When I took a fema course twenty years ago on swift water rescue techniques, they had a huge amount of stories about people getting killed and worse by z drag or towing something. Line breaks and snap , it’s a rocket on a string. The number one thing I have told people since then, that almost no one does, is put a small weight on the tow line. We used wet life jackets or the like. If the line breaks it pivots up and away instead of straight at your head. Good subject to cover, there’s a lot of gaps in my knowledge and equipment in this regard. It’s also the first time I found out fema was a military subcontractor and it had military grade weapons but no food or water. 🤔👍

Hardcore dudes who lived in their vans to have more extreme sports time. It was twenty years ago so the quote might not be exact, but close.

Thanks!!! I have a winch on my truck camper. I've never had to use it, but I've spent some time researching how to do so safely. This is the first time I've heard someone say to get rid of the metal parts on the winch line. It makes complete sense. I'm going to make that change ASAP.

Probably the only point I disagree with is using one rope for the bridle. I use 2 8 foot straps. For one, if one strap breaks, you are still connected. For another thing, if you are pulling someone out, having 2 straps, you have to pull both sides equally. With one rope, you can still have the easier side jump forward. Pulling any side motion makes the pull harder.
Brother i don't even do this crazy shit like you guys do..but i watched the entire video and i really did learn alot especially what not to do...great video thanks Richie

I live in mud country and we use tow ropes that can pull out semi trucks and I prefer steel cable and also use heavy chains if needed. I have been stuck so many times and nobody will ever rescue me because they think I'm nuts. Never had to get a tow truck to pull me out of the mud, it's usually some guy in a half ton that not scared to pull a heavy truck out of the mud. I'm old now and I hate getting muddy and wet and have to walk back to town or sleeping in my truck overnight because I was to loaded to think straight 🤠

Synthetic rope instead of a chain makes sense. Not something I would have thought of.
Also, I used to watch this "Highway Through Hell" show about heavy rescue tow trucks in Canada. The kind that rescue crashed semis out of the remote Canadian mountains.
They talked a lot about the dangers of lines snapping but never mentioned that a lot of the time it flies straight backward. Better to know this than to end up cut in half or severely brain-damaged from a blow to the head.

I was up at Silver Lake Michigan when there was a doombuggy pulling another dunebuggy right in front of us and they were using stretchy bungee cords LOL Every time they would start to pull away all 3 of us in our pickup truck would cringe and turn our heads and then it happened .... The driver didn't Relieve the slack and snap it nailed them right through the windshield into his forehead He got out and he saw the look on my face as I grabbed them and tried to get him into The dune store He turned and looked at me half unconscious and said does it look bad First thing I said was don't look in the mirror he had a gouge from 2 inches above his hairline to the top of his nose and it split about 3 inches across and you could see the muscles in his forehead Damn
This video is long overdue. Thanks Richy. I used to drive a tow truck and did a lot of recovery, but never had any training like this. I was always concerned that the cable or straps would break.

I have a couple different length Bubba tow straps in my Tacoma that I got from a wrecker friend, they look good I don’t think they’ve been used much in good shape and pretty clean. My Warn winch has cable it came with.

JFI, snagged a 1 ton duramax out of ditch, buried in snow up to top of bumper, mid hood. Yankum rope, 4-5 pops...took a bit to pop on road, matt tracks is not relevant...was 2 5/16" tl ball to ball...

Awesome video and information. Question....is a kinetic rope what we used to call a snatch rope or strap back in the day? They had lots of stretch and the recoil was actually what did all the work?
There's no doubt (probably) that twine rope has saved lives since it's introduction into the winching/offroading world in terms of the snap-back issue inherent in steel cable setups.
But I don't believe that is because twine is a safer alternative to steel cable as much as it is due to the fact that there are sooo many new people who have begun off roading. And they do not take the time to learn the proper use and maintenance of steel recovery gear.
Twine has a greatly reduced shelf/working life compared to steel cable. (it's also twice the price and requires more safety efforts imo but that's another discussion)
So (respectfully btw) when he says he want's gear to not fail while making his entire system revolve around twine - which will fail - it just comes across weird.
I mean, would you want the twine to snap and lose the winch target?
Alot of hypothetical scenarios miss out on the fact that there is a multi-ton vehicle on the other end of that twine (which could be your own) that becomes an out of control entity of deadly consequences when the twine gives up - rolling uncontrolled off the side of the mountain or back down the hill. Or God forbid into and over someone.
But that's the risk being taken using twine until it inevitably breaks. Which seems to be what most consider a good thing??
It is a guessing game with too much risk in my humble opinion.
The important thing is - and in agreement with his statement - that a twine system must not make use of steel anywhere in it. But that doesn't address the inevitable failure of it.
Just as true is no steel system should rely on twine anywhere in the system. And also true steel cable can break. But the MTBF (meantime between failure) values between the two are miles apart. And steel cable can be easily evaluated over time to prevent such a failure. Not so much for twine, especially when encased in protective material.
I don't think the idea that twine is a consumable is emphasized enough. They lose strength and shelf life with every pull.
I don't rock crawl but I do off road in very rocky areas and conditions. Twine would never stand up to the abrasion and sharp edges my cable sometimes has to endure to get the job done.
Just my thoughts from experience.

Why not make the bridle by having the tree saver go from 1 D-ring to the other, and then connect the soft shackle to the middle? Each side is only carrying ~half the load, effectively doubling the working load of the tree saver.

Done a lotl of riging common sense would say the speed and dead stop method is just completely stupid especially if you want to damage a bunch of s***on your vehicle and the other truck
Do people really drive like that with these toe straps hooked up? Looks like they're doing it on purpose which is probably just a test run type setup but I can't imagine an idiot trying to drive like that with one of those straps. That guy has such a little brain taking him out is not all that bad an idea.
I don't own a kinetic rope and never will. I use the winch or tensioned up tow strap. I don't like the variables in kinetic recovery, nor do I like the amount of trust you have to put in another person. I think most people don't know how to use them "safely."

There is a video of a guy who had his whole bottom jaw blown off from a winching accident. It was really hard to watch but as far I know he survived (somehow). It reminded me of that video of the jeep in the beginning with the driver side windshield blown out. Might have been the same video.
