Can you please enable subtitles? (!!!) Edit: see the PS at the end, I found an AMV that does this: link at the end.
Even if it's just auto-generated I'd like to get an idea of what they're saying/ singing about. It makes a BIG difference in enriching the experience of the music and AMVs especially. It often takes your work to a whole new level.
This is a great AMV that really deserves it, I'm impressed and that isn't easy to do.
(Below I've written a buttload about AMVs and MEPs and why adding subtitles adds value so I hope that speaks for my experience, saying that I'm not just a "somebody with an opinion" but someone with the experience to back it up.)
Why add subs? You can see this in effect in some of the best AMVs and more often the best MEPs; where they incorporate the lyrics partly or completely into the MEP.
I've only rarely seen in done into AMVs though that makes sense as MEP literally stands for "Multiple Editor Project" so they have much more manpower as they're multiple people working on one video in contrast to AMVs who are almost always made by one person.
Though sometimes the amount of people working on the video is disregarded in favor of naming the video after the style, as AMVs and MEPs (tend to) have very different distinct styles with MEPs being heavily edited while AMVs are more a compilation of shots, though describing it that simply is doing discredit to great AMVs.
MEPs are also not always made from anime, manga is used for them as well. With a lot of editing to make the still images come to life and even move which is also a reason why I call them heavily edited, and I use that term in a positive way. The first time I saw a MEP -it was a very good one to my luck- I was absolutely and completely mind-blown.
I'm NOT saying that MEPs are better than AMVs though; they're just different and there are as many bad ones as good ones, if not more, compared to AMVs. Working with multiple people can be very challenging after all. Often you'll find the good ones only on channels that are completely dedicated to making them. Of course you have those for AMVs as well but not in that degree as anyone with some video editing knowledge can make an AMV, though that's also a reason that there are a lot more lackluster AMVs than MEPs if you compare it to the overall percentage being made.
Because AMVs are more than just editing video pieces together, how they work together with the music; getting the timing and the topic of the particular clip to the beat and meaning of the music is a very very hard thing to get right. Truly good AMVs are a beast and mind-blowing by themselves, and just like with MEPs you'll often only find them in dedicated channels. Though I have seen the occasional absolutely brilliant one being made by someone who doesn't usually make them and not realize how much of a beast they've created.
Cheers and good luck making more great AMVs!
PS: edit, I found an "AMV" that does exactly as I suggested with adding subtitles (if you turn them on, that is) and I'd like to use it as an example of what it adds to the experience. Here is the link: ruclips.net/video/9DkPwNA4q4E/видео.html
