  • Hi! Today I have a video showing you how I made this knitting loom. I have little experience in knitting and this is perfect for me to practice easy projects like scarfs and little blankets. I also made a needle for knitting on the loom.
I used wood from an old window frame and popsicle sticks, but you can use any wood you have on hands or want to buy. Each side has around 35 nails, and this is also something you can change and customize to your needs.
    ✏️ MATERIALS AND TOOLS
    For the loom:
    - Two pieces of wood for the frames (any size you want, mine is 40 cm long, and the width is around 4cm)
    - Popsicle stick or thin wood strips for spacing the frames
    - Nails ( I used around 70 nails, they are 3cm long)
    - Wood or PVA glue
    - Hammer
    - Drill or Dremmel
    - Drill bits
    - Sand paper
    For the needle:
    - A stick of wood
    - A nail
    - Epoxy glue
    - Small drill bits
    - Dremmel or drill
    - Cutting disc
    - Sand paper
    - Craft knife
I hope you enjoyed! Thanks for watching! 😉

My dad made me a big one to do rugs with 60 yrs ago. He used nails without the heads on them it worked great and you can get your yarn or fabric off so much better without snagging it on the nail heads.
But what ever works for you.

I just recently built one myself. Its adjustable and everything. 6ft long with a total of 448 pegs. I kept the nail heads on because the upper stitch would just slide right off and it would drive me nuts. I guess its personal preference. Currently making a blanket

Cotter pins make good pegs. You pull them apart a bit before installing them, then push the ends together while hammering them into the holes. Then your hook can get into each stitch.

Thank you so very much for your video! I found a pattern I loved today...calling for a knitting loom. I've used knitting needles for years so this is new to me. I have plenty of scrap wood and can't wait to make one. Thanks again for your video....have a great day! Dianne

I'm making a loom currently and I'm thinking when you cast on stitches if you skip 1 or 2 pegs between stitches, when finished knitting you can use your crochet hook to crochet the long yarn between stitches up the piece like a ladder to give a different effect. The same way of you drop a stitch knitting you can go down with your crochet hook and work it back to the top, so you skip stitches in purpose to have straight stretches of yarn you can ladder up on whichever side you want.. I hope they makes sense.. 👍👍

It's awesome. I just want to say that you used metal drill bits for wood. You wouldn't have had so much splintering around the holes if you had used wood drill bits. (Oh and you put the drill bit in skew so that caused wobbling and more splintering)

To keep the nails the same height, would it work if you put a plank of wood or smth on-top of the nails and hammer that till its all 2cm? And Ty for this I could not find the right one to buy and might make this.

Awesome, I'm wondering why you knitted in a zig zag instead of going down one side then up the other, you went across the loom each time, I'm wondering what different would that make, does it make your stitches farther apart meaning the piece will be larger than the loom when finished?

There are a few ways to get the depth more accurate on the screws for anyone who wants to make one of these. ^w^
Pilot hole: Mount a wooden dowel to the side of your drill with tape or a gear clamp or two (Depending on the drill or the clamps you find you may need a few clamps to get all the way around it but they will hold better then tape.) I would recommend using a wooden dowel over the tape as the tape gets damaged as you drill up to it and will slowly make your holes deeper, not that it's that bad but it also makes the process faster this way, just drill until the dowel stops you.
Nail depth: Find a metal or hardwood block that is the height you want your nails at and hold it next to the nail. Hammer them in until the hammer is hitting the block instead of the nail. Little bit tricky to hold the block and piece at once so you can also use a C clamp or something to assist you.
    Have fun and good crafting~

OK? How do you set the yarn on the loom to begin the first row? When you want to change the type of weave produced, how do you make those changes? How do you end the row so it will not unravel?

When I said nails without heads I meant they don't have the heads on like what you were using then having to cut them off. You know like the kind that they use to put baseboards on when they build houses, that way you don't have to cut the tops off the nails at the end. Can't think what the nails are called right now other then finishing nails. Sorry if I didn't explain my self better! Not disrespecting your video, just telling you how my dad made mine.

Not for everyone. I've been knitting for over 20 years now, but my arthritis is getting worse. When it acts up, I have no choice but to set my knitting needles down, sometimes for months. It took over a year to complete my last sweater (when my hands felt up to it, I gave priority to working on projects I was giving as gifts rather than what I was making for myself). With a loom like that, my hands & neck wouldn't need to be in as painful a position as they are when I use needles. That alone would make my projects move faster. Not everyone who enjoys knitting can still hold the needles the way we used to, that shouldn't mean we need to give up our crafting.
