to that beautiful voice. Hearing him sing, made my day much brighter. Thank you , so much Johnny!
I don't have an opinion on the George Clooney thing but I do believe actors are humans first and have every right to express their own political feelings.
that first thing you said was a great idea. you should definitely delete delete your comment and leave :)
I really don't like it when actors use the stage for their political point of views at all the award shows, that is distracting However, for gay people to hear from gay entertainers about their life struggles that makes them a Human being and shows the rest of the world that gay people can be anyone from a relative a friend to a favorite entertainer is very important and then you see either the tolerance or the hatred response
i.e. as when singer/ actor Jim Nabors passed away recently there were many religious hate comments on his Inspirational song posts because since Nabors never mentioned publicly about being gay his religious music fans of fifty years suddenly finding out went nuts and threatened to burn all his records even though he was the same singer they enjoyed for fifty years THAT is why exposure is important.
I saw a concert of his in St Louis. He sang all of those Christmas songs while reading the lyrics from a sheet. Never missed a beat.
From Belgium. We enjoy Johnny Mathis songs

It's not Johnny Mathis' private life, but rather his prodigious singing talent that should define him: he gave so much pleasure to his legion of fans all over the world!
