  • Osteopath or Chiropractor - one of the most frequent question I'm asked as an Osteopath.
"What is the Difference between an Osteopath and Chiropractor?"
Looking at the treatments offered by Osteopathy vs Chiropractic. There are as many similarities as differences between the two professions. Differences, when they occur, can be found not only between the professions but equally between practitioners of the same profession.
Which is better - osteopath or chiropractor? A question that is so often asked.
    Osteopath or Chiropractor
Chiropractors focus mostly on spinal integrity, using x-rays of the spine to form a diagnosis: osteopaths use palpation (touch) of soft tissues (muscles, ligaments and tendons) and spinal positioning in conjunction with overall postural balance to form a diagnosis
    Osteopath v Chiropractor
Chiropractors work mainly on the spine; osteopaths work on the spine but also on the whole body, including peripheral joints.
Chiropractors use more manipulative techniques; osteopaths may use manipulation in conjunction with soft tissue and mobilisation (stretching of joints) techniques
    What is an osteopath
Osteopathy is a validated, regulated and increasingly researched medical therapy which aims to address pain and other symptoms caused by a range of disorders including those incurred in the workplace, the sporting world and during pregnancy as well as general lifestyle related conditions.
    What is Osteopathy
Osteopathy involves the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of a variety of muscle, joint and skeletal conditions, and where possible without the need for surgery or drugs. Instead, an Osteopath restores your body’s natural functions using hands-on techniques.
Through these non-invasive methods and by working closely with your lifestyle, I can help minimise or even resolve your symptoms and improve your overall health.
The Difference between an Osteopath and Chiropractor.
Wikipedia gives a useful definition "Practitioners may distinguish these competing approaches through claims that, compared to other therapists, chiropractors heavily emphasise spinal manipulation, tend to use firmer manipulative techniques, and promote maintenance care; that osteopaths use a wider variety of treatment procedures; and that physical therapists emphasise machinery and exercise."
    Visiting an osteopath.
On the first visit I will take a detailed case history including a full medical history. I will ask about your symptoms, health problems and any medical care you have been receiving. Then, depending on the location of the problem I will usually want to make a full examination of the spine or the region where there is pain. This may involve undressing to your underwear or you can wear shorts and a T-shirt if you prefer.
    Bringing Someone Along
You are welcome to bring a friend or relative with you into the treatment room if it makes you feel more comfortable. Please note that the case history taking and examination will take up most of the time on the first visit (a short initial treatment is included in the Consultation).
    Diagnosis and Proposed Osteopathic Treatment
At the end of the first consultation/examination a detailed explanation of the diagnosis and proposed treatment will be given to you. Please do not hesitate to ask any questions about anything that you do not understand about the proposed treatment.
