I have no children to share it with, but I can tell others though, that I was both alive and young for the first Beatles release, and alive and old for their last. I've been sitting in a pile of emotions today, listening to every one of their singles from "My Bonnie" right up to "Now and Then". I think the only ones I didn't find on Spotify were "The Beatles' Movie Medley" (1982) and "Christmas Time (Is Here Again)" 1995.

I've brought up my kids on Beatles music and now my grandkids. I would have been ecstatic if Now and Then was an upbeat song (She Loves You, I Want to Hold Your Hand, etc.), but this was such a fitting tribute to all of them.
I've listened to it a few times now and it makes me wonder what could have been if John and George were still with us.

Beautifully done David. It was the early 60’s and one of my friends came over with a 45-rpm with four songs on it. Two on each side.
He said his aunt in England sent it to him saying, “This new rock group, called The Beatles is all the rage in Europe!” The record had “Please Please Me”, “Love Me Do”, “I Want To Hold Your Hand” and “She Loves You”. We were mesmerized and played that record over and over for days! I grew my hair long and bought and sang along with every Beatles song ever since.
    Their music shall survive.

Honestly, The Beatles became the parents of a very much a simple but detailed clever art that impressed how far it could be taken from it's influences and has successfully influenced much of music after their times of work. That being said, I like the naturally very darker chilled sound of The Rolling Stones and also The Doors. Still said, The Beatles are the greatest at any of the geniuses.

I saw Paul McCartney play this in concert in Brisbane just 2 days ago (1st Nov '23) - Paul and his band live with John's Lyrics and George's guitar recorded.
Through some AI jiggery-pokery and for the benefit of the giant screens on stage, they managed to sync John's vocals to lots of old footage of him singing, from early B&W stuff to the Rooftop gig.
So yeah, that's something I have experienced that didn't *really* happen. And I consider myself quite privileged that I got to see it not happening, just about as live as it could possibly have been, before the rest of the world got to hear it. A pretty special moment, really!

From the LA Times review: "It’s a passage where Lennon’s yearning for McCartney intertwines with Paul’s mourning for John, a shared grieving for the partnership that defined both their lives."
This captures the emotional content from Paul’s point of view and possibly John’s. According to Linda, the last thing John ever said to Paul was “think of me now and then, my old friend”. Get new song!

With all due respect to the Beatles and despite being a big fan of the band. But I found the current version to be a cut of many things, an attempt for a breathless old Paul to sing with John's younger voice. The removal of the part I don't want to lose you. Where is George? Because that first guitar solo at 2:27 is definitely Paul and not George. This guitar is definitely George 3:37. Perhaps this was his contribution to the anthology version. Anyway, I think there was a mix of a lot of information and three versions: John's demo, some anthology reminiscences at the end and a mix of Paul solo with his current voice. In this part 2:27 to 3:10, anyone who listens to John's demo version realizes that the rhythm of the song is not that, here it was a very strange mix with because a cappella in the background. My impressions. How I would have liked to have seen this version at the time of the anthology. Why did they remove I don't want to lose you why why.
Well, Nice critics and rewiews yous. Congratulations from Brazil.

haunting song but very Beatles. I love Jeff Lynne but can Paul do a similar job on Free As A Bird and Real Love? Love the songs but I was disappointed at the time they sounded more ELO than Beatles. A remix would be great!

I was born 2 years after John Lennon's death and had only just graduated from high school when my favorite Beatle passed away, and yet I am now witnessing a true Beatles reunion! I teared up so much during the documentary the Beatles channel released. It was so touching seeing John and George reunited after death with Paul and Ringo. And the song actually turned out really nice after all this time!

The Beatles and their music are wonderful proof of how countless people from different cultures and languages, of different ages and genders, can be on the same wavelength and love the same thing. I think it's so great when I read all the positive comments under Beatles videos, like here!

Incredible video ! I love the new song , but I do miss the original middle 8 / bridge section which I thought was a great key change that was a great lift , but now the chorus modulates down which is quite interesting. I’d still love to hear a version which includes that section instead of it just being the solo.

Unlike Pink Floyd or some other bands that had all their surviving members until recently, the remaining Beatles weren't too precious about it to give a chance and finish a recording that was made in the 70's, that wasn't supposed to be a Beatles track, with guitar tracks leftover from the 90's. All of these without appearing desperates or out of touch. They just did it.
Meanwhile Roger Waters and David Gilmour are being petty. Bill Ward refused to appear on the great last Black Sabbath album. The last Led Zepellin members could do so much yet. The list goes on.

I've said for a long time that The Beatles will be one of the few cultural artifacts that people thousands of years from now will still listen to or be made aware of. We like to think that what we do will be remembered, but the truth is we won't be. Shakespeare, Beethoven, and Michelangelo are good examples of what we can expect for The Beatles in terms of cultural memory centuries from now. The rest of us should learn to let go, forget about posterity, and just enjoy the ride.

Thinking about people in the future, a 1000 years from now or further, they could still be listening to The Beatles. On one hand you could say, people will get smarter and music may be a lot different, but they could also have lost touch with what it is to be human and feel emotions, and The Beatles music could be the kind of thing that people of the future will come back to because of that. It is also the beginning really of recorded music so for historians and people that are interested in music in the future will likely still be interested to see how things were now and then

The excitment generated by Now and Then reminds me of similar feelings which accompanied the release of each ground-breaking Beatles album during the 1960's. Pushing the barriers then and now.

If there’s one thing in music that AI has a place in, it is sound isolation and de-noising. What a fantastic tool we have in that regard. It was able to recover a shoddily recorded demo and aid in bringing it to fruition. Though, we must be careful never to use AI in the place of the SOUL. The art suffers.

At timestamp 6:40, when you posited whether people will listen to recorded music many years from now, the answer is a resounding yes! Humans appreciate any art that generates strong emotions, and will continue to do so generations from now because emotions arose from hundreds and hundreds of thousands of years of evolution and natural selection, because emotions allowed us to thrive in our environments by connecting and cooperation that required emotions. The nature of our brains respond to stimuli and create emotions hasn't changed for thousands of years, and won't change for another several thousand years because evolution requires generations in the order of thousands of magnitudes. With that being said, The Beatles mastered the art of eliciting emotions through brilliant songwriting and will continue to inspire people regardless of age and generation because of their use of timeless techniques. Those techniques will be discussed in a future research project release called SongMatrix by Wayne Chase!

Yeah. Like, I doubt most people will know many Beatles songs, but I wouldn't be surprised if in a few hundred years a few songs like Yesterday and Let It Be are relatively popular. Most people don't listen to Beethoven often, but most have heard several of his compositions. I expect it to be somewhat similar to that, but a bit less so.

Impossible to predict the future. New forms of entertainment will arise that would seem alien to us, but to future humans our music will seem like cave drawings. We like to imagine that the things we like will stand the test of time, but how many people still get touched by the ancient Roman art of scansion?
It’s both sad, and exciting. Makes our little bubble of time unique.

    • @SongSecretsMomNeverTaughtYou
      @SongSecretsMomNeverTaughtYou 11 месяцев назад +2

@svenmify scansion is a tool for writing metrical verse and poetry, not really a form of art or entertainment as it's own. It's a "building block" of how lyrics become attached to music, which has been around in very ancient civilizations (also in Gaelic, but not limited to them. Every culture that ever existed has development with rhythm, spoken word, and singing), and music will continue to exist as long as we continue to be wired to recognize pitch, rhythm, and language... which like I said will be for thousands of years to come.

How good a songwriter was John Lennon? The fact that "Free As a Bird," "Real Love," and "Now and Then" were all on the same demo tape is ridiculous. Most songwriters would be thrilled to write one song as good as any of those in their career. "Now and Then" is probably my least favorite of the three, but that's only because I adore the other two. It's still pretty great. That move to the major VI chord after toggling between the i and v is so satisfying. At least, I think that's the chord progression. I haven't sat down with a guitar, so I'm just going by ear. It may actually be i, VII6, i, VII6, i, IV. It amounts to the same thing though.

Free As A Bird was distracting having his voice come in only to be muted as soon as the line was sung.

They took out a bridge section that was present in the original demo and fan mix. The “I don’t want to lose you” part. I loved that section and it gave the song much needed dimension and an emotional depth. Bummer that they nixed it. I may prefer the fan mix a tiny bit more because of this. I am still stoked about the finished version, I just wish they’d have kept that wonderful piece of the song and I can’t unhear it.

Respectfully disagree. When I heard that bridge in the demo, I thought it sounded gaudy and was worried it would ruin the song. Some things just wouldn’t translate well in the context of an ensemble, and I was relieved when they nixed it. They made the most tasteful possible choices in the final mix given the limited source materials, and I suspect John would have been okay with the omission.

    • @sigurdkaputnik7022
      @sigurdkaputnik7022 11 месяцев назад +2

Agree. They should have left that "I dont want to lose you"-part in. The keychange is weird, but provides a different angle. Paul is a creative guy, he could have found a way to seamlessly integrate this in the rest of the song. Btw weird keychanges are totally John's thing. Leaving that out is kinda softening the edges.

    will love you
    now and then
    I miss you
    oh now and then

I remember as a kid in about grade 4 when John Lennon died, I was just old enough to realise what a historical moment and a tradgedy it was.
Then for the next year or so he had a bunch of hits on the pop charts because he'd just been back recording again and Milk and Honey came out posthumously.
There were some great songs like Nobody told me, that weren't hits out of nostalgia, they were just great songs that received constant radio play.
It was like, cool John's back!
    Except he wasn't.
Knowing he had so much more great music still to give us just made his death so much more tragic.

It's as much a technological achievement as it is a new Beatles song, and a very good one in my opinion. As a young fan, I'm happy to have experienced the release of a new Beatles track in my lifetime.
I like that they put the 1962 single version of "Love Me Do" as the B-side. The last Beatles single juxtaposed with their first.
Even with two of them gone, their legacy still endures.
