Funny that Phil said about hitting pause and play at our leisure. Sometimes it takes me all day to listen to the show Because I always pause when I will be distracted and I don’t want to miss anything lol. Always so sad when it’s over and can’t wait for the next one. You guys are the best show on RUclips!!
I've met Brad a couple times and have enjoyed all his contributions on his channels and the BIC podcast and he always strikes me as one of the most genuine, honest and friendliest dudes in the hobby who also happens to have some pretty epic stories. Would love to see him on here more frequently
Great episode Gongboys! Kudos to Brad for coming on the show. And especially thanks Phil for asking tough questions and not being a suck up haha. Some things were cleared up others not so much. Last year, a former grader on a well known podcast stated the "best" guys (i.e. fastest) graded a card in 30-60 seconds. Lol! No wonder the grades are all over the board. Nice job!
Thanks for including a dash of vintage in your coverage of current auctions. Your lineup of guests have been real bangers lately and Brad certainly provided some honest answers and insights today. Thanks boyz!!
I remember MacKinnon really struggling early on with some really bad Avs teams. Only had 14 goals his second year and 16 in his fourth and it got to him mentally for sure. His breakout year didn’t come until the fifth year and now he’s unstoppable. Hoping all these young guys exceed expectations!
It's always good to hear from representatives of companies we use as hobbyists. Brad is a great guy and we appreciate his willingness to come on the show and answer our questions.
Also Lewi, love your cards man. Awesome. That same Federov was one of my first big pulls too. I found my cards 2 years ago and relit my passion (quit collecting in 95). Also, growing up i knew Brendan Morrow who sat beside Modano as a rookie in the locker. Brendans first check was like $25k US for half month pay (alot of money for him). He was blown away. They used to put the cheque in their lockers. Modano opens his and apparently Morrow rubber necked and had a peek. Like $220k US or something crazy like that haha. This was a story around town anyways where his brother Jeremy and his parents still lived. Morrow ended up marying Guy Carbaneau's daught and did alright in the end.
Great show loved the segment with Brad. To answer the when did the hobby get sweeped up with Bedard it was when he was granted exceptional status in whatever league at 5 years old (I think 15 actually) and then scored at record breaking pace with Regina Being granted exceptional status is the first hobby alarm for any player McDavid received it as did tavares, Sean day Joe veleno Ekblad and you can look at Shane wright and the hype he had on the hobby for the same reason
I think it's great that Brad was willing to come on the show and talk about his company. We may not agree with their practices but I assure you that Brad is a genuine guy and believes in what they are doing.
I totally understand and agree. I dont grade cards so I have no horse in the race. I see it more as a fun topic/ taking point that draws attention to the hobby. Kind of like the ct scanning “debacle”
Another great show, guys. I too don't like to be upcharged by PSA, but I understand their rationale. Comment to Phil......maybe not a precious analogy, but consider auto insurance for a Ferrari would be way more money than on a honda civic, even if both cars are driven by the same driver.
The up charge does lack integrity as Phil says. PSA will make more money if they give a card a 10, thus they are incentivized to give out more 10s. Hard to argue this point. Great show as always!
I’m sorry, But inconsistency in grading by PSA as Phil stated, was tiptoed around as an answer in my opinion. It shouldn’t matter how many cards you grade, or any other factor of not being perfect. your being paid to provide a service and unfortunately the price difference in the market place between grades is far to large for them to be having “mistakes”
Really enjoy the listen guys. Question though, PSA always applauds their volume of cards graded, does it concern anyone? 1.5 million cards a month… even with 500 graders thats a card every 5 minutes working 8 hour days everyday of the month, start to finish in holder with label.
For older cards I completely agree that authentication is necessary to avoid fakes, but I have to disagree with Brad on turn around time and cost being the most important factors for someone submitting modern cards. How many stories have we heard of someone cracking a 7 or 8 or 9 and resubmitting it and getting a 10? Without grader's notes (or sub grades like BGS), then PSA will always, at least in my mind, be a high end crap shoot; The card may be a 6 or it may be a 10, but either way you will get no explanation. If PSA can provide notes, then i really don't think people would mind paying a little extra or waiting a little longer because, like Phil nailed 100%, the people who care about the cards will be patient and content while the people who care about the profits will be impatient and annoyed. also, the argument for upcharging doesn't make any sense. PSA is not the reason the card is a 10- the card is the reason it's a 10, so why should they get more money when they do the same thing for a 10 that they do for a 1?
2:21:17 - Phil with all due respect, I would argue that NCAA D1 is better, tougher, faster hockey than the CHL. Especially the Dub. Many of the players are 21 or 22 vs 17 or 18. Not saying Bedard is too hyped, I think he's simply sophomore slumping but still the CHL isn't what it was when Sid and McJesus played
celebrini and michkov are already better and more complete players than bedard..bedard is lucky he was in a "weaker" rookie class, he wouldn't win the calder this year

Appreciate your kind words Sebby so much.
This ^^^ plus 2 shows per!!! Friday night w/phil
You guys produce the best hockey card content out there. I look forward to watching every week !!
Thank you...very much appreciated.

That's our plan. We have so many more questions to ask and want to hear his stories too
@1:19:52 preach Phil

30 to 60 seconds seems to quick doesn't it?

We'll always include something vintage related in every show :)
Great interview with Brad from PSA A must watch for every collector. Great job Josh and Louis!
👀
Happy you enjoyed.
I’m starting to love you guys, keep your sticks on the ice🎉
Appreciate that very much. Thanks for the support!
Great show once again guys 🍻
Thank you! Appreciate that.

100%, we don't root for anyone to fail. Great comparison with Mackinnon
Idea for a new segment. Now that the 3 of you all showed your top 5 PC cards. How about each of your top 5 wish list cards?
Great idea!
Very interesting to have Brad's imput!

Great story...yeah $220k was a lot of cash back then...still is!
1:04:16 "Charalizard" lol how dare he disrespect Charizard like that. In all seriousness great discussion/episode!
hahahahahaha....I kinda thought that was funny.
Brad the card collector is fun to talk cards with .
Agree 100%
Great show loved the segment with Brad.

Good point, thanks for the kind words too!
So if I work for psa long enough and start to make good money, maybe I would be able to defend their practices as well.

Missing the chapter breaks for this episode, hopefully it's just this episode as they are super handy
They are in the description and are now showing up for some reason. We have no idea why...frustrating.

Not a bad analogy. I thought of hotel rooms last night that magically go up in rate on weekends and holidays.
The up charge does lack integrity as Phil says. PSA will make more money if they give a card a 10, thus they are incentivized to give out more 10s. Hard to argue this point.
Great show as always!
Yeah, that's a tough line to walk
Verdin here in Winnipeg
Ahh...good to know!
I’m sorry,

I believe A.I. should be grading cards.
Appreciate you chiming in with your thoughts and adding to the conversation.

Yeah, it's a mind-boggling number for sure.
For older cards I completely agree that authentication is necessary to avoid fakes, but I have to disagree with Brad on turn around time and cost being the most important factors for someone submitting modern cards. The coach or whatever in the "Debater's" team photo, totally looks like J.P. from Grandma's Boy lmao
Totally see the connection lol
The question is for the rest of 2024-25 products are they going to be crazy high like 23-24 or will they be reasonable.
From the presales we've seen they should be much more reasonable...thankfully
Michkov always has been better than bedard, that should surprise no one. Celebrini might also be.
It'll be interesting to see how it shakes out.
send them to me! i bring stuff all the time across. i live righton the border. so i bring stuff for my dad all the time.
hobby mule :)
I always thought you pronounced Frank Neighbor as Frank N-AY-bur, the person that lives next to you.
Huh....we'll have to look that up. Thanks!
PETG = Polyethylene Terephthalate Glycol
That's a lot of big words lol.....but thank you. I like Acetate better hahahaha
Bedard is in his Sophomore slump at 19...I have no doubt he'll be winning trophies when hes 24+
That would be great....not rooting against him at all.
@hockeycardsgongshow can you guys speculate on Bedards output every show please?! Maybe he'll get 3 points every time ! 😆
I don’t believe brad is right. I’d pay for graders notes esp a 10
It's hard to argue what he sees but I agree it feels like more would love graders notes. I certainly would!
celebrini and michkov are already better and more complete players than bedard..bedard is lucky he was in a "weaker" rookie class, he wouldn't win the calder this year
Bedard will be fine... he's 19 and plays on a terrible team
had a good game last night!
