He made a Bendix. I once made a lathe out of an old record player motor and used that to make small chess pieces for a small chess board I made in middle school. A bendix is indeed used all around the world. Among its uses are pipe-bending and for tying fencing to posts and many other things.

I used cut up pieces of coat hanger for the tools and sharpened them with a file. pieces of dowel with a small hole drilled in them so I could tap them onto the motor's spindle became the chess pieces. To finish shaping the pieces other than the pawns and the queens I used a hack saw blade and pocket knife. Black walnut and maple stains and a light coat of polyurethane spray and they didn't look half bad.

This would be made even better if one of the hooks was pitched at a 45 degree angle but still maintained its alignment with the other so you could wrap the wire evenly! The welds were the best part. I have never seen such clean welding before!

I’d change the design a little bit. Eliminate the u-shape piece replacing it with a straight piece across then weld another straight piece across at the top of the bend in the u-shape then weld the long hand on the backside that eliminates cutting the tac weld pieces at the top. In doing it this way eliminates all this second operation work and you don’t have to waste time lining up the piece of rebar you want to bend on either side , just slap it in and bend your done.

Wait. He's only using the rebar on the sides to make the bends. It limits what size rebat he can actually bend. Just weld a piece of rebar to connect those two pieces. Then you have something you can use more sizes.
That's a cool homemade tool and all, but bending tools have been in existence for hundreds of years. Tools meant to Bend rebar specifically have been in use for well over a century.

That's a cool homemade tool and all, but bending tools have been in existence for hundreds of years. Tools meant to Bend rebar specifically have been in use for well over a century.

I bend the wire with my hands. Gets tiring though so I just use vise grips. They make a sharper bend
