    And also, before the Mulan animated version was even released, China released its own live action version around the 70s-early 90s around there. It actually told that version, along with showing a more blunt side linguistically speaking. It was pretty good when I saw it :). I recommend it :).

    Haha, i am amused by your understanding that “Mulan buys one thing in the south, the other thing in the north.....” In fact, as a Chinese who studied this poem in my middle school, i want to say the ole traditional Chinese cannot be translated in the modern way as the modern Chinese. You cannot translate word by word, in fact it’s a kind of special expression usage which means “in order to buy all she wants, Mulan made great effort by going all places she can to look for those items”, but not “buy exactly item 1 in place A, item 2 in place B.”

  • @rekavarga1584
    @rekavarga1584 7 лет назад +1331

    I think I know, why Mulan bought the stuffs from different markets.
    In China (and several other east countries) the directions got 1 animal:
    The black turtle of the north
    The red bird of the south
    The blue dragon of the east
    And the white tiger of the west.
    In my opinion, the reason why she bought stuffs from different directions, is because she tought, the four guardians will protect her
    Edit: this comment didn’t age well.

    • @emptyricebowl

    • @tomxu1890
      @tomxu1890 7 лет назад +77

      That is an good explanation! But as a Chinese, I think that is not the reason though. The reason why all four directions were all mentioned was simply for the lines to rhyme with each other, it's a song after all...

      @powertoallexcepthaters7975 6 лет назад +21

      Actually, we studied the ballad in school, and it was simply to emphasize how far she had to go and how determined she had to be to be prepared for war. That was a good theory though, sorry for debunking it...maybe you’re still right, but that’s what my teacher said

    The idea of the hares is that if you lift up a female hair by it's ears, it will freeze in terror. The male hare, however, will struggle. When they run there is no difference. The idea of multiple markets was to cover her tracks according to my calligraphy teacher, even though there are few proper settled markets set up around that time (most permanent markets come up around the Song). By the way, "10 000" can also simply be used to mean 'a lot'

    Why does everybody (lgbtq+) want her to be a transgender or a lesbian? Why not just let her be a tomboy?
    A tomboy is a woman/lady that has masculine aspects and likes things that are stereotypically associated with men/boys, but is still sexually attracted to men/boys. She can also have a masculine appears, but doesn't necessary have to.
    I actually prefer tomboys over what society and traditional norms (stereotypes) says a lady ought to be. To me, a more is than just a phase; it's a permanent lifestyle and choice. So this is the kind of lady I desire for me.
    Great video. Keep up the good work.

      +Danandbands, I always disliked when people interpret her like that because I wanted to see myself in her. I wasn't lesbian but I'd act and dress as a boy lol. I also dislike the idea that the way someone acts means you know what their sexuality is. Gives room to stereotyping.

    • @Meggsie
      @Meggsie 7 лет назад +239

      Idk if I'd go so far as to say she was a tomboy, although nothing was wrong with it. She wanted to be the perfect version of femininity, she didn't protest to the cultural expectations of her- she just wasn't good at it. She chose to join the army not because she preferred swinging a sword or doing masculine things(She is actually disgusted by the habits of men)- she did it to save her father. She had selfless motivation in the sense she wasn't seeking out to be her "true self" but to risk everything she cared about and her own well being to protect her father and all of China.
      Merida, I would say, is very much a tomboy.

      To a chinese person, going to war without getting your parent's blessing is unthinkable. So while Disney's mulan is a good american story, it's not a chinese story. It's a valley girl in chinese costume. That would be like if Japan made a movie about Jesus where he is a used car salesman. I'm sure no Christians would complain about a movie that completely misrepresents christianity and christian culture. Clearly Disney just thought "how do we tap into chinese audience and make more money?" Instead of "How do we make a movie about a strong woman that saves a country and educate the public about another culture accurately?"

    • @woolfel
      @woolfel 7 лет назад +12

      no, it's not a children's version of Mulan story. It's a valley girl version of an american story. Replace Mulan with Jennifer and the setting with Los Angeles, then it would be culturally accurate. To say it's mulan is just ignorant. How about this, make a movie call "life of george washington" where George is a pirate that over throws the queen of england and rules north america as a king. Would that qualify as "children's version of george washington?" I definitely would call that version of george washington stupid, inaccurate and total garbage.

    Y’all are really trying to argue that Mulan is a lgbtq? 💀💀 I’m bi , and I can tell you now that she’s not part of it AT ALL . The only reason she dressed as a male was to protect her father and fight in the war if the army allowed women in 10000000% sure she wouldn’t have dressed as a man . And yes , there is a problem with lgbtq people trying to make straight characters gay , if you want representation that bad make a damn character yourself 🤦🏽‍♀️ .

    Mulan was likely from ethnic xianbei origin, an already extincted warrior ethnicity in norhern China. Hua(flower) was a common xianbei surname. Mulan was from Northern Wei Dynasty, the ruling class of the dynasty was from the Tuoba branch of xianbei,that was why the emperor was referred to as "khan". During that time, ethnic groups in the central plains were separated into different classes,the xianbeis were classified as the military class, which means whenever wars occured they were the ones to be sent to the frontlines to fight, all able-bodied xianbei men were identified as professional soldiers who were issued with armors,weapons and were required to be professional in martial skills like spear fighting,horseriding and archery, and they were required to pass down these weapons and skills to their male descendants generation after generation.

    About that "buying horse at east market, saddle at west market..." It's not the exact meaning of what it's written or that Mulan was hiding her tracks. There is a rhetorical method in ancient Chinese literature called 互文, which means divide a whole piece of meaning into two sentences or phrases(in this case, four), so when you comprehend the sentences that use 互文, you need to complement the meaning of the first and the second sentences, like when it says "John does A stuff here, Paul does B stuff there", it actually means John and Paul do A and B here and there.
    So it means Mulan bought all equipments in some markets of different locations. There is another one in The Ballad of Mulan: 将军百战死,壮士十年归, which literal translation is : "generals died during a hundred wars, soldiers returned after ten years", but not all generals died and all soldiers survived and went back, so it just basically says after arduous and enduring wars, some of the generals and soldiers died, others returned.

    Just came from the Cinderella video. I knew there must be a Mulan video and was ready to hear some nonsense. But I have to say, this is the most well researched one I have ever encountered on RUclips! You are the only person I watched who ever mentioned Mulan is not a real person based on existing evidence. I truly appreciate your effort in research, not just coming up with some strange, shocking stories to attract viewers.
    And you are right about the lines about the markets. It is a poetic expression, just to show that Mulan went a lot of places to buy her equipments. And the “10000 miles” is also a figure of speech, showing Mulan has traveled a long distance.

    雄兔脚扑朔,雌兔眼迷离。双兔傍地走,安能辨我是雄雌。🐰We learned this poem in junior high, and if you’re wondering why Mulan was purchasing her gear from 4 different markets separately: this is more of a rhetoric method (修辞手法)called 互文( I don’t know the English term for it), she wasn’t trying to cover her tracks or anything, what the author basically was trying to say is just that she went around to different places to get her full set of gear, cause apparently you can’t find a full set of gear for soldiers at one place I don’t know 🤷‍♀️

    The part about the he-hare and she-hare is actually to complement each other, to show that there ISN’T much difference between them, and she asked for a camel, not a horse (thought that’s barely even a mistake that matters). But your video was great! It followed how the ballad goes, too! I loved it!

    Since I’ve studied the poem(in Chinese) in middle school, I‘d say the poem is not properly translated. The true ending poem is like this“ both he-hare’s and she-hare‘s feet go hop and skip, and their eyes are both muddled and fuddled.“ It make sense for a person use modern Chinese to confuse this since this kind of grammar are seldom used nowadays.

    I’m Chinese and we actually studied the poem when we were younger. This is how the original Chinese version goes:
    唧唧復唧唧,木蘭當戶織。
    不聞機杼聲,唯聞女歎息。
    問女何所思,問女何所憶。
    女亦無所思,女亦無所憶。
    昨夜見軍帖,可汗大點兵。
    軍書十二卷,卷卷有爺名。
    阿爺無大兒,木蘭無長兄。
    願為市鞍馬,從此替爺征。
    東市買駿馬,西市買鞍韉。
    南市買轡頭,北市買長鞭。
    旦辭爺娘去,暮宿黃河邊。(btw the river she camped at was the Huang He)
    不聞爺娘喚女聲,但聞黃河流水鳴濺濺。(this part you didn’t mention is how her parents cried for their daughter’s return)
    旦辭黃河去,暮宿黑山頭。
    不聞爺娘喚女聲,但聞燕山胡騎聲啾啾。
    萬里赴戎機,關山度若飛。(it’s not as simple as just one sentence but this part descriptively describes the wars she’s had)
    朔氣傳金柝,寒光照鐵衣。
    將軍百戰死,壯士十年歸。
    歸來見天子,天子坐明堂。
    策勳十二轉,賞賜百千強。
    可汗問所欲,木蘭不用尚書郎。
    願借明駝千里足,送兒還故鄉。
    爺娘聞女來,出郭相扶將。
    阿姊聞妹來,當戶理紅妝。
    小弟聞姊來,磨刀霍霍向豬羊。
    開我東閣門,坐我西閣床。
    脫我戰時袍,著我舊時裳。
    當窗理雲鬢,對鏡帖花黃。
    出門看火伴,火伴皆驚惶。
    同行十二年,不知木蘭是女郎。
    雄兔腳撲朔,雌兔眼迷離。
    雙兔傍地走,安能辨我是雄雌。
    Idk if that’s helpful or not but it’s just a really nice poem and I really like it and I’ve had it proudly memorised since fifth grade :) but honestly it’s just weird hearing you say the translated version lol. Nice video and I’m glad that you’ve shared this Chinese culture.

    Mulan was based on a story of a princess in china...who fought because her father was killed by a hian in the act of war... this was before the Great Wall was actually fully built...

  • @camerontse6615
    @camerontse6615 4 года назад +1

    So I want to correct some bad translation of original Mulan ballad.
    In the original story or poem, she does not have actually brother or sister. This bad interpretation of that comes from when she returns to the village.
    "When Elder Sister hears of Mulan’s return,
    she stands in the doorway wearing a beautiful dress
    When Little Brother hears that his sister has returned,
    He sharpens his knife to slaughter a pig and a lamb.”
    Brother and sister in this context are best friends in the village from where she from. These are not immediate blood relatives.
    Because in China we call all close friends our brother and sister even for close cousins.
    So this can be miss interpreted into immediate blood family when translated to English.

    • @Chibi1ni2ri3na1ynot
      @Chibi1ni2ri3na1ynot 7 лет назад +9

      Aidan sucks at games if I’m correct it is assumed that after returning from war she was to be married but her husband to be died and she followed him into the afterlife. However the alternate version is that she didn’t want to be married and when she tried to run away she was killed this the idea that she “killed her sled” by sealing her fate.

      She fought for her father’s sake, but when she returned her father was dead and mother remarried. Her mother remarried a wealthy man, and he offered Mulan to become one of his concubines. Mulan would rather die than live with him, so she killed herself.
